Ghostking won the head to head against both Lure and JYP, meaning even if he lost to July and Nestea he would advance when the winner of the PvP tied him 2-2.
GSL wastes no time I guess. Offseason, what's that? Although there is a reasonable period between up/downs and the start of the next actual season. Code S starts June 11th.

I think this is because they want to get the Code S roster finalized as quickly as possible, so they can work on production and stories.
yeah there's like a two week break between this finishing and code S starting haha plenty of time :D but there's still GSTL to fill the time! thanks dodgin for the LR thread! (although i'd title this [Up/Down] Group A 2012 GSL Season 3) so they're easier to tell apart in the sidebar :D woop
hoping for ghostking/jyp, expecting ghostking/nestea!
There is a break between Up/Downs and Code S because GSTL will be next week for five days and the next week for three. The next two weeks were supposed to be five days each of GSTL, but the second week got cut down to only three games due to oGs folding.

Nice preview, but I'm frustrated to not have a review of the best code A day (ever) !

JYP ASSESSMENT
Against v ZERG. JYP is competent vs zerg, having recently beaten July and Fruitdealer. But most of his wins are against lesser zergs such as Seal and Life. Notably, he has performed against the aggressive zergs, July and Fruitdealer.
Against v TERRAN. JYP has 8-28 record against Terran, and of his last 22 games against Terran, he has lost 20. That’s less than a 10% winrate over the last 22 games against Terran.
Against v PROTOSS. JYP has a strong record against protoss. He has recently beaten Hero, SaSe, HongUn, anypro, Vines and Tester. However, he loses against the best, such as Alicia and Oz (and has lost to Hero in as many games as he’s beat him).
GHOSTKING ASSESSMENT
Against v ZERG. Ghostking isn’t the best zerg killer. He’s racked up plenty of losses against pretty poor zergs, including Seal, Terious, and Monster, as well as better zergs, like LosirA, Leenock and Zenio.
Against v PROTOSS. Ghostking has recently been crushing the absolute best of toss. Wins include against Choya, PartinG (best PvTer in the world), AcE, Squirtle (GSL finalist) and Oz (former would-be successor to MC as King of Toss).
JULY ASSESSMENT
Against ZERG. July has a poor record against zerg. I suspect that might be because he plays too aggressive, and that can be exploited by simply getting a spine up early and getting defensive banes. A quick +1 or 1-1 roach timing could kill him off two base.
Against TERRAN. July wins and loses against the best and worse. Wins include against MVP and MKP although he’s lost to top terrans in equal numbers too.
Against PROTOSS. July is pretty solid against protoss with wins against HerO and Genius as of late. Having said that, he also recently lost to JYP.
NESTEA
Against ZERG. Nestea is ridiculously solid against zerg, with a 28-6 record, and recently with wins over DRG, Idra, LosirA and July. Of course, he loses some, but it’s ZvZ.
Against TERRAN. Nestea has immense experience against Code S terrans and has won and lost against the best. Lately he has faltered and made awfully poor decisions, including in his last games against Keen.
Against PROTOSS. Nestea has a great record against protoss too, with a 24-9 record. He’s beaten InCa, Genuis, Naniwa and HongUn lately, although he’s also lost to MC, Genius, HuK and tails.
LURE ASSESSMENT
The guy is new, and has hardly any games on record. He’s lost more than he’s won but that’s no surprise, especially seeing as some of the games are against the best. He recently beat InCa twice, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the mirror is his best matchup.
1. JYP – NESTEA
Although JYP is competent against zerg, he has performed better against cheesy ergs. Against a strong macro zerg, who is resistant to cheese and strong at all stages of the game, and despite Nestea’s slight decline as of late, I favour Nestea.
Prediction: Nestea. Confidence interval: 75%
2. JULY – LURE
With Lure the natural underdog, I have to give it to July.
Prediction: July Confidence interval: 60%
3. JYP – GHOSTKING
Given JYP’s absolutely abysmal record against T, and GhostKing’s absolutely stunning record against P, GhostKing has this without a doubt.
Prediction: Ghostking. Confidence interval: 90%
4. JULY – NESTEA
July has a shot against Nestea but Nestea is just too good, and solid at ZvZ too. I doubt we’ll see hatch openings and I think Nestea will simply outplay July in ling and potentially bling fights, and squeeze a few extra drones for a win. On top of this, in their last encounter, Nestea beat July.
Prediction: Nestea Confidence interval: 80%
5. LURE – GHOSTKING
Not only is Lure the natural underdog, but Ghostking is an absolute protoss killer.
Prediction: Ghostking. Confidence interval: 100%.
6. JULY – JYP
JYP is competent vs zerg and has recently beaten July. Yet July is also solid against protoss. I marginally give the edge to JYP, with little confidence:
Prediction: JYP Confidence interval: 25%
7. LURE – NESTEA
With Lure the natural underdog, I have to give it to Nestea.
Prediction: Nestea Confidence interval: 80%
8. JULY – GHOSTKING
Although GhostKing isn’t amazing against zerg, July has been playing odd against terran as of late. Silly mutalisk choices, a refusal to get roaches, and excessive banelings instead of lings have lost him games. GhostKing is likely to win.
Prediction: GhostKing. Confidence interval: 85%
9. LURE – JYP
With Lure the natural underdog, I have to give it to JYP, and especially considering JYP’s excellent record against protoss.
Prediction: JYP Confidence interval: 85%
10. NESTEA - GHOSTKING
Although both solid players, Nestea is the favourite, particularly because of Ghostking’s weaker record against zergs. There is a chance that Nestea will falter as against Keen, and get killed by hellions. Yet, I think he’ll have smartened up since that debacle.

Seal and life are "lesser" than July and Fruitdealer??
not many zergs are ahead of them except symbol, nestea, leenock and drg maybe curious??
neither of them have much exposure but they are seriously highly rated among korean players

This group seems really close to me , I could either one (with maybe the exception of Lure) advance to Code S. No matter who will go through, some guys are going to have a difficult code A RO48 match.
JYP <Entombed Valley> NesTea July <Metropolis> Lure JYP <Dual Sight> GhostKing July <Ohana> NesTea Lure <Atlantis Spaceship> GhostKing July <Cloud Kingdom> JYP Lure <Antiga Shipyard> NesTea July <Daybreak> GhostKing Lure <Antiga Shipyard> JYP NesTea <Ohana> GhostKing JYP 3 - 1 Ghostking 3 - 1 Lure 2 - 2 Nestea 2 - 2 July 0 - 4 A fairly hefty amount of bias in there, I want JYP to do well again, I hate all this EG curse rubbish that gets thrown around in these threads. I can't see a zerg going through today, unless they completely turn on the fire.
Oh man I forgot how emotional these music videos can get. A lot of the contemporary korean pop music feels like where american pop music was ~15 years ago, but with elements of new style/culture.

Hive on the way for July. Stargate started by Lure.
I don't understand why July doesn't spread creep. He was a 400apm monster in BW, he's definately able to do it... but just doesn't. He literally hasn't put a tumour down in 18 mins... So weird!

Normally protoss players are confused and don't exactly know how to deal with a Zerg who goes ling-bling-muta with infestor-brood in zvp. Lure seems to be comfortable against it, going for storm instead of colossi and doing amazing feedback and storm and also has the right zealot count against July's army.

He didn't make them in the end though but I guess the situation wasn't right considering he had to deal with mass lings after that. The storms and force fields were so brutal.
July just plays differently from every other Zerg on the planet and I love it, but it's not working out especially against Protoss. Storm is just too good against low-tier Zerg units that are not Roaches.
GSL wastes no time I guess. Offseason, what's that? Although there is a reasonable period between up/downs and the start of the next actual season. Code S starts June 11th.
I think this is because they want to get the Code S roster finalized as quickly as possible, so they can work on production and stories.
If Sundance is to be believed, U&D was originally supposed to be two weeks later, conflicting with Anaheim, but "the players chose" MLG.

his maxed composition was better than the roach one. Roaches (or hydralisks) is really bad at this stage of the game, not to mention that he didnt have the upgrades. It's just, that he didn't do damage with the mutas, he didn't deny the Protoss third base and then tried to fight maxed Protoss without 20Broodlords...

holy crap i just realized a way to play with this muta style that would make it incredibly powerful
in that game, july could have say built 12 more mutas as the templar archives were going up and then send in all the mutas to fight and kill all the sentries
you probably lose 1 muta for every sentry you kill. so your spending 100/100 to kill a 50/100 sentry
however, BAM, the moment all the sentries are dead you pump out a ton of lings/banes and a few more mutas, and you attack the toss and BAM he only has a couple sentries he just warped in with 50 energy a piece, thats only a couple forcefields, nowhere near enough, and almost every toss will be attempting to get storm at that point so thats 200 gas wasted not going towards sentries and BAM its just an utter rapestomp because the toss has no forcefields
holy that this is genius. this is so genius the idea just appeared to me in my head
holy crap thats gonna pwn... gonna use this on ladder asap
mutas to the rescue!! mutas will destroy those pesky sentries

His build loses to a 7 gate push though.. If lure was decisive enough and do a 7 gate instead of expanding, he would have won earlier.

yeah i guess theres a reason every toss massively scouts for mutas, because of that situation i described above smart fast muta play can demolish forcefields.
in the game itself july was allowed to play extremely greedy and get tons of bases and muta tech for free... i guess its not a very good example july was allowed to be extremely greedy that game

Yep. Here's the quote from the recent GameSpot interview:
GS: What happened with GomTV?
SD: You know, we grew really quickly and started making some money, wanted to do more, and the players came back saying nice things about us, and it's like…competition? Partnership? It's like, you're not gonna do it the way we want to so they went out and got a new partner, which is great, and I hope it continues to work. But I can't worry about that, we've got Anaheim coming up here in a couple weeks and they made this behind-the-scenes announcement that Up & Down matches would be at the same time. Well, all of the players chose us. I think that should tell you something.

After watching the PL games I would say yes.
They've got sick micro, but they're pretty much mid to low masters players for the time being. I think a lot of them have the potential to absolutely dominate in a couple of months though.

Proleague games have all been awful compared to current SC2 standards.
Did Flash play yet?
Yeah, got rolled by Effort. Went CC first, Effort took a fast third. Then Flash took a fast third and maxed on basically marine medivac with like 3 tanks. Got cleaned up by 2 waves of muta/ling/bane.

Yeah, he refused to make tanks against Muta Ling bling.
He refused to pressure at all and let EffOrt comfortably go to 3 bases with 0 damage and then when EffOrt attacked he caught Flash with his pants down, tanks weren't sieged and marines weren't pre-split.
On May 21 2012 19:03 IshinShishi wrote: After watching those games I'm really wondering if some of the PL guys have any catching up to do.
Sure, they have a LOT of catching up to do, mostly in the decision making department, but that's normal since they don't know the game well yet. Micro and macro looked pretty well. Once he learns the game JD is gonna be a total beast at SC2, his macro was almost flawless, and his tactics were really well thought, he just didn't know WTF to do lol.

What do you mean? Letting marines run up against a ramp against a protoss with ff's isn't bad right? LOL
I'd take Lizzy over JYP any day and Reality played TvP like a boss.
Lizzy was b-team on NSHS lol. You're just judging someone playing passably well vs people playing at a significantly lower level and thinking he's playing good starcraft.

July vs NesTea. We saw some epic ZvZ before between them =)
The proleague games were bad... Its pure bias if you honestly think that they are better than Code A or Up/Down quality. The carrier game was fun though!

10-pool inc. from NesTea, with double Extractor trick. 15 Hatchery from July.
NesTea scouts the hatch. 16 gas from July.
NesTea is pulling all but 4 Drones! hatch is cancelled by July!
Pool is only halfway done for July, NesTea is at the natural. Spine is on the way INSIDE of July's base! July pulls Drones to stop the Spine but NesTea arrives. All the Drones fall. Six lings pop out for July, but NesTea is prepared. The Spine is burrowed and the Lings of July fall.

Indeed, none of the BW players seemed to have no clue what to do(Lizzy is a SC2 pro) in SC2. I liked the carrier games, but it became boring very quickly

he has no choice, you can't surround with drone stack, if you try you will be out-surround because of the number of units nestea has.
he has a ton of choices, wait until the pool finishes before engaging, go and basetrade with spines in his base etc. It's not a good situation to be in, but 1a-ing is a sure loss, because no matter how hard you 1a, his army is superior and you lose.

JYP is just succumbing to the EG-Virus it seems.. as soon as players join that team, they decline.. Idra was the first victim, then Huk and Puma, now JYP and Thorzain (check NY performance).
I dont think any sane T would want to play a game past 7 min on Atlantis, kinda like wanting to play vs a zerg on the first belshir. Almost asking for a lose. With current mata game as well with protoss being uber strong on the late game i hope they take it out.

Fleet Beacon and Templar Archive on the way for JYP. Huge Zealot warpin at the main and third of July, but Zergligns arrive.
The Hgh Templars of JYP manage to feedback a bunch of Infestors but they all get taken out. JYP pushes into the fourth of July, killing all the Zerglings. Brood lords are morphing in, but the Zergligns and Infestor support fall! JYP pushes forward but Zergling reinforcements arrive, JYP falls back.
Zerglings try to run by for July but there is a Zealot at the natural and the Zerglings go to the third, which is cannoned up and has a Zealot. Multiple Probes fall though.
Mothership is now out for JYP!
25.00 Storm researching for JYP now. Lings run to the third of JYP again, but are deflected. July tries to go for a Hatch in the bottom right, but it's denied quickly. Armor upgrades on the way for JYP. 8 Brood lords are out for July, the last engagement is going down at the former fourth of July.
Five brood lrods are caught in the Vortex, Stalkers blink after the remaining three, and take out two of them. Zerglings stream in and the Stalkers pull back. The Brood lords come out of the Vortex and die really fast. As the last Brood lord falls, GG is called.

It's the top two that go to Code S, so it wouldn't be over.

I'm worried because it's last. It'll probably be a cheese or an extremely standard tvz as not to reveal anything unless one of the players has code s still on the line

Right, so it's Nestea (at worst 3-1) and GKP (at worst 2-2, but nobody can tie him) vs Lure and JYP (at best 2-2). Nestea and GKP advance.

its a sad statement for teh interwebz that even at such a way above-average community like TL you cant expect to get real results with open poll rating systems... are people just voting stupidly out of spite?

If NesTea > Lure
NesTea 3 - 0 GKP 2 - 0 Lure 1 - 2 JYP 1 - 2
No-one can get 3 wins, so NesTea is guaranteed to go through. Lure vs JYP is the only match left for the two 1-2s, and they have both lost to GKP so even if one ends up 2-2, GKP advances through head-to-head.

Could be the shortest U&D ever (in the new format)
hmmm i think JYP is actually already out. the worst nestea and byun can do is 2-2 (and one of them is going 3-1 at least) and JYP lost to both and can go 2-2 at best, so he loses the tiebreaker.
Lure is the only one who can make it over Nestea or Byun, he would need things to go really right for him though.

And that would be Nestea and GKP if Mr. tea wins
The best lure and JYP could do after that is 2-2, GKP is already at 2-0 and has beat both lure and JYP.

No, JYP can make a three-way tie if Lure beats Nestea and if JYP beats Lure.
A lost two-way tie can be still be saved as a three-way tie sometimes.
5.00 MVPLure spawning as the orange Protoss in the 8 o'clock position. LG-IM NesTea spawning as the green Zerg in the 2 o'clock position.
Pool first for NesTea. Forge Fast expand for Lure.
Hatchery down for NesTea. Nexus on the way for Lure.
NesTea goes for a fast third. Lure finishes up his wall with a Cibernetics Core. First gas taken for NesTea. Third is scouted by a Probe.
10.00 Warpgate tech started by Lure. Third finishes up for NesTea.
Lure taking third gas on the natural, adding on a Robotics Facility. Metabolic Boost started by NesTea.
Lure taking the fourth gas and getting +1 attack. Lair started by NesTea.
Lure adding on 4 Gateways. 4 Gas taken by NesTea.
Immortal production started. Spire coming in for NesTea.
Another two Gateways added on for Lure. +1 armor started by Lure.
Macro Hatchery on the way for NesTea, adding on an Evolution Chamber. Warp Prism on the way for Lure, moving out with Sentry, Zealot, Immortal.
NesTea wants to run by with Zerglings but there's a complete wall with Sentries and Cannons. Lure is attacking the third of NesTea, and it falls!
Mutalisks from NesTea heading to Lure's main!
15.00 Lure attacks into the natural of NesTea, right into the Spine Crawlers! The Mutalisks of NesTea take down the cannon and sentries on the wall of Lure, zerglings run in and take down the buildings breaking the wall down. The Zerlings run further into the base.
NesTea sending to drones out of his third! The entire main of Lure has been cleaned up! THe natural of Lure now falling to lings and mutas.
lure pulling back towards his main. NesTea has rebuilt a Hatch in the top rihgt! The last pylons int he base of Lure falls, but Lure manages to throw up a single Pylon, which he guards with his army. NesTea feels confident enough to run in wiht lings and Mutas, and take out everysingle anti-air unit. GG is called!

He was never trying to hold that push, just stalling
He was just going for mutas. By making the decision to go for mutas, he forwent any chance at holding that push. As soon as he scouted it was coming, he knew this. Greedy or not, a base trade scenario was eminent the moment both players made their decisions.

And..? If protoss had just split his probes instead of 1 move them, he might have won. I don't get your point. Muta ling is a base trade compo, you can't take a protoss head on with that compo
For the first time in history, casters nailed the group standings and possibilities xD
Only because the Creator of the Universe felt bad for them and telepathically guided them to the correct results.

Splitting probes didn't matter because, regardless of how many probes survived, Lure needed to defend a Pylon. He can't kill NesTea's stuff quick enough. And it turned out that he had lost too much to the spines to be able to defend it.

I just think its silly that basetrade is a valid strategy, "I cant ever beat your army but you cant win anyways"..

so what do we learn here? Immortals are not good when your opponent goes Mutalisks. Not because they can't shoot them, but because you can't defend them as you won't have enough stalker support or blink. It's not Nestea who flipped the coin, it was Lure by going for a anti-roach push.

goodjob though man! i only caught a few of the final games though
yup, that's the one thing I forgot haha. I figured i'd leave the player total scores until the end and it all ended suddenly so I rushed to edit crossing out the non played games, results, total scores, and add in the LR.

Might be without my LRs, I'm leaving to visit my parents and apply for jobs for the summer in a couple of days, and I don't think my laptop is good enough to handle... anything.

Damn, I looked at the ratings and seen Byun vs NesTea got 5 stars.. I thought damn if two incredible players did a 5 star game I gotta see this! I go on GomTV and the vod isn't up yet so I just check the results and the game wasn't played ._.
Even though I didn't see the games I did not expect Byun and Nestea to drop games to anyone except each other ;p

But it's not like he was planning on a base trade. Mutas are meant to give you map control, deny the Protoss his 3rd until he can deal with them, and let you take a 4th relatively safely. It just happened to be a situation where the Protoss had already planned on doing a heavy push that NesTea wouldn't be able to hold, having already chosen the spire tech path.

Why not, he didnt win any big tournaments, but has a great environment. Practicing with Prime guys really gives him the opportunity to develop stuff and learn from players like MKP.
Probably one of the Outsiders next Code S, but no one is undeserved there. These Up and Downs are very tough for everyone, since they are Bo1, which often favours the worse players....
I think that, now that MVP's won his 4th GSL Championship, the fire within Nestea is burning more intensely and brighter than ever before -- he wants his 4th, too. I think we'll no longer be seeing lackluster games from Nestea. Just a feeling I have, though.

vs JYP: Absolutely massacred him. Largely because of a cleverly hidden proxy spire, but he still owned him badly.
vs July: Epitome of a build-order win, greedy 15 hatch vs 10 pool + drones. But who are we kidding? Nestea would probably eat July in a straight game anyway.
vs Lure: Looked like about midway through the match Nestea was counting on a base trade as he already had a ton of lings in position and was morphing in a lot of spines at his natural. It worked very well. Lure kinda sucked at handling it though. Got very few probes out.
