Tidus is a strong character lol (I DID like FFX for the record, but good lord character development in the game....ugh). Chrono Trigger sucked....lol. Like...even without the rose-coloured glasses that game was really fucking good. Soundtrack was fucking amazing.

Time hopping is a decent concept, but you just kind of showed up, killed a monster, and maybe got a new teammate. Rinse and repeat.

There was also about 0 character development for anyone in the story other than maybe Frog, the extent of it was "hey we're time travelers, do you want to be a time traveler too? We're the only ones who can save the world in the future/past/whitespace for some half-explained reason!" Time hopping is a decent concept, but you just kind of showed up, killed a monster, and maybe got a new teammate. Rinse and repeat. Are you kidding me? Half of the interesting character development in the story revolved around the city of Zeal and Magus. The optional sidequests at the end of the game added interesting character development for basically EVERY character. Schala was kind of odd in that we didn't get enough exposure to her really so I never found out why we were supposed to care about her so much.

I was in Zeal for like all of 15 minutes before a vizier or something tried to kill me. I don't really remember, maybe I quit before all the character development took place? I got as far as Chrono dying/coming back and the fight with Magus (maybe not in that order) and the entire game was just "find new time zone, get backstory on new teammate, new teammate get, find portal". Not particularly interesting character backstories either.

I don't even know how to argue this one with you because I find your tastes just so fucking weird---I don't understand how you don't think the plot/character development is interesting. I'm sure I could find a game you like very cliched as well, considering most are, but that wouldn't necessarily make it a bad game (also considering we don't seem to have played many of the same games, I don't even know that I could come up with an example.)

What character development was there? I agree that Frog had a decent amount, sure, and his story with Magus was cool, but it was so sparse and spread out that it couldn't really carry the game. Chrono obviously gets 0, being a silent protagonist, Lucca gets almost as little, Marle gets a rather generic "runaway princess" arc and then becomes a flirty love interest. Robo is literally a robot you picked up, with a single scene in which he fights his former comrades. Ayla's arc was kinda fun, but mostly just because she's the most fun PC in the game. I don't even remember any NPCs, they came and went so fast.

I don't even remember any NPCs, they came and went so fast. I've already said, Magus's entire character development was probably the best in the game. You get to see him as a fucking child while he's manipulating his whole family from behind the scenes as an adult at the same fucking time. He tries to summon the fucking being that's out to destroy all space and time SO HE CAN 1V1 IT BECAUSE IT TOOK HIS SISTER. Robo's character development is actually somewhat decent in 'Part 2' and learning the back story of how he fits in post-'end-of the-world' is great. Yeah Crono Lucca and Marle's stories are meh, but that fucking scene where you go back in time to help Lucca's Mom? Holy shit. She gets points on that alone. I really think you're just blinded here by your dislike of the game. Which is fine, but to say that the game is objectively bad is just not true imo. Read this for a good perspective imo. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=285324

It's not even my favourite RPG. I just think it's a very good game. My top RPG probably goes to Shining Force 2.

I never played it on the SNES, so when I got the DS version and heard all the hype I was expecting a great game, or at least a good one that would have been great for it's time, but it's really just kinda generic. Standard characters are fine (I noted this in my mini-dissertation on KS and ASoIaF), but they never really grow out of standard. A couple cool scenes does not a great character make. I could tell the arc of everyone except Ayla from the moment we met, and there were literally 0 curve balls aside from Magus's past. And I'm spoiled on awesome bad guys, so even that doesn't really stand out to me. I'd never recommend against playing it, but I just really, really don't get the hype of people saying it's the "end all be all best RPG ever". From what you've said I'm apparently 99% through the game, and none of the characters or plot twists wowed me overly much. Maybe they do in the after game stuff, but I shouldn't need to finish the game to get the bulk of the plot. Chrono coming back from the dead and seeing his friends all emotional would have been more moving for me if they were more than cardboard cutouts. I dunno, this just really feels like a nostalgia goggles game to me.
