No there can be a tie if more than 2 people have the same score by head to head as first tie breaker. This has happened many times.

Because you're looking for the best players in a group (that's why you're having a group stage in the first place). If you want to know who's better head to head you have a bracket instead. most tournaments in sc2 use head to head as 1st tiebreaker in group stage, only notable exception is IEM I think. Dreamhack does head to head first as well. Both methods have their merits and downsides.

Head to head is just a mini group or bracket based on the group results. It is a perfectly fair way to separate players. I have no way what point average is but it's not used in SC2.

That is mapscore. Also it appears it is the difference between the number of maps won and the number of maps lost rather than simply number of maps won. Number of maps won alone is meaningless and should never be used.

Anyways both are perfectly fine methods to break a tie. The Idea behind head-to-head first is that when both players have won the same amount of matches it is "unfair" that the guy you beat advances just because of won maps (which are irrelevant for the win of a match, 0-2 or 1-2 , both is a loss).

It's not unfair to advance in a group because of the map scores because it means you were a better player overall. While if you advance because of 1 game won it's unfair because you may be a worse player but you just won a game (without even knowing it would matter).

Jon Andersen @FXOBabyKnight Apparently I'm through to the next round of ESET UK Masters anyway. :D I guess beating ForGG was pretty important. Poor him though. :/ Looks like the players didn't know the format.

Then you use the number of maps won in the group because you're looking for the better score in the group and only if they're still tied you use the head to head score between both players. Or you know, you could do it the other way?

Spain football league for example also uses (for teams with same points) head-to-head points first , then head-to-head goals, and only then the overall goal score: http://worldsoccer.about.com/od/leaguesandclubs/a/Understanding_the_Primera_Division.htm same for champions league: http://www.uefa.com/newsfiles/19071.pdf check point 6.05 (page 10 of the document)
