Look it up; it was a term used by white slaveholders to their male black slaves as a way of implying that they were not "men", e.g. on equal footing as their white masters. | ||

You would still not use "boy" in the second person, although its really only offensive when used towards adult males - its because during Jim Crow whites in the south would always treat African Americans as though they were children, because of the belief that non-whites could not be as "mature" or "civilized" as white people. You can say that a child is a boy, but if you're using it as a second-person address you would say "kid" or "dude" or "young man" or any number of other things, but not "boy."
