If they did, they would have just defended and tried to go late game everytime, since HM's TvP late game is pretty much tier-b level. Agreed. Based on HM eating 3 storms and a big disruptor shot in the last game, and how badly he played that first game, I would say that there is something to just playing defensive. But defensive protoss openings have so little room for error that it is probably worth the risk doing something to get an edge in the early game. If you just do a run of the mill stargate opening, the terran has the initiative for extremely long

We're most likely going to have a ro8 with 5 Zerg and 3 Terran, and while that's not a perfectly balanced distribution of Starcraft's two races we can't realistically expect a perfectly balanced bracket every time. I think protoss has faded out of existence in big tournaments (except GSL ST) a bit too much for anyone's liking. We don't get much variety in these parts, and it's exacerbated by games like the ones we just watched - where every game was just "can heromarine hit a timing".

Because Protoss has been shut out of winning the best of the best tournaments for years at this point, results only ever seem to trend downwards, its best players are lining up to go serve in the Korean military, and still somehow the prevailing narrative in the community amounts to "Protoss is OP because there are more of them in the ro36! Disruptors do a lot of damage! Nerf Toss!" Besides which, a big part of the draw of StarCraft is the fact that it has three races and 6 distinct matchups; having all of the Protoss out this early means that the rest of the tournament gets a lot less diverse, and therefore a lot less compelling for a lot of people, particularly those who are watching because they want to see high-level SC play rather than cheering for a specific player to win (or race to lose...).

I'm here thinking the same thing. Sure it sucks that we have 0 Protoss players in the Ro8 but it's not like there's gonna be 8 Zergs in the Ro8 and ZvT is a very entertaining MU imo.

I hate to break this to you, but his post was not serious, you may note he mentions Starcraft's two races, contrary to how things have been going lately, Starcraft technically has three races. ![]() Its telling that the post feels so close to reality though lol

I definitely missed that part. Anyway, I still think acting like the tournament is over is going a bit overboard. The only way to change this in the future is probably for new stronger players to start picking Protoss, which is definitely not a given. Protoss probably needs a buff too but it's a hard problem to solve since it would make ladder more skewed towards Protoss.

If that can make you feel better, the 0-3 scorline of Dark vs Trap might make it look like a fairly one sided match, but if you got to watch it live you'll have seen that it was actually a depressing beatdown ![]()

Yeh I feel like SC2 isn't at the scale where we get the normalizing effect of large numbers—Protoss might be underpowered in the current map pool/balance patch, OR they're just in a terrible down-cycle in terms of having top-tier talent compared to the other factions. It's getting very sad and will only get worse when Zest and Trap leave :/ I don't know if herO and Classic will ever get back to a high level. This tournament might have been the last time we have any true top level toss players and it went like this. It's definitely concerning since no military returner has REALLY gotten back to 100% of their prev skill. Once Zest and Trap go to the military, it's 100% possible that Protoss is reaching the end of its pro-level life cycle in SC2 (in Korea anyway, where there hasn't been any significant new talent for a very long time).

It's both. At the top level Protoss is bad most of the time, maps are not exactly Protoss friendly(and we even can't tell what it good for P anyway) and the talent is leaving in droves. If you're Protoss fan, you're screwed. Edit> it doesn't help that everybody pretends the Protoss results are fine - e.g. casters.
