FF VII had an excellent story for me while I believed most people were too busy fanboying over Sephiroth (I'd laugh at their tastes but I liked Vincent... eh, at least I got over it!) to realise Jenova was the one pulling the strings and using his legacy and impact to do her thing. A few months ago I checked the FF wiki's sources and the version of the story told in the spin-offs and it turned out I was the one who misinterpreted all along and Sephiroth is supposed to be that DBZ-esque cult-worthy archvillain.

Then of course you had legit points of the game, like how even though Cloud is supposed to overcome his issues and become that big guy the world needs by the end, there are these flashback scenes that depict him as an insecure and "weak" (didn't make SOLDIER, genetically vulnerable to Jenova cells, etc.) teenager/young adult, who ends up stealing the status and achievements of his dead friend to hide his failures and impress his entourage. He's not perfect or anything, he doesn't have "story" issues like moral dilemmas or a prophetised great destiny and such.
I actually liked that we had a pathetic protagonist for once, as we are revealed that up till now he was pulling a tough guy act rather than being dependable and stuff.

Then you get spin-off stuf like trying to give a tragic dimension to the Vincent/Lucrecia relationship, or turning Zack's end from trying to battle a handful of soldiers and getting shot as if with Tommy guns, then Cloud loses another screw and steals his identity, to bravely standing up against a whole platoon of several dozen soldiers all at once, survive the mercy shot long enough to hand his sword to Cloud by himself, telling him to inherit his legacy, then die with a vision of his gf in the sky and j-pop in the background.

What.

And yeah even though it's pretty linear both (or possibly all 3 depending how you play) sequences in Midgard are by far the best parts of the game setting-wise.
