The Cyber Sports Network is proud to announce a tournament like no other, with their first StarCraft II / QuakeLive Free For All Cup.
16 SC2 players will play in a Free For All (Deathmatch) Tournament, where the top 4 players after 2 rounds of Deathmatch will compete in a StarCraft II single elimination bracket to decide the first SC2/QL Champion. See full details below or at the CSN link provided.
StarCraft II is currently the largest and most lucrative esports game in the world and the Quake series is the reason for the existence of esports. These two games have changed how the community and industry sees esports and this tournament will bring the games together for the first time. This tournament is for those StarCraft II players that have recently showed an interest in QuakeLive and who have expressed an appreciation for the skill set involved.
QuakeLive is a free (in browser) First Person Shooter that requires precise mouse control and a high APM (Action Per Minute). StarCraft players know these requirements well and many of them have mastered the skills of managing a map filled with items and troops that must be given precise instructions to destroy an opponent.
Registration open to any SC2 player that is new to QuakeLive or of Amatuer status 16 Players allowed Free For All - 8 players per server will compete for the highest 'Frag' (kills) Total to determine advancing players 2 Maps per round (scores added together from each map to determine winners) 2 Rounds for the bracket Top 4 players advance to a single elimination StarCraft II bracket. (Best of 3 for all matches)
Players will use the Cyber Sports Network Events page to register for the event. Once the 'Check In' process has been completed, on the day of the event, administrators will divide the players into groups and post those groups, the map choices and a link to the server.
Players will play a Deathmatch (FFA) round of 2 maps. Map scores will be added together to determine the top 4 players that will advance to the next round.
Once the field of players has been narrowed down to 8 players, a final round of 2 maps will be played and frags tallied to determine the four (4) players that will compete in the StarCraft II portion of the event.
The Cyber Sports Network would like to thank players from both games in their support of our events, coverage and community involvement. CSN believes in creating relationships that transcend genres and building esports from the base...
ahh.. I will update the OP.. it should be January 2nd,2012. We figure that most people will be home that day before they head back to work and class.
This event is open to EURO or NA players. The servers will be on NYC or Chicago QuakeLive servers. We will try to put all EURO players on the NYC Servers.
Thanks for the support.. I too, think this will be a blast to see! Wish I had any SC2 skills.. I would join it myself
OP is updated. I know this may be a hard sell cause players are aprehensive to get started with it.. but for anyone that takes the 10 minutes it takes to get Quakelive running on your machine.. this could be a great event!
I have tweeted it to DJWheat and 2GD to see if we can get some of their SC2 and QL minions signed up!
FaCE.. this is for you then bro. Load up QuakeLive this week.. while things are slow in the eSports world and check it out. I think what I will do is have a Deathmatch server up every night.. labeled StarCraft II FFA Server or something.. and ill post when I have the server up and am running around in it.. and others can join to get tips and just play together! This will prepare you all for the big event!
God I want in on this so bad, QuakeLive (Q3) is an absolutely fantastic game, my adrenaline has never been so high then when I'm playing a game of QuakeLive against an equal opponent. Living in Australia, all I can do is watch from afar and support the idea, CSN fighting! Although I am abit sad it's a QL FFA and not a 1v1 bracket
We considered 1v1 and I am sure at some point we will do that..but right now.. we just need to get peeps playing the game.. and fragging things.. and nothing better then a cess of spam to do that! It should be a blast to watch.
we will have a map list up tomorrow.. and ill make sure to update this post with the list.
Count on CampGrounds to be on the list for sure though.. its not Quake if you dont have that map!
I think in this case.. to determine AM's.. we are just looking for guys that are SC2 players first.. and want to try or have tried in the past to play some Quake. Technically, I would still be considered an AM in Quake.. as I can't win shit.. but if most of these players are my skill or less... then I would say that's pretty AM.
We shall see.. lets get some more sign ups and make this thing happen!
This is awesome as i love both games. I used to play a little ql and i been playing sc2 as a main game(and planning on getting good). Since i played ql before can i enter?
John forgot to mention one thing. id Software was kind enough to donate some premium tokens for the winners of this. Sign up and have fun! I will post the map list soon and if anyone would like a server to practice on add me as a friend in qlive "xterm" and I will be more than happy to put up a server for you.
It is basically an IRC channel, where people can organize coaching. People join to either to ask for help from more experienced players, or to offer help to newlings. Everything is for free and voluntary based.
The project is quite recent and small, but anyone is welcome, regardless the skill.
this sounds awesome! It's like the only two things I do when I'm sitting at home! play 4-5 games of sc2, then an hour or two of QL, then some sc2 again! starcraft and quake is like the two games I never get sick of playing/watching! :D
The event has filled up...however, if we will take anyone that wants to sign up. The beauty of FFA is that we can just stick an odd number of people in a server and since we are only taking a specific number from each group, the format does not change. I will open the brackets up to 32 and see what happens.
We appreciate your support. I realize this is a different sort of SC2 event.. but hey.. it can't hurt to try new things!
For those that would like to find a place where other Quake Players hang out to help those that are new to the game I have posted information on a new IRC channel that offers new players coaching and help. It could be worth 20 minutes of your time. Thanks again for all of the support.
Also, later today, I will post server information where I will be hanging out for a bit. Those interested can come in and play a good friendly game.
My QuakeLive username: "Alien" -- you can add me to your friends list. Also, add "xterm". He will be the head admin for this event.
1. Go to: http://webchat.quakenet.org/ 2. Enter Nickname 3. Enter Channelname with # in front of it (#freecoaching) 4. Start chatting and finding lessons
Make sure you guy add the following CSN admins to your QuakeLive Friends List. This will make organizing who will go where and getting players into the servers a lot easier on the day of the event.
later Tonight a CSN admin or myself will post a few tips and links to some guides that will help new players understand the game a bit better.
Also, to clarify how this event will work.
Every player that "Checks In' and lets us know they are ready to play will get a chance to play.
We will post the groups in the comments of the Event page. Each group will have similar number of players.
Once the groups have been posted, a CSN admin will create a server for each group and label them by group #
A CSN admin will then message each player in each group with a direct link to the server and the server password. We will give all players around 5 minutes to make it to their server.
Once the players have arrived in their specified server, the CSN admin will have players 'Ready Up' and start their map.
2 Maps will be played per group/round and those scores will be added together (posted in the comments section of the site) and the top 4 players from each group will advance to the next round.
Once we have crowned a FFA Champion and figured out the top 4 or 8 players, they will be seeded on a single elimination bracket (using their finish in the FFA stage) for StarCraft II.
We will then play out the StarCraft II stage of the event and crown the first SC2/QL Champion!
Hello, I'm Josh aka "whally" from Back2Back Gaming's Quake Live squad. As a helpful initiative to this tournament, and to any players participating, I am here to let players in on a few easy commands to make their Quake experience more settling and easy to play.
First of all, Quake is based around a console, meaning there are a myriad of commands that can alter the gameplay that you use, that you see, and that you can experience drastically. A few of the most common commands are as follows:
To bring down your console in Quake, first go to the ESC menu. Where it says "Game Settings", click "Advanced". On the bottom right-hand side of the Game Options tab, check "yes" to where it says Enable Console and below it Allow Console Chat. This will make it so you may access the console with only pressing the ~ key (located next to the 1). Now that you have easy access to your console, let's make a few adjustments to make the game easier to process.
Simply press the ~ key and type these commands exactly as written below:
/cg_enemymodel keel/bright [[ This will make your enemies appear as the model keel, an easy to hear enemy with the appropriate hitbox for most players ]] /cg_enemycolor 1111 [[ Color codes are: 1 = red, 2 = green, 3 = yellow, 4 = blue, 5 = cyan, 6 = purple, 7 = white, 8 = black. You can set any combination of colors to make your enemies easier to see, for example green would be cg_enemycolor 2222 ]] /cg_fov 100 [[ Default is 100, but most players tend to use 110. It's up to your personal preference ]] /cg_autoswitch 0 [[ Setting this to 1 will automatically switch to the weapon you just picked up. It can become very annoying if it' remains enabled ]]
Quake's console also allows you to be able to bind weapons and commands to keys on your keyboard. You can set almost all of your desired commands in the ESC menu by going through the Controls and Game Settings tabs. If you would like to test out my personal cfg (configuration), I have uploaded it through mediafire and linked below. Also, I have linked several youtube videos explaining the basics of Quake's physics, movement, and a few basic strategies to help you newer players out. Happy fragging!
To find your Quake Live folder, enable "Show hidden files and folders", then...
Windows Vista: %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3
Windows XP: %appdata%\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3
GNU/Linux: ~/.quakelive/quakelive/home/baseq3
------Downloads------
B2B.whally's cfg: http://www.mediafire.com/?9xrbccsjhwohoeo [[ To install the .cfg file, find your home/baseq3 folder and place the cfg in that folder. Then enter a server and type /exec whally.cfg ]]
I wish you good luck in that cup Perhaps, you can take a look at tony vs the world's best players in FFA, its a great presentation of how things can turn out there!
zionsc.. please sign up. The idea is to bring the 2 games together. There are a few solid QL players in the bunch..but that does not mean that their SC2 skills are at the same level as some others. So.. do not worry about your skill level at QL.
Let me know if that helps. thanks for the support.
Your CSN Admin will message you the LINK to your server and the password to join. If you get to a server and your ping is very high, let your admin know and we will try to switch you with another player.
I signed up for this tournament all the way from Korea and trained with Duels leading up to this tournament. I kept going back to the tournament page to make sure I was in and to check the time. I had the window open all morning and I was playing duels on Korean servers here to get ready for the matches.
I showed up at ~8:10pm est to my server, according to the tournament page, which is an hour before the thing actually is supposed to start, because I wanted to make sure that Daylight Savings Time wasn't going to fuck with me (sometimes EST is 13 hours behind Korea, and sometimes its 14). I was told by the admin that I was actually an hour late!
To their credit, they tried to ge tme into another server that was running late or whatever, but I had already promised someone that I would cover for them at their work leading up to the tournament's first matches at 9:15pm est so that I would have the rest of the morning and early afternoon to dedicate to this tournament. Because I had already promised the guy that I'd cover for him for the hour before the tournament, I wasn't able to play.
God damnit.
Why'd they have to change the time on me. I was even here training on Quake Live's Duel servers at 7pm EST! If only I had known! Stupid me for checking only the official tournament page.
we did not change the time.. we only changed the time that it showed for the SC2 portion of the event. We were sending out messages to all of the players that were checked in about servers and what to expect from the FFA rounds.
I am very sorry and we will make it up to you sir. We will run another one of these on a date that best works for you.
I will message you personally sir and we will work it out.
you guys weren't/aren't dicks about it or anything so I accept your apology and all. it just sucks because i was looking forward to it. that's all.
i saw your pms as well leading up to it, as well. maybe i just skimmed too much after the first couple (you guys sent out like 13 messages altogether to me before i found out what happened) and missed the whole show up by 7pm bit. or if i did see it, maybe i just assumed it was for the final checkin time (there were like 4 pms that were only about the checkin, so it was a reasonable assumption imo as i skimmed everything).
Very sorry about. We also tried to contact you just before Final Round of FFA.. we were gonna get you in it. I do apologize. We will make it up to you sir! How does next Tuesday look for ya?
