I remember reading 300 pages on english manual when i was 11 to play EF2000. Those were the kind of complex games. Now with all about making the accessible, fast to get into, many games have lost their magic to me. Luckily there are still games that good, but they are not into the spotlight anymore. I wasn't around at all for that era of gameplay, but I've noticed that when I try to boot up an older game (borrowed from a friend, typically), it takes time to actually get into and learn. These days, there's an in-built tutorial that holds your hand and streamlines the game's early experience.

Like how SC2 simplified BW. Don't get me wrong, I think unlimited unit and building selection was good, better pathing is good, smart casting and all that stuff that makes the game more accessible to more casual players is awesome. However, they got rid of a lot of awesome spells from BW and replaced them with less-complicated ones, for example. For example, I always thought Ensnare was a cool spell. It doesn't do damage, but it can give you a huge advantage in a battle by reducing enemy DPS and preventing retreat. But they simply took it and Plague and rolled them into Fungle Growth, which is in some ways less powerful but easily-spammable. Also, they got rid of the cool abilities on the medic, Optic Flare and Restoration, again situational spells that can really do work when used in the right situation (and especially with smart casting in the game). Also, I think Dark Swarm was just a more interesting spell than Blinding Cloud.

Dude, you've never been exposed to a Belägrings Pansarvagn. Count yourself lucky.

Edit: btw what did the paper manual say? Did it give strategy advice? It's kinda funny to read old strategy guides for Starcraft 1 that were written before the Sc1 metagame developed.

Yep, and it smelled like glory and victory. Seriously. You also had the lore written down so you would have something to read and wonder about before playing.
