Made even more impressive considering that except for last year, which was a TvT final, 6/7 of those Katowice finals all ended up as either ZvP or ZvZ finals. It's his 5th ro4 at Katowice, he didn't make it in 2019. Still super impressive. I'll say it again but he's the most consistent player in world championship events Is he ? Until this year's bombing, one could've argued Reynor with his 4 finals and 2 won (out of the Blizzcon/Katowice switch) was up there. If Gamers8 counts then WeSG does as well. Maru made top 3 in WeSG all 3 years, and he's made ro4 at blizzcon. That's 9 ro4+ in World championships, to Reynor's 4. Yeah, but Reynor won Kato, Maru hasn't just yet. He has a bimodal tendency to either straight up win or clown out, whereas Maru is necessarily more consistent overall out of just being the better player. Just wanted to point out these things really depend on the k you pick for top-k, i.e. k=4. Well yeah, it wasn't about who's done better. I said Maru is the most consistent player in these events, which he certainly is going off the fact he has over double the number of ro4 appearances as someone like Reynor.

Can someone please explain to me how qualification for this World Cup thingymagig works?
It’s driving me insane, maybe im just missing a link somewhere
Dark is far out in front already with Korean EPT points, he and Maru are qualified through this tournament. If Cure makes it past Heromarine, and qualifies, I think no matter the rest of the results Maru and Cure will be top 3 Kr
Dark is looking relatively unassailable in EPT points if he makes the Championship if he makes top 2 or better I think he actually is unassailable. Maru and Cure or Maru have to win it to even come close. Regardless
Look please it is JUST me that is confused? I know I’m complaining a lot on this particular topic, like a lot
Do those spots go down the ladder in the region the player plays in, or go down to the next best non-qualifying player in that tournament (if possible), or extra spots in open qualification?
I just find it strange, based on the points on offer, those 3 players are in pole position to qualify based on EPT tallies anyway, without the auto slots.
Why not just cut out that middle step and just use that ranking primarily?

I don't think we know if it's EPT point or next-best Katowice performer, but I would bet on EPT points.
I'm guessing the top-4 at Kato ticket is more for cross-promotion. Altough, if HM doesn't win here, he may have a hard time getting in through points.

Yeah, that statement is right, but not anymore if you pick k=2 (as soon as you iincrease k you just start measuring winrate differentials), so we're both right and I think the choice of k loads the debate either in the consistency vs clutchness direction (consistency in clutch events being a somewhat new one).
Anyway, I'm glad Maru's through and hope for the sake of the game we see him in the finals.

The announcement said:
"In case any player earns more than one slot, the competitor with the highest EPT Global Standings rank will be invited."

He actually has a pretty good Chance, EU Stabdings have serral reynor maxpax and clem ahead, and clem and serral are already qualified (and Well maxpax doesnt do offline)

Rooting for Cure even though it's a more difficult match-up for Maru, otherwise people are gonna complain Maru had an easy road to the finals o:

Even as a Maru fan, I think once Gumiho got knocked out of this side of the bracket that this was a good bracket for him. It could have been easier if Solar and Ragnarok had been deposited on this side but this isn't bad either.
The only players I was REALLY worried about for Maru was Cure, Gumiho and Serral (which was never going to be on his side of the bracket anyway). ESL was never going to put them on the same side of the bracket if they could avoid it.

Hopefully nobody deserving misses out through some wonkiness. I still hate the retrospective qualifications given out, and 2/3 Dreamhack Masters giving out one slot each that have been completed, and the next one for top 4
Anyway GGs this series so far, looking pretty neck and neck

Absolutely sick break by Cure.

that raven usage by Cure was amazing, really well deserved 2-0

What a big brain move from Cure, impressive read on that game

Hopefully Maru makes the final though, he's the only shot at not getting a 4-0 zerg champion

Cure looks dangerous as hell in TvT. He could definitely make the finals.

I am actually more afraid of HM than Cure as a Maru fanboy, he has all the crazy build that hes willing to try against better opponent that can caught Maru off-guard. Cure has been playing more standard and hes not very aggressive neither, which favor Maru style into lategame. And the last time Cure beat Maru in a Bo5+ was almost 4 years ago, in DH Summer 2020, other than that Cure victory has been Bo3.
