Reading you guys it seems like you're supposed to play Arena to gain packs and then use the cards to play constructed... which means that everyone end up playing only arena anyway.

You can play constructed only, but the efficiency of your gold goes down if you do. For 50% more gold per pack, you gain x amount of dust and if you do well enough a free pack.
It's like gambling.

I always enjoyed limited formats so there's that too. But yeah it really only makes sense to buy the packs if you have 0 confidence in your arena abilities.

Constructed is in a "till 3 defeats then rewards accordingly" format too?
I thought it was just a mode without costs associated, a simple matchmaker for "search for a single opponent", while Arena was the mode allowing you to play without cards (since you draft) but with an entry cost, and potential rewards. I guess it explain things.
What I meant with the previous post was that people talk about arena as "the way to acquire new cards" but seem to end up only playing arena and thus never using said cards. 
^ well doing better than 3-3 in arena consistently means that there are people who consistently go negative, doesn't it?

Well it could either be they don't have enough good cards yet to feel like playing constructed since it's demoralizing to face legendary cards when you have like a rare or two in your deck.
Some people just enjoy arena, which is why a lot of people discuss "going infinite" which just means making back your entry fee each run so you can continue to arena.

I enjoy arena right now more than I do constructed TBH. The format is filled with super antifun mage that I just don't even want to ladder. I could find an answer to it, but I don't want to delve that deep into something that isn't remotely fun to play or play against.

No constructed there are no "negatives" other than your time invested. Every 3 wins you get 10 gold in constructed. The wins do not need to be consecutive. But if a game lasts 5 mins it means it takes at least 15 mins just to make 10 gold.
A pack is 100 gold and an arena run is 150....so there's that. Arena is a guaranteed pack + some dust and dust can be used to craft cards so you don't need to hope by chance you get a specific card in a pack. Some people prefer playing constructed more than arena anyway, but for mainly arena players it means you can make a better deck for daily quests/better winrate for constructed in case you have poor arena runs that don't pay for themselves.

I personally prefer arena for a couple reasons:
-I'm bad at making constructed decks
-It's easy to jump into an arena and just play through whatever cards I got, I generally don't feel bad if I do poorly on arena runs
-I've generally preferred drafting over constructed anyway

time = money. grinding hours away at arena is not necessarily efficient for some people.

6ah please. pally decks plague the higher levels of ranked. you just get a shit ton of mages 25-15 because pyroblast is cheaper than sylvanas.

I'm aware that my deck BEATS the mage deck for the most part (minor changes, mostly just to make it effecient enough to just "heal" through the pyro), but that doesn't mean that I enjoy playing against it.
And plague isn't the word I would use there. Grace is.

Started playing PoE again (I stopped like 2 months before official release). Forgot how annoying grinding levels is in this game. But also oddly satisfying.
