Going to the gym will burn more calories, but if you are still calories in > calories out your body will use the nutrients and calories to build muscle. If you just sit and eat there will be some muscle, but most of it will just be fat. There is a technique some bodybuilders use called dirty bulking where they basically eat like crazy to gain weight. It works, but you gain a lot of fat and have to do stuff to cut down on that. Yes there's people like professional weight lifters and sumo wrestlers who look fat and have muscle underneath them, but there's no denying a significant portion of the American public is obese and unfit. | ||

This is hardly some catch all, there really are people out there that are like 400lbs and 50% bodyfat. That's not 200lbs of muscle underneath, it's 200lbs of 'lean mass' which includes water, something that fat cells store in abundance. In fact, the majority of fat people are like this, the 'huge as fuck' guy who is fat but muscled up is a rarity, the vast vast majority of overweight/fat people are carrying far less muscle than they think they are. | ||

Pretend you got a 6'3" 400 lb fat dude, ~50% body weight in fat. Guess how much lean mass he's got? 200lbs of it. Guess who else has that much lean mass? Terry Crews. Once you gain the weight, it's all about chipping it away, and replacing it. I'm assuming that Alaric during his bulk, will still be doing a fairly active lifestyle, during his weight gain, therefore he'll have some infrastructure to work with at the end of his bulk. Then he can start his cut, and hardcore lifting. | ||

Lean mass encompasses more than muscle tissue. Rather than listing everything it is, it's easier to just say it is everything that is NOT fat in your body. Fat people carry far more water due to the nature of fall cells, which means they will indeed have a lot of lean mass in that calculation, but the problem is that when they diet down, they will lose a lot of the lean mass along with their fat mass. This isn't even getting into the awful things you do to your body getting to extreme levels of bodyfat. You're thinking about like, World Strongest Man competitors, superheavy class powerlifters/olympic lifters, off-season olympia level bodybuilders, and offensive lineman/defensive tackles. These are dudes that are just BIG AS FUCK, but would have significant muscle mass if they dieted down(and it's very obvious when you look at them). This is not your average fat person. Being fat doesn't magically create muscle, you have to exert specific stresses on your body while simultaneously feeding it proper nutrition and maintaining a certain hormonal environment to gain muscle mass, it doesn't appear as an afterthought of gaining 70lbs because you ate food while you sat on your ass. Walking around with the added fat will add insignificant levels of muscle, which could very possibly be lost if you dieted down incorrectly, something you are more likely to do when you force yourself to diet down from obesity because you put on terribly sloppy weight. There's a difference between telling someone they need to 'bulk' in a bodybuilding sense, and telling them 'just put on 70lbs eating whatever, worry about getting to the gym later.' That is such a terrible thing to tell anyone. | ||

I've added 40 lbs to my deadlift over the last 2 months and lost 3 lbs while counting calories to hit 3k per day (usually only make it to like 2.4k, trying to get calories in without eating just a block of refined sugar is too hard) So much for my goal of gaining 15 lbs in 6 months rofl | ||

Any sort of legume/cashew/nut, healthy oils(coconut, sunflower, EVOO), natty peanut butter, etc. Also, even if you're trying to stay low carb(unless you're actually going ketogenic, then obviously adhere to the rules of your diet strictly), you can fit some sugar in around your workout pretty safely, your body will put it to use in that window just fine. Learning to eat more takes time and effort though, you're basically being a fledgeling competitive eater, trying to train your stomach/digestive tract to handle more food, it's not easy for everyone(I struggled so hard my freshmen year to put on weight because my coach wanted me to be a Safety and I was a tiny little cover corner, there were plenty of times when I was physically uncomfortable eating, and the lineman next to me was all like 'lol ur cute.') | ||
