I'm probably missing some important piece of info here, but aren't the regional challenger events supposed to run before the server qualifiers? Everyone plays in the regional challenger because it has prize money and circuit points -- it's not just about qualifying for the championship. It should also take priority on determining qualifiers because it's the most region-locked.

Only after qualifiers are determined every other way, the server qualifiers are run to determine the next best players. Doing the challenger first should get a more competitive pool of players into the championship and it should also minimize the amount of extra games that must be played (should avoid some extra series being played at the challenger to determine qualifiers and should also save 8 players the trouble of playing the server qualifiers at all).

What exactly is the priority on qualifying anyway? If someone who is in the championship via invite from WCS Points wins their regional challenger, does the next highest WCS Point player get invited or does 2nd place at the regional challenger get the spot?

However it works, my gut is telling me the server qualifiers should be played last, but I'd like to hear from whoever designed the system to explain the rules of it and how they determined that the system they figured out is the best it can be.

Not really a complete answer to the above and it would be nice to have full information, but apparently we will usually see the server qualifiers after the challenger system :

That's really intriguing! What is different about this season that makes it better for the challenger to not be played first? I can't imagine it.

Not really sure, perhaps just lack of time to organize it? Nothing else really makes sense because it only complicates things in the long run.

It's the replacement for WCS Premier season 1 basically.

Koreans aren't banned. If they want to play in the $150k tourney, they need to invest in living in the region, I think that's more than fair enough. I can't stand when people say it's welfare money for Europeans now, it pretty much was welfare money for Koreans too.

Actually that's an interesting point because in a way, it was sort of like that. Koreans came to the NA and the EU regions at least partly because they were easier than the Korean regions. So while it may not have been welfare money, it was definitely easier than in Korea.

And actually, it's even less like welfare for the foreigners, because they now have to fight people of their own skill level to get the money, as opposed to people out of their skill level. It would be like if Koreans had to face archon mode Koreans and then call that fair.

I don't think people are upset that Koreans are banned in the WCS, because that's similar to how it was last year, but it's that Koreans are banned from the IEMs and the Dreamhacks, and those are the places where we expected to see top Koreans outside of Korea.

Yea but they're not actually banned. It's all about the ROI, is it worth moving outside of Korea to compete or stay at home and compete with the best of the best? They can compete just like Hydra and violet did. So we need to stop saying banned because they aren't really banned, they're just region locked out.

Also on that note, I feel like DH will end up in Korea anyways. I've never seen DH in my 13+ years of esports, leave Europe. This is the first time I'm seeing DH come to the US.

I could dig that.

I believe the new WCS format is exciting, matching players against players of their own level of skill, and get the best of each region and match them against each other on a big stage and a neutral zone (where fans can cheer for all the players).

It's like if Barcelona FC was allowed to enter any soccer league they wanted. In the words of famous smasher D1: DEEEEESSSTRRRRUUUUCTIOOOOOONNN

With the new format we get like the Champions Cup. Sure Barcelona FC will win it as well, but it makes it a lot more doable for other teams/players to be a champion contender. We don't always get Real Madrid vs Barcelona grand finals, same will happen on WCS finals (hopefully).

I like the example more of star European players joining MLS or well what's relevant today is star European players in their primes joining the Chinese League. Higher pay-outs, salaries, weaker competition, more chance at lower prestige (less competition) trophies.

It suck for SEA player to have to play in NA, there is so many good player from there, they deserve at lest one or two spot for them.
Edit : wow Chinese player too...

Also, do someone know if by any chance, the Mike Ross in the esl bracket, is the fighting game Mike Ross?
