Well he can still win SSL, he didn't win it when he won GSL so winning only one of the two is still a good achievement. Hopefully Dark or TY manage to go to the finals tho, PvP all the way would be so boring.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse but has this happened to other great players before? By "this" I mean having such under performance repeated times in a day when you are so much better and the odds couldn't be more in your favor...
The only example that comes to my mind is Inno vs Duckdeok but Idk if Inno was so favorite in TvP back then...

Game 1 Ryung vs Zest was funny. Maps in the day maps were so small that cheese would have been standard and built in Ryung's main.

I always felt that one-day group play somewhat sold the quality of the Starleagues short, in that it allows for more element of luck to come into play.
1. Timing - Having a super bad day? Down with a slight flu? Major tournament tomorrow (e.g. Dark's GSL RO16 was a day before his SSL semis last season)? Too bad, just your luck. 2. Matchups - Having to prepare against 2-3 races whilst other players are preparing less? Too bad, just your luck.
I would prefer if they adopted the BW style - a player only ever has to prepare and play one match per day. Perhaps also do away with double elims format, but even keeping it is doable (Week 3 would only have one match from the group - Losers Finals).
(Not saying that Zest lost today for any of those reasons. But I feel that under a spread-out group format, the better player would stand a higher chance of advancing, due to the element of luck being reduced.)

Zest getting eliminated by the very players he himself picked during group selections... I guess that's what you call ironic.

Stick to BO3. Just spread out the matches over 3 weeks, that's all.

When a seed gets eliminated, it's highly likely that the player he picked defeated him along the way. The only possible way of that not happening is the seed winning against his pick, then losing the winner's final, then losing to the third player who beat his pick.
And SC2 being a rather even game between top and good players, I don't find it surprising nor ironic when a seed gets eliminated by his pick.
(If the pick 4-0ed the seed en route to advancing - then that's ironic and funny)

BW round robin system also has problems, but i prefer it as well

Ryung made it to the bracket stage of GSL. That hasn't happened since BL-infestor.
|
Meanwhile, herO has managed to reach the RO8 with rather uninspiring and unconvincing plays, in both this group and the previous one.
Whoever wins GSL this season, I really hope it's on the back of some more solid performances.
