In Warcraft 3, Arthas was a fairly well-developed character arc, as well as Kael'thas'.
Kael's arc, from what I read, in BC however was just...absolutely disgusting. Feels more plausible that he was captured and replaced by a Kil'jaden demon, than that travesty.

They have this bad habit of "oh, this is a bad guy now, he has to be a bad guy instead of a complex character". Anyone who Blizz labels as a Villain immediately grabs the idiot ball and runs with it.

Also fuck Garrosh.
Yep. He went from "does morally ambiguous things to survive/keep his people alive" to "vaudeville mustache twirling (if Elves could grow those, anyways) villain out to destroy Azeroth with Demons, screw his people".
Arthas retained a great deal of complexity even in TFT, but in WoW? ...well, better than their other villains, at least. Like Illidan going straight-up insane and what not.
Also Garrosh is now apparently a <insert certain fascist dictator here>.
Please, all you young kids don't know the glory of Gharbad the Weak or Blackhand, Blizz better throw some nostalgia bombs in with Diablo 1 and Warcraft 1/2 heroes/villains.

I would never call Kael deep. He can be summarized as follows: my people need magic. You can give me magic? BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.
Between him and Maiev Blizzard characters really freaking blew in TFT.

Part of it yes. The other part is: well fk, I can join with these snakemen or get executed by a racist human lord. I wonder what I choose here.
The other part is basically after his options are exhausted (aka already stuck in Outland).
