Barring any random happenstance I'll be playing some 40k tomorrow and hopefully will be taking some pictures and do a quick Battle Report writeup. Thought you might enjoy :D

So how does one exactly play 40k? from my understanding it's a board game with expensive plastic models. tabletop turn based strategy war game thing - played briefly this past weekend with very low army point counts (maybe 500 points?) It's complex, and we were playing just on a vanilla table, so there wasn't any cover or anything. I'm not the one to explain how to play. But yeah, it's expensive

Seems like it involves a tedious amount of dicerolls? Like running deathstacks into each other in RISK.

http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Ork-Boyz-4-models These are like, the very base pieces of the Ork army, and a unit of Boyz can be 10-30 pieces so yeah, things go up from there

But obviously the bigger pieces like the vehicle pieces are going to be far more expensive.

Every model is obviously different, from your basic troop to your tanks to your special characters. They all have statlines to denote things like Toughness, number of wounds, shooting ability, melee ability, etc, and every model has its own cost. Basic troops with no upgrades cost little and can be taken en masse (except in some armies where everything is expensive), while tanks kitted out with special weapons and giant monsters have high point costs. Additionally, every model/squad falls under a unit type: HQ, Troop, Elite, Fast Attack, Heavy Support. (there's also things like Superheavies and Fortifications, but they're rarely used). Players agree on the points limit of the game and build an army list up to that limit. It's required to take 1 HQ selection and 2 Troops selections, but then you can take up to 4 more squads of Troops, 1 more HQ, and 3 models/squads of the other choices. Games are generally played at 500/750/1000 points (small games), 1500/1750/1850 (normal games), or 2000+ (Apocalypse games). Games are played by taking turns, each player does their movement, shooting, and then melee, done by rolling dice. Most games are won by capturing objectives with your Troops, but secondary objectives are gained by killing units, killing HQs, or moving to certain sections of the board. It gets a lot more complicated, but that's the basic rundown. Meeting now.

I plan on buying probably another ~$200 worth of units
