The reason Stephano lost was two horrible engagements were Tod caught his army. But more importantly, when doing the SH split map style it relies on you being able to take and defend extra bases and prevent extra bases of your opponent whilst trading cost efficiently the whole time. Stephano was not able to do this due to ToDs early lead.

ToDs extra bases were somewhat nullified by him headbutting his units away allowing Stephano to at one stage being in a superior position DOWN in bases to ToD.

the only reason he won with this strat was because he was so fucking far ahead from early game... not because he was doing aggressive stuff.

+1

I loved watching ToD's strategies... against decent Z player snuffe he opened with what seemed like a terrible build fell behind massively in supply but the n started constant harassing, denying bases, and massed void rays.. against maxed zerg army mass hydra. and won.

Honestly Stephano would have won the game if he hadn't taken that horrible fight at the end because ToD had no money and Stephano's unit composition beats his.

Basically this.

Stephano lost due to losing his infestors without getting a chance to use them.

If he got even a half decent fungal with Swarm Hosts in position, ToD would've just died. He had no money in the bank because he lost so much of his ahead economy by just throwing zealots into a blender, and losing templar again and again.

Because he starved him out, he neveer intended to "bang down the door" of Stephano, just deny the 5th forever. It takes time but it was cool and refreshing and nice to see, imo the cast really ruined it and if they had given more credit to Tod's style it would've been much more exciting.

doesn't make that much sense. why the immortals instead of colossus then?

very nice game plan @todsc2 force zerg to not make any muta or lings, play like zerg as a protoss taking so many bases wp.

wish commentators could of gotten on to this

Please explain why replacing 12 zealots in ToDs army with 4 colossus would be an inferior decision.

I'm not the pro player here so should probably leave it to Tod but I've seen games with heavy muta switch's and staying on Archon, Templar to stop that you say explain why 12 supply of zealots better than 4 Collosi, I ask you how can you afford any Collosi with the price of 12 zealots (1200 minerals 0 gas)?

If you're actually arguing that Tod couldn't have afforded four colossus in that late game scenario then you probably need to rewatch that game. And if heavy mutalisk switch is your concern, keep in mind that stephano had a severely limited economy for most of that game AND tod would have still have a ton of archons/storm lying around. Just because you have colossus doesn't mean you forgo other good lategame protoss units (like archons and templar)

I have no clue about PvZ (and not much clue about the current state of HotS since I don't play / watch it atm), but it's a foreign protoss beating Stephano, so the strategy is good somehow.

I disagree with this. The advantage was gained in the early game taking out Stephano's third (twice?). He then was a base up the whole game, eventually culminating in an inefficient conclusion. He didn't even have a Robo Bay or Stargates in case his army was crushed. Had he been caught out of position, I think he would have been in major trouble.

Because the Sc2 tournament is a very small and not that important part of Dreamhack.

Isn't it the most important tournament going on? During breaks they show how much people are watching dreamhack streams, and SC2 had a very big % of those numbers. At least 40% I think, possibly more.

Starving a player out is a good strategic plan. But you have to build an army behind it that they can't beat when they inevitably all in you. And ToD's army was NOT unbeatable. Stephano's army was better in fact. That's the one thing I don't understand. The fight Stephano took in the end was horrible which is why ToD's win seemed easy in the end. But honestly ToD should have added mass voidrays or tempests that Stephano couldn't take out no matter how many SHs he has. But ToD's army actually wasn't safe. It doesn't beat mass SH/infestor/Viper, especially because ToD has no money

ToD's unit compostion was excellent enough that stephano cant switch his unit compostion.
About collossi: i think he avoided it in order viper are lesser useful.

It's like people who are praising tod's strategy to starve out stephano refuse to believe you can do the exact same thing with either
a) tempests
b) colossus
and have much better results

its not like it was 3 base vs 1. Its not that hard to defend for a long time if you have 3 bases since there is a supply cap.

What? The point is that ToD couldn't break Stephano with the lack of sufficient splash damage, and had to keep inefficiently trading until he finally won. It was frankly brutal to watch.

But isnt that the whole point? To keep him defending until he is out of resources? Tod doesnt have to worry about efficiency as long as he denys bases

OMG I just turned on DH to see ToD has taken a game from Stephano.

Then I looked at the standing and see that ToD needed 1 games to advance while Stephano already has advanced.

Stephano's so nice.
