Expensive, not very likely to succeed, does not dovetail well with any standard build.

But they're great in the mid to late game aren't they? How expensive is it to research and build a couple Overlords and Banelings specially for a Baneling drop on the mineral line?

It's not likely to work against someone with good multitasking and map awareness. You're just giving away precious gas most likely.

Also, trading banes for workers is often bad for zerg. For 8 banes and 2 OLs, even if you kill 15ish workers, you'd be breaking even at best. You need massive detonations to make it worthwhile.


Using a few banes for SCVs is ok but most zergs either dont use them at all or blow like 15-20 of them on a planetary.

Honestly? It's unlikely that you'll get enough SCVs to make worthwhile, especially in the late game with multiple orbitals around. I don't like using banes to kill SCVs in general, it usually backfires.


To be fair, it is relatively common for pro's to split off a few banes to run into the mineral line during their attacks on outlying bases in mid/late-game ZvT.

Not in the late game, before.. When there is a lot of things going on I think it is perfectly viable to roll those banes in the mineral line and get the SCVs. Ofc if terran doesn't have a supply depot+bunker wall, in that case it is not worth it ofc.

But my point is you can afford to trade a couple of them but most zergs I play against go for my 4th base which is always a PF and waste like 20 banes on it which is definitely not worth it at all.
