It's not hard to hop into vent with a friend that nobody knows about and he can just directly feed you what's going on while he's watching the stream..
This isn't the thread for it, but the matches are played with just the two players + NASL observers. NASL then spends a day creating a stream of seamless content that is broadcast the next day. So you'll be seeing footage on the stream from a day ago.
Funny how Koreans are being called patriottic when their Starleague is being called "Global" Starleague whilst their American counterpart is named "North American Starleague".
I blame it on the organisers though for not being clear who are supposed to be able to participate and why it is called the North American Starleague when there's going to be lots of non-Americans playing.
If they're going to exclude Koreans (which I'd be surprised if they did) why would Europeans be allowed to play? And if they're going to allow Europeans, but not Koreans, how is that not discrimination?
It seems to me that some second tier American players are getting cold feet. In reality though, if they were really perceived to be contenders for the title, they wouldn't be excluded.

Oh, so know you don't even count the EU players, they would also be "boring" to watch ? Because if you include the EU players you clearly don't stand a chance...
You really think that people that are willing to pay the ticket wants to see you against NrG or another nonamer because you're part of the community ?
do you realise why there is so much hype about the TSL 3 ?
When there is a big tournament like NASL people and players want to be blown away by the level of the players, they don't want to see irrelevant people that participate on a forum....god

For one thing, they sort of have, lately. Dreamhack, IEM, FXOpen(i)s, etc. It's got to start somewhere. And therein lies the second point. There's a logical disconnect somewhere in denying someone the chance to be involved in the foreigner scene because they haven't been a part of the foreigner scene.
You can laugh all you will at their minute-or-less videos (the "jibberish" comment from the Nrg fellow I have never heard of was particularly classy), but this shows that they want to be part of our scene. Is it because of money? Who cares if it is? For one thing it probably isn't, not completely. I'm sure they are like any other people, and would love the chance to travel to different places and compete, perhaps gaining a ton of fans you didn't even know where there in the process. And it's not like Foreigner pro-gamers don't care about money.
I think that if the NASL organizers restricted Korean entries into the league too much, it would betray their stated goal. Namely to have the worlds best players competing. Obviously there should be some sort of restriction, so that all of the players aren't Korean (though I have my doubts that that many Koreans would even try to get in), but we need a fair few Koreans for this to be legitimate.
Sure, a Korean could end up winning the first few seasons. Or Idra could. Or Ret. Or WhiteRA. Either way, can you imagine the publicity the NASL would get in the SC2 community, or even the gaming community in general, the first time a foreigner beat a fairly known Korean? It would make it all worth it.
?? You saw July's video, they read these off a piece of paper probably prepared by a manager. Their videos are more of a turn-off to me than anything, as it shows they can't even communicate properly during the event. They don't want to be a part of the scene, they just want to win the cash with as little effort given as possible. Bashing NrG's manager who has grown the team for six years for a valid comment is also particularly classy.
As little effort given as possible? GTFO kid. NASL seriously need to put some age restriction
They can't possibly give less effort than reading a 1 min statement in a manner impossible to understand. At least practice a couple times to get it to be understandable.
I doubt they purposefully did it that way, this isn't their native language, yet they tried. They could've just stood there, spoke in korean, and had text float across instead, but they opted to try to speak english as best they could to try to appease americans and hopefully their foreigner fans. It's kind of shitty that you're attacking their lack of english speaking ability as some sort of barrier for them to enter. What if GSL required you to submit korean applications, we'd be outraged, and i doubt they'd call any foreigner to WHO TRIED their best "giving low effort".
I'm not screaming bloody racism or anything, i just don't see this as a reason to outright deny them. I didn't realize NASL application VODs were based on how witty or silly you can make it to get in. If that's the case I guess a lot of the straight up videos don't get in either, like TLO or SeleCT
I think it would be fantastic if GSL required you to learn some korean. I don't want every kid who thinks he's half decent going to korea.
Come on.. now you are just grasping at straws..
But in case you are really trying to make a valid argument,
half decent in what? in starcraft or in korean language?
Do you think it was rude for the TL guys to go and qualify for GSL despite not being able to speak Korean. Same with iNcontrol, Kiwikaki, Moonglade, Spades, etc. Do you think they were trying to get GSL bucks and fame without learning the language and thus they are putting minimal effort and thus it was rude?
Yep. The people who just go for a week to try and qualify I think is dumb.
VTSpade and bunch of other VTs who i don't recall try to quality for Code A and fail. So you think your teammates are dumb too?
There could be nothing more poisonous to the growth of Esports in the West than proliferation of these borderline xenophobic, mostly absurd arguments to actually keep Koreans out of the NASL,
Beyond the embarrassing plea that they are too good and 7 of the ro8 being Koreans would ruin your interest, you discredit American players, and weaken the credibility of the league as a whole. Luckily however, it's safe to assume the majority of known, skilled players that will actually make it into the NASL will encourage and be honored by the participation of Koreans, and the opportunity to play in a legit tournament. The entire notion of "playing with people you know" does not matter to true competitors that are seeking the title of a champion. The Koreans don't play MLG because it means nothing. A tournament with a Halo stage 15 feet away and a terrible prize pool is not worth the time of people that come from a gaming culture like Broodwar in SK.
Not to mention, Korean teams have always had absolutely incredible sponsors (multinational corporations).. so any news coverage the NASL is able to catch I would imagine would be more effective should the general populace be given an insight into what a E-sports could be in the West.
The big voices of opposition so far have been an unknown with a joke app vid, a team manager I've never heard of, and a child anyways...
I much prefer to watch MLG than GSL. I think that's a valid comparison.
weird. MLG is a joke compared to the GSL. The entire MLG format is just stupid beyond belief
I think "stupid beyond belief" is a little harsh but I tend to agree overall. GSL matches tend to involve well prepared builds with the opponent in mind. Its like a boxing match that has been hyped for weeks while MLG is like mud wrestling through a deep field of random opponents. No thought or time to prepare anything special. just GO GO GO. Before I even have time to process the match up the game has already started.
I guess there are some people out there who prefer MLG to GSL (i actually never knew this)
On March 16 2011 06:34 GP wrote: [ I definitely wouldn't call MLG a joke, but I much prefer GSL as a spectator.
well when I think of MLG the first thing that comes to mind is select grinding through the losers bracket to the finals. Let's be realistic. Select had no chance in that series against idra. SC2 is an exhausting game to play, and I can only imagine how exhausted select was going into that final.
with koreans in the tournament, it will make EVERYONE practice a lot harder.
if you're afraid of the korean's skill level, bunny, maybe you should practice more. as a "progamer" you should be excited to have a chance at facing champions, bonjwa, and other high level players without having to fly to korea.
are you not excited just thinking you have a chance to see how far you've come? the feeling of beating a korean progamer? are you scared?
I think this whole argument is getting way out of hand. I think there is merit to both sides of the argument. I'd like to see a few Koreans come and compete with foreigners, but I also want to see the foreigners compete in their own league. I think a good compromise, would be a few Korean players are allowed in, and it would be decided on who is most commited. I think inviting Koreans is a good and bad thing. It can be really awesome if some good Koreans come over and share their strats help players improve. At the same time, I don't want to see MC/MVP/etc winning the GSL and the NASL at the same time. If anything, I think the TSL3 will be a good representation. As cool as it is that TL is adding in Koreans, I can't help but feel 9/10 it will be MVP/MC vs Nestea. And I was really hoping it would be the decider in who was the best foreigner between IdrA or Jinro or similar.
edit: sorry mods, I was posting this as the above post linking to the thread came up

Why this attitude? Let them come! I'd love to play vs the top koreans, I don't care if they're in it to "steal my money", I really don't want the whole BW-attitude back again where it's the "newbie foreigners" doing their own thing while korea is the real deal and lightyears ahead of everyone else. We have all the means necessary (NASL!! Big teams, sponsors, players devoting all their time to this game) what says we cannot compete with the koreans? I feel like people have already "given up" on competing against the koreans, and it makes me really sad .
the problem is: if you allow all koreans to attend, you would never be able to play them. no offense to you, but its simply true.
