Amateur is defined by the following: Amateurs must not have earned more than $1,000 in live events.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Im not gonna lie, IPL is confusing the shit out of me with regionals/qualifers/champinoships etc. And i am not finding good detailed threads about this.
The amaeur satellite: I would like to play in this, i have a question though. Is it going to be amateurs, or is it going to just be 'Every KR that hasn't yet won 1k'.....

It's anyone at all who doesn't have over 1k in live SC2 tournament winnings, so there are many Koreans on GSTL teams who haven't been in Code S (or had any other big live tourney scores) who are eligible.
IGN ProLeague Season 5/Amateur Championship
That will give you some idea of the players who are eligible (SlayerS_Crank, ZenexST_Life, GosuIceCream (formerly oGs.Illusion), etc.) The difference is that the Amateur Championship gave out one paid trip to IPL5, while the Satellite will only give out places in the tournament, so there might not be as many Koreans attempting it. Not every team has the resources to send players overseas without expenses covered. Of course, Koreans on foreign teams are another matter entirely.
It's a free registration, so why not give it a go?

Oh i will...I just think using the word Amateur is wrong
why not rename it code b in that sense
edit: as in, why do amateurs have to play vs KR pros that live in a pro-gaming house. kinda defeats the whole 'amateur' level
2nd edit: in fact, the amateur tourney looks harder than the NA or EU ones, lol @ this formatting and no open bracket..How is Crank or Life an amateur
3rd edit: your point about this not giving a free trip i guess may stop it, but i have a feeling its gonna be the same as the previous amateur one.

Yeah, like a bunch of things about the IPL5 qualifying process, it's not optimal, but it's their first try at doing things this way, so it may improve in the future (though I miss the open bracket). The problem is that it's hard to put in effective eligibility restrictions beyond pure winnings...perhaps a blacklist of teams along with the winnings cap, but then you have to take top non-Korean teams into account, and declare a line between pro/semi-pro teams. It seems like it could get a little messy.

Tis pretty simple. Take away the shitty 'monetary' rule, and add actual rules.
Amateur Rules:
1. Must not live in a Progaming House 2. Must not be part of a Progaming Team 3. Must not have placed highly in any known/good tournament.
The racist rule: They could go really far and use the above 3, with an added rule of 'must live in NA or EU regions'. (this is not ideal, but would make sure lesser known KR pros aren't winning amateur events, they are pros, not amateurs, even if they dont win money)
Now these are very basic, and would need to be more detailed/defined/etc. But all of that would prevent actual pro's from joining. Unless they just want a tourney for pros who haven't 'broke out yet'. If thats the case please rename it.

I don't understand. Why would koreans who don't win money participate? In the satalites, IPL does NOT pay for flight/hotel, so paying to get from korea to Vegas would be very very expensive, probably not something lesser known korean players are willing to/can do

You raise a good point that came to mind earlier, but I didn't post: If it's strictly based on SC2 live earnings, then all the current KeSPA players would be eligible to enter the Amateur Satellite. (That Anaheim tournament didn't pay out any money, did it?)

Looks like Sting and a couple of Koreans on foreign teams, but far less participation from Koreans than it looked like there was going to be, given the turnout at the Amateur Championship and (especially) last week's Asian Satellite.

They're going to add more qualifiers and places in the live event to appease the players who had conflicts (NASL/WCS Canada on the NA Satellite date, and perhaps WCS Ukraine/Russia on the EU satellite date) and their fans. It's in the OP of official Amateur Satellite thread, along with a sort-of pre-announcement of the location and date of IPL5 (November the something-or-other at the Cosmo).
By the way, I'm shocked that TSL didn't get anyone registered for the Amateur Satellite, because if there's anyone that I'd figure would be able and willing to send players to the US, it would be Coach Lee. Now that I look back at the Amateur Championship entry list on Liquipedia, it appears that they didn't enter anyone in that, either. Perhaps they decided to honor the sprit of the "Amateur" title by not entering...
...or maybe I'm trying too hard to find something in this that makes sense. They didn't show up last week, either
