I wonder if all of this is just due to the larger number of LANs going on or if it's because of IPL's reduced emphasis on invites.
Both, really. Especially Blizzard WCS has added like 20-30 completely new tournaments that make weekends without any important matches going on incredibly rare. Additionally, IPL's format changes - removing invites and, more importantly, the open bracket at the event itself means that there are a lot more spots to distribute and they haven't found a qualifying system yet that is deemed acceptable and fair by everyone.
The last IPL's were attended by Koreans winning the qualifiers, Americans with enough money to travel there and attend the Open Bracket and the few invites they extended to previous winners and Korean superstars.
Now that a lot more players see a chance to actually qualify, there's naturally going to be more discussions if things don't go the way these players expected.

So even if they were clashing with a LAN that weekend, players will still able to duke it out in the open bracket. IPL 5 has no open bracket. These online qualifiers are EVERYTHING.

EDIT: Nevermind, poster above me said the exact same thing :D

So 2 options for IPL, #1 is be stubborn and piss off players, alienate fans and overall have a much weaker player pool (specifically a foreigner player pool, which is what makes $$$), or #2 change the date, give these huge names chances to qualify, raise the overall talent pool of your tourney and become a community loved event.
People arent looking at this fact, at least as far as ive seen, but if you take away alot of these major NA and European players then the chances of Korean dominance is much higher, guess what, most fans hate random korean code b player vs random korean code b player in the semi finals. Its not really fair but thats how it is, IPL is shooting themselves in the foot big time. You lose out on WhiteRa, Scarlett, HuK, IdrA, Incontrol, Ret, Bly, TITAN, Drewbie and alot of other players I dont want to do research on. Idra would probably stream lol, thats minus 5k viewers not to mention all the fanbases these players bring in and the fact that you are severely crippling the foreigner chances of do well in this tourney
Overall IPL can be smart about this or they can be stubborn. Its a pity because IPL is one of my favorite events of the year but now alot of really cool foreigners are getting fucked. Its not IPL's fault but if they fix it they will earn the love of the community, which if you look at something like the GESL, is a perfect example of why you need the communities support. Hope it gets changed for you guys

I need to agree, to alienate all the top Canadians and a lot of top EU players is kind of dumb :/

I'm pretty sure I signed up for this but didn't get a confirmation email..? Is there any place we can see player list to confirm registration or should I just sign up again?

Bad timing.....but IPL 4 was where Illusion made his sick run. Break out tournament for him. Calling it now!!
|
Is there a good reason for this being on a weekend? Why would anyone put their only chance to qualify on a weekend, especially one where NASL, WCS and MLG are going on.
This would've worked 2 years ago, when there were'nt that many offline tournaments, but nowadays even offline events overlap sometimes.
Don't put your qualifers on a weekend, if you want good players to qualify for your tournament!

IPL 4 wasn't Illusion's breakout tournament. He made the championship brackets at MLG Providence 5 months earlier

Pointing go a thread that few people saw posted in May isnt a justification. This is exposing huge format flaws in IPL, its like several events of poorly thought out formatting, I dont understand ghis at all.
I can almost guarsntee thst no team leader was contacted dirdctly on Skype about i
This actually made me chuckle. A bunch of people are saying "Xeris is a guy who's always on top of it for his players etc etc", and the Xeris himself says he didn't know about these qualifiers.
IPL done goofed on this one.

I don't know what a proper solution to this could possibly be. A big problem that a lot of amateur NA players had with the TSL qualifiers is that they were during the week and they couldn't play in them due to having to work or something else. Case in point, you can't appease everyone.

How do we verify we're signed up. I'm not on the player list in the OP HUH

edit: o u do.. well u can cast replays whatever lulz
IPL should not have to accomodate the other leagues, even though it's in their best interest to do so... but maybe they just don't care about NA players since koreans will win the thing anyway oo
So everything works out! You'd lose no matter what! Im glad everyone is happy now.

Everything works out except for the part where tournaments actually matter for more than just the player who wins it.

Two things:
1) Even if it wasn't IPL's fault, technically, and even if IPL established their dates first, I still don't think it's unreasonable to think that events the size of WCS Canada finals AND NASL Grand Finals might be big enough to warrant shifting the dates of this online qualifier. HuK made some good points that Scarlett and basically the ENTIRE Canadian field won't be able to participate (along with IdrA and iNcontrol, now that they are casting NASL). Poor Canada.
Obviously, it's a lot easier to shift it sooner rather than later (especially since it's an online qualifier with no actual venue booking), but at ~1 day before, shifting it may no longer be feasible.
2) The customer is always right. In this case, the "customer" would be the audience and maybe also the players. So even if you can't give us / the players what they're asking for, I think it always goes over better if the organizers make us feel like they understand how tough/sticky/unfortunate the situation has become, even if IPL still believes they are completely in the clear.
Just my two cents (aka. "rant")
