I think you misread. I don't think this makes players not want to buy it, but everyone who plays the game already knows that skins exist so I don't really see the point of forcing them into tournaments when every potential consumer is already aware that skins exist and buys them if they like them. I really don't think it makes a difference for how much skins get sold.

Well, that's one of many options. But just look around and see how many "pointless" ads campaigns exist - but corporations aren't stupid, so those still likely make money. The amount of people who see it here and want it as well cannot be underestimated.

Ads work. Companies wouldn't spend millions in them if they weren't effective. Their return on interest (ROI) is measured and tracked very closely since we're talking about huge investments here.
As mush as we (consumers) hate them, that doesn't change the simple fact that ads do work. If they didn't, the problem would be simpler.
