Well, i want to start this by saying that i don't know if this is the right place to post this kind of question although being related to the Terran race... The question is deep and maybe hard do answer but it is a simple question: What is the secret of playing Terran? To improve as a player terran? What is the secret to be a good player and to develop as a player in SC2 in general? I ask this question cause i've found myself "failing" a lot in SC2, as i got stuck in Platinum with no improvement byond this and a lot of frustration... This by any means is a qq post or balance or anything... It's just somebody asking for help to improve. I generally look at players that are in the scene but aren't in Masters league... In example: LivinPink... For me it seams that she is always developing her game. Winning here, learning something new there. And when i hop into the game it never feels like this is happening, it's always like a mess... Other player that i find interesting is HeroMarine because of his age... I mean there is no problem in being 16 years old and play so well in Master league. The question is, does he have a background in other RTS games? How does he developed so fast being so young? I'm saying this cuz i'm 20 years old with no background in RTS besides Dota which isn't an rts... I play sc2 for 2 years now and i've found myself really frustrated of being stuck in Platinum... Or even better statement. Frustrated because the lack of improvement... I know it's a hard question to answer. I just wanted to know the mindset of playing and improving in both SC2 and the Terran race... Thank you, and sorry for english mistakes here and there....

The secret of StarCraft below diamond is just trying to emulate the macro of pros, then getting the ins and outs of micro/engaging and multitasking nailed down

I think knowing where your mistakes are is a big one and actively trying to improve it. For example, my biggest problem lately has been when I work on one specific MU, at least one of my other matchups just start to suck in comparison, even if I had a very high win %. For me, my problem has been getting into the right mindset for each MU and just figuring out what to do. That means watching a lot of pros/streams/own replays and telling myself, okay in TvP, I want to keep the Toss on 2 bases, and start dropping and attacking when he takes a 3rd. And ACTIVELY forcing myself to do that.

Honestly terran is 80% mechanics, 20% stratety, while the other races are more 50-50%. This means that there is no way out, but too simply devote the hours and hours into improving your mechanics, while the other races can get away with less. Heromarine has probably just gamed a lot over the 3 years of Sc2 to get to where he is now.

When I watch the replay I look and see that if I had taken my 50 food army to his base at 12 minutes I would have walked through everything. But how do you know when to attack? I am still bronze so I am still winning 70% on just pure macro, but I feel like I need to work on that. Thanks in advance.

This is for a "for-Instance" Just like the 10 Minute TvP Medivac timing. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that Each match up has its own set of timings depends on map, build vs build and also reacting to what you scout that tells you when to attack. Working on Micro will help you immensely it will help you in recognizing whether or not you should engage and you will come out on top or not

I am still in bronze league because while I am sitting there maxing out I forget to engage and then by the time I am maxed out I think, well might as well wait to get +3/+3 and then i walk in with my massive 1A move (I kinda suck at micro) lose my army and try to keep rebuilding but eventually they just have a better army. Especially toss. When I watch the replay I look and see that if I had taken my 50 food army to his base at 12 minutes I would have walked through everything. But how do you know when to attack? The best attack timings are right when a key unit or upgrade finishes. So some key "timings" you should use to attack would be: reapers right when they finish, 2 tanks are out, 2 medivacs are out, stim is finished, 1-1 is finished, etc etc.. Try attacking earlier and you'll get a feel for it as you go.

I just wanted to know the mindset of playing and improving in both SC2 and the Terran race... Thank you, and sorry for english mistakes here and there.... I'd like to share my thoughts on this one, because I think it wasn't answered "that well". On a sidenote this could also be an own thread and quite much is true for any race, not only Terran. Just in short about the age to lay that aside: heromarine does have an advantage by being so young. The younger you are, the easier and faster you learn things. Being young also has the advantage of more free time (usually); no work, just school which should take less time; no wife or kids, maybe not even a gf. So you have a lot more time to play. Anyways, imho what's been suggested, to just mimic pro players, won't help you understand what you're doing wrong, although it can still improve your play. When copying what a pro does, you just can't know what the pro thought while playing that game. You would need to find someone who speaks out loud what he thinks while streaming his games and that's rare. So, imo to improve and develop your play you first need to understand your play. Why are you playing the way you do? Are you just playing a specific BO and throwing it against your opponent whatever he does or do you know what to do, if he changes things to counter what you do? If you understand your own play, you can start thinking about what you're doing wrong or what doesn't work and why. Just a weird example: I'm playing Mech... in all matchups (please don't laugh ). It's working quite well for me in TvT and TvZ on my level (Gold). In TvP I get my rear handed to me every time. My clanmates keep telling me that I should play Bio (as if all my problems would disappear then). But I do understand Mechplay quite well, the strengths and limitations... probably a lot better than Bio by now. Sometimes it just hits you like a hammer and so I just recently realized that it's not Mech that's my problem in TvP. It's that I react poorly to harassment. Then I even realized that I react poorly to harassment in TvT too. It just doesn't happen to me that often. So now I have something to work on and then I have improved... and I know I have.If you understand your own play, you know what you can try to adjust to solve your problems, what at the same time fits into your play or not. The best way is usually to think about the game after it ended. What may have caused the loss? Watch the replay and check where things went wrong. Think about what you can change and try it. On the other side, if you just mimic someone else, you will hit a wall, when your opponent plays a perfect counter to it. You'll hop onto a forum and ask for help. You'll get a deviation from your build and be fine... until you meet an opponent who again does something completely different, where you go to a forum for help again. This way you also improve... by adding variation over variation to your strategy book. As long as you can keep them all in mind that's ok, at least as long as you don't get a strategy thrown at you that you haven't seen yet. Understanding your own play you can react to unknown circumstances more quickly. This does have a downside though. When quite much developing your own style (this doesn't mean it can't be similar to someone else's style), it can be hard to get help from others, because they don't understand your thought process. When I'm playing with clanmates and some are observing me, they sometimes ask wtf I'm doing there... until I put the last piece of my puzzle in and they see the whole picture (it sounds greater than it actually is ).There's a kind of a middle way. If you're playing what pros play AND understand why you're playing just that, you can go to a forum, get help and include that into your own thoughts to improve. tl;dr: If you want to improve and really feel that you improved, start thinking about what you're playing and why. Only when you understand your own play, you can improve it yourself. The alternative is to copy what pros do, but that will only work as long as your opponent doesn't come up with something out of the norm.

Thank you, and sorry for english mistakes here and there.... well since terran meta is usually fucked up by blizzard every 2months, adaptability is the first thing. Jokes aside: micro, multitasking, macro - and BO luck in TvT right now. In TvP and TvZ there is not much to do aside playing very standard, just try to test out your limits every game with more multitasking and micro, even if it fails, you only improve if you try difficult things over and over again.

I would like to start playing SC2 again. The last time I played seriously, I was Masters league in WoL for Terran Oo;; So obviously I'm going to have to start over from scratch. Where should I start if I want to learn build orders and strategies? Consider me a complete noob at this point. So go ahead and throw me everything that's available out there ![]()

Terran is probably the most build-focused race out of all of them, so it requires very sharp timings and hitting all the benchmarks. Out of all the races, I feel that terran can often control the pace of the midgame the most, through drops vs protoss, and the drop/pushing of bio-mine. This means that you can focus on hitting benchmarks more, as you won't necessarily have to respond to too many midgame attacks. So try to focus on hitting those benchmarks at specific times, especially focusing on army and supply counts when medivacs come out, and at around 14-15 minutes where you would be ideally maxed in non-mirror matchups.

Dont be afraid to lose games from attacking. And always watch replays afterwards, you'll see a lot of points where your opponent was being gredy and you could ahve done damage. After doing this for awhile you'll start to get a feel for when you can do damage and when you cant.

Some are a little dated while others are pretty common still. I would also recommend checking out the TvZ 4M guide by TLStrategy http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=425617 This is pretty much what is standard nowadays in TvZ. This past Dreamhack Bucharest showed a lot of good TvTs in the groupstages and well as the bracket stage.
