Personally I like a simple, single elimination bracket. But if it has to be groups, winners format is, imo, more entertaining than round robin.

You have good insight. Playing video game is not nearly as demanding physically. I wouldn't be surprised 60 years old winning GSL if he/she has a chance and dedication to do so. Often times, people start to play games in teenage years. Therefore, it is only natural that some talents come up from those age bracket. When e-sports grow bigger and pro gamer career is taken more seriously by societies, then we might see more older age champions. For now, being younger is an advantage. I personally don't really like ret's playstyle but he has won international tournaments and done really well in many others but suppy doesn't have any accomplishments whatsoever (no doing decently in WCS usa doesn't count as an achievent... not even close to an achievement you could compare to some of ret's) strange point of view
if you don't look at the results but look at the games being played, ret has been playing at a fairly mediocre level (occasionally great macro play, consistently _bad_ unit control) for as long as i can remember now. his series against alicia at NASL was like watching two players trying to lose against each other 
which is a shame, 'cause ret does have his bouts of greatness. they usually get bogged down by his micro. now i don't know about suppy that much, but if he's showing impressive games and solid play lately (as i've heard), i'd easily rate him righer than ret.

I know the GSL/winners format. But i think its stupid to copy it over to these tournaments aswell. Basically Mana gets free chance to beat his opponent again... I don't, the GSL-groups has the most unfair system for a group stage I can think of.
You need 2 wins, but if you have 1 amazing player, 1 horrible player and 2 mediocre players, one of the mediocre players gets a "free win" while the other gets a "sure loss".
If the mediocre players play 1-1 the one with the free win advances.
I don't see how round of robin is worse than that.
