It was Major when I checked, yesterday; I don't think this can be seen as a Premier tournament, either(especially when the ast HSC and Guangzhou Carnival were labeled Major). I suppose there was an error?

Tournaments Tier Definition on TL: Premier Tournaments offer an outstanding prize pool, are frequently played out offline, and feature the best players from all over the world. They are commonly held by well-established franchises and are considered especially prestigious amongst the community. Major Tournaments feature a large prize pool and a good number of top-tier players. They are generally one-time events which take place online.

I think one hidden definition is that there must be some kind of qualifier involved as this tournament had but HSC doesn't now. It's interesting to take a look at the reassignment of HSC from Premier to Major tier between HSC 16 and HSC 18: They both satisfy the official TL definition for Premier tournament (in fact they're basically the exact same tournament happening 1 year apart) but the only difference is that HSC 16 had slots for qualifiers while 18 doesn't.

Then what about the Hangzhou Starcraft carnival? It also had qualifiers, had a higher prize pool than GPC, was played offline and had prestigious invites (neeb, innovation, rogue, hero, scarlett). Surely they belong to the same category, be it premier or major?

It's got a solid prize pool, it's played offline, GPL is a relatively well-known series of tournaments. But it definitely doesn't feature best players from all over the world or is considered particularly prestigious among the community. And 14 out of 16 attendees were invited too. Quite honestly this tournament's main appeal is that its prize pool is above 20k.

The majority of players actually got there by accumulating points in official tournaments like WCS qualifier/challenger or GPC monthlies. The only problem is the overall quality of players.

I agree with Digmouse, I am not sure there were enough top players to consider GPC a Premier event.
