Problem is that if you are aware, you can spot them on the map and dodge them. Obviously good placed mines either cannot be dodged or you cannot drop, your choice haha :D Im definitily going to try it out, I'm a bit scared of friendly fire on my scv's though....
On edges (turret + mine) the mine will trigger in direction of the medivac and either hit it before it reaches the mineral line or even mid-air. To defend your mainbase, I'd suggest having an army and/or vikings there. Usually you can defend the mine-spot with turret/mine and/or bunker (depending on how save you want to play) and have your army in the other position.
Generally speaking TvT gets "HARD" when both want to be aggressive, because it stretches your multitasking. You can either defend well or attack well, the player better in multitasking will probably do either both better or one of those better which could win him the game.
I personally prefer to be defensive as its "easier" for me and doesn't stretch me too much while I can still match him in macro etc. Ah ye~

The hellbat while in the earlier stages make the game look stupid, makes the mech TvT less stale in midgame.
