Wave.
That chess battle.

Guys please
So many spoilers for Chrono Trigger. I am disappoint

SF2 confirmed for greatness. Needing to save my movespeed items until after promoting the priestessmonks to ensure demigod status was always a bit of a bummer though.
Also, I am totally about to go unbury the DreamCast to play Skies of Arcadia again. Even the title screen was tremendous and that doesn't even mention pirate air-ship battles.

There's a statute of limitations on spoilers boss.

By the way? Vader? Luke and Leia's dad all along. I know, right? Who saw that coming in the last 35 years?
Also, you didn't hear this from me, but you can find a Mew under the truck by SS Anne.

Dude. Wave. That chess battle. Oh man. That shit was hard as fuck. Standouts for me that game: Intetactions with bosses LONG before you fight them---really well done. (Ie cameela, Geshp, Odd-eye---dat plot twist btw. )
Epic fucking music.
Epic boss battles: the Kraken, that giant statue guy who is so big you only see his FEET on the battle screen.
Promotion system was awesome--ninja Slade, Kiwi becomes a fucking firebreathing monster!
The story. Yeah I get the premise that none of this would have happened if Slade didn't fuck up in the first place but he did, and now you have to get back to where everything started just to fix it while Zeon throws fucking everything he possibly can at you to stop that from happening, including shooting down your fucking airship with giant flower-lasers.
The scale of it really gets me, and the chess-style battles (AND the actual chess battle) are fun as hell. Character development: non fucking existent but I don't even care.

Romeo and juliet is a story of a 17 year old falling in love with a 13 year old for nothing but her looks that causes multiple deaths and they both end up dying.

Kiwi so worthless. Always dies to Freeze 3, Godzilla needs a coat.
|
Lol my previous boss just called to get my info and told me to just tell him if I wanted to come back and he'd make it happen.
I guess he doesn't know how many hours there I spend on kpop sites, youtube, and reading fanfic.

Seriously though if I had to recommend a game I think everyone should play, play SF2. There's even a debug mode with a code where you can fucking play 2 players and have one side be the monsters in every battle!!
The themes and battle music are so spot on---they capture the feel of everything they set out to. Overworld theme? Epic as fuck with fanfares and shit. Makes exploring the world and the random fights excellent.
Battle themes? Monster attack gives you that feeling of desperation while the boss attack theme ramps it up. Party attack theme is pretty basic but the promoted attack theme you feel like the greatest hero the world has ever known.
Final boss battle theme is chaotic and is absolute genius musically. Ill link some of this shit later.

I think FFTA was the last FF before the merging. Japanese FFTA said Square, European FFTA said Square-Enix. Also one day I'll play the Chrono games.
About Cloud, he did have some feats, but on the whole he still failed the qualifications to enter SOLDIER and became a lowest rank trooper because he didn't have any other path left within Shinra's army. His mind took a sharp beating from him being vulnerable to the Jenova cells Hojo injected him, but his insecurities that made him unable to go back home after failing to enter SOLDIER, then lead to him stealing Zac's feats and (partially) identity so he could claim to be who he wished to and get recognition, these things were here before his mind got messed up. And after that you get all the early parts of the game where he acts like the tough guy and the veteran (see how he interacts with Barrett at the beginning and gets appointed to leader, and the way he talks nonchalantly about being a 1st class SOLDIER during the Kalm retelling) because he's yearning for validation and wants to look like Zac.
Sure, he had guts when it came to it (uh, quite literally I guess), but on the whole he was an insecure guy with issues and he handled them particularly badly. It's a bit dumb from me—because for ease of storytelling the protagonist also generally happens to be the group's leader, and a weak-minded leader isn't too believable as common sense'd want for a headstrong person to naturally take the role instead—but I liked having the protagonist be that guy you're exposed to (or witness), rather than "the hero" you'd look up to.
TL;DR: how the fuck did you hang on until this line, Roffles? Go take a break.

Also the dancing FMV when you meet Riona is hilariously awkward, to date one of my favorite FF moments. Squall is dumb. In fact basically all of 8 is dumb. One of their worst, imo. 8 is amazing the feels squalls a beast everyones like amagerd tell me your feelings squall and he's like shut up idiots im trying to save the world The best part is he's a mercenary so he's like "I don't even give a fuck if Ultimecia kills all of you I just want a paycheck". Try Gafgarion.

Except for Golden Sun for some reason. Golden Sun's Mechanics were new and interesting, but the story wasn't really. Very good games (if you discount DD, cause fuck that one), but yeah I'm not sure why your exception is GS. I quite liked the part where you get told halfway through + Show Spoiler +"You know, these guys you chased (and killed several of) earlier? They were trying to save the world. 0K, they were mainly thinking about their village and we'd probably have lost a bunch of lands had they lived closer to, say, the Venus lighthouse. They still went against the whole continent's history (and thus population) to save the world. Nice job breaking it, hero, now guess who takes their place?"
Also liked the way you encounter the group from the first tome. + Show Spoiler +Half your group were hostages and Felix followed without fighting, so Karstine and Agatio are likely weaker than the first tome's group. Instead of making them magically beat the 4, then you beat them, the duo trap them so the group can't fight on equal terms, and then yours only comes one by one, ramping up your strength. I found that part well made.
Loved FFT's OST (particularly stuff like Decisive Battle) because it's, uh, "martial". A bunch of the "serious" battle themes are that, serious, austere, you don't have huge flights of lyricism or big "THIS IS A BOSS FIGHT" tunes. I thought it plays well within the way the game's story unravels (no standard or boss battle, just fights that are part of a whole and you aren't even playing main fiddle).

On October 24 2013 06:33 Requizen wrote: It's not a bad game, it's just dull. It's a quintessential JRPG, so that means random encounters, turn based system, lots of walking around world map doing nothing until you find the next plot point. Magus I've admitted is cool (and Frog by extension, though I'm a sucker for "paladin" type characters), but cool enough to carry the whole game? Not really.
I never played it on the SNES, so when I got the DS version and heard all the hype I was expecting a great game, or at least a good one that would have been great for it's time, but it's really just kinda generic. Standard characters are fine (I noted this in my mini-dissertation on KS and ASoIaF), but they never really grow out of standard. A couple cool scenes does not a great character make. I could tell the arc of everyone except Ayla from the moment we met, and there were literally 0 curve balls aside from Magus's past. And I'm spoiled on awesome bad guys, so even that doesn't really stand out to me.
I'd never recommend against playing it, but I just really, really don't get the hype of people saying it's the "end all be all best RPG ever". From what you've said I'm apparently 99% through the game, and none of the characters or plot twists wowed me overly much. Maybe they do in the after game stuff, but I shouldn't need to finish the game to get the bulk of the plot.
Chrono coming back from the dead and seeing his friends all emotional would have been more moving for me if they were more than cardboard cutouts. I dunno, this just really feels like a nostalgia goggles game to me.
This is definitely a shitpost. Reqplz.

Like...even without the rose-coloured glasses that game was really fucking good. Soundtrack was fucking amazing. That scene where Rikku takes off the wetsuit though. <3

While we're on the topic of Enix, what are your guys' favorite video game tracks? I don't really have such a wide berth of knowledge in that regard, since I've never played very many games, but I could name a good 50 or so off the top of my head that I can remember fully.
Bonus points for hipster knowledge. Also we all agree that Bastion has a good soundtrack.
