I live in Georgia and have a bunch of African American friends and they wouldnt really care. It's not the word as much as the tone when using it. If you're saying it in a condescending way of course people will be offended. If you are like what's up boy no one cares

I have to say, I'd never heard or even considered that refering to people as a boy or a groups of boys could be in any way seen as offensive, let alone racist. Really weird. What about songs like that kpop thingy with "girls bring the boys out"? Do guys think they're refering to children or being racist??
Seems that particular colloquial use must be an American thing. Interesting thing to learn though, and not like America is the only place where an odd word is considered offensive.
