Guys would you really want Bo3 in groups of 7 (Seven!!) players in ? Worst case scenario - 21 matches in each group times 3 (Since Bo3) times 8 groups. 504 maps played worst case scenario - 336 maps played best case scenario - that is shitloads of time and effort from players. It is reasonable to do Bo1 in such a large groups. It was not a problem for BW - just please get over it and start discussing actual games. As for XiGua i think he is considered best SC2 player in China right now. So no surprise he won his group 6-0

You have the awesome player like mvp going through and you get to see fresh blood in for once too. Up and coming pro players who made it through. Its a perfect mix of known and "unknown" for next stage.

MLG has a whole open backet of IIRC 256 players and they don't stream every match. I'm sure WCG is capable of having stations that have players playing off stream. Anyways, so is Fenix still on IM?

All the Chinese players are\notorious for their inconsistent play...from brood war's Lx, F91 to Loner, XiGua. The only notable exception is Pj, but he retired before SC2 saw the light of the day in China.

As for inviting less players - it was all made by qualifiers - they try to keep sort of Olympics style. WCG is the only one tournament that brings out players from countries that wouldn't normally even attend (due to cash and other reasons). I understand it sucks if your favorite player (like Idra or Sen) goes out in group stage. But that does not make whole concept bad. Lets wait for playoffs and see what games that bring. ps. Fenix is still on IM - unless there's something very behind scenes going on now ;-)

I think group play is the best way to do this, since it's better than double elimination- the grand finals are always anti-climatic since the person in the winners bracket starts off with a huge advantage.

If he qualifies 2nd then he'll be matched up against MVP in the Ro16, and we all know how MVP vs Supernova always ends up. Fortunately SN's group is one of the easier ones so as long as he beats Fenix he should get 1st no problem. =( Now I'm nervous when I shouldn't be.

The reality is that there's 56 players playing 6 matches against each other, or 28*6=168 matches total. If it was BO3 it would be like 400-500 games played. That would take all week, especially considering how long some of these games can take on the current large maps. I think group play is the best way to do this, since it's better than double elimination- the grand finals are always anti-climatic since the person in the winners bracket starts off with a huge advantage. They could have potentially done what DH did with x groups of 4 twice. Would have cut the number of games substantially. dreamhacks system: 56 players = 8 groups of 4 + 8 groups of 3 = 48 + 24 = 72 series which cuts it down to 32 players = 8 groups of 4 = 48 Total = 48 + 72 = 120 Gives you a total of 240-360 games. So at most double what they are doing right now. I mean it's not that big a difference when you think about it. Of course everything is dependant on the number of computers they have running and time to dedicate to SC2. Certainly would have been much fairer. Anyways, I don't really fault WCG. Not a ton of options for them. And I guess computer/broadcasting time is limited given they always do BO3s through the entire championship bracket. EDIT: Another thing. The huge groups lends itself to much more ties (especially in a BO1 format). 3/4 groups yesterday had ties for second place. Half the groups had to play tiebreakers.

Edit: Nevermind, saw the tiebreakers listed at the bottom. Kas does indeed deserve to move on. Sad that Happy is out. =(

Why is that, considering Happy beat Kas in their match? (Keeping my fingers crossed for Happy...) They played tiebreakers. Kas beat both happy and welmu.

MLG Open is such a GRIND. More physically than mentally really. WCG also has a long tradition of group play for Starcraft, favouring a reasonable schedule with a reasonable format. It is true that there must be a different strategy in bo1 but it's undeniable that 7 games against different opposition doesn't make it MUCH more likely for upset. I'd contribute the off-days for IdrA and Sen to the extremely gruesome (yes it is that bad) schedule they had recently. By the same token, I wouldn't be shocked if HuK is bounced.
