@Sixtus Do you know if there's a way to turn off the game's incessant need to flag artificial conflicts? I have no actual conflicts as far as I can tell, what I think it's doing is reading all of the files in the hotkeys folder, and tries to apply (match up is a better term) the current game profiles to all of the files.Naturally, having WoL and others in there, the HotS client picks up on fake errors and throws up conlifcts. If there was a way to just shut off that feature it would be a huge relief. As of now my only solution was to keep the WoL Campaign and MP files separate from the HotS ones.
The scary thing is, if I were to enter the file to resolve the issue through the UI, upon exiting, it asks to save changes, which results in the game overwriting the files, actually causing errors that didn't previously exist. The more I think about it the more I wish Blizzard would fix up their hotkey UI so we can make all bindings on the front end.

I'd love to hear more about the sound options that were posted in the optimization videos. I personally really like hearing the Colo leave the robo bay. While I may be able to get that via my marco spam honestly I find the audio reminder very helpful. This is also the case for error alerts as well. I do understand that all the information is available via the control groups, minimap, and supply/resources counters but the extra auditory help seems to keep my mind in the game.
Also I find the game rather barren of sound if I don't have them enabled, making the game less fun.
What are the reasons behind doing this sound disabling for those of you that use it?
Thanks!

If there was a way to just shut off that feature it would be a huge relief. There's no way to turn it off. It shouldn't be a conflict between WoL and HotS keys since the client only tests conflicts for the module loaded. If you bind keys in HotS that will conflict in WoL no problem will exist until you load WoL and a chain reaction of unbinds will occur.
As of now my only solution was to keep the WoL Campaign and MP files separate from the HotS ones. The front end does not correctly test for conflicts, so it allows some that conflict and complains about others that don't. Frankly, it could be anything. If you have files with errors and files without the only way to narrow it down is to gradually add lines from one file to the other until you create the conflict within a small set. For one in TheCore it took me 40 iterations over a week to track down. Perhaps you'll be luckier. In case it's the same one we had Skip Cinematic set to Left Mouse button which it didn't like.
Part of the trouble is that the front end where you set keys has one set of conflict tests, and then when you start a game a SEPARATE set of tests is performed. The other part of the trouble is both sets of tests are flawed.

@EntropyFails I began responding to this and ended up typing enough for a Blog Post. So thanks for the motivation
@Everyone Please do checkout said Blog Post and post your opinions on settings, what you use, why, where you disagree with me, why, etc. If I have learned anything from this project it is that the best way to find answers is to discuss and debate with many people that care about what I care about. In this case, its Optimal Settings for Competitive Multiplayer Starcraft 2. I am very excited to get going on it

Hey all,
I'm interested in keyboard optimization (I.e. not starcraft... Weird, right?) Do any of you optimization junkies have experience with Dvorak or Colemak? What about with something else?
Thanks,
Ninjury

Isn't "y" a vowel in the word my?

Grammar on TL. I never would have guessed.

Lately, I've been trying to find ways to optimize my early game so that I minimize extra queuing on buildings as much as possible so I can squeeze in those mid-game buildings as soon as possible (I'm terran). It seems to me that the best and easiest way to do this is to (at least for the first ~9 minutes of the game) is to have as many buildings as possible on individual hotkeys (this includes having different hotkeys for each command center) so that I can keep perfect tabs on the production cycles.
One might argue that this is unnecessary because "you should be able to estimate the build times and instinctively know when you have to make something", but this only really works if your build is not interrupted by your opponent and if your build times are synced up.
It seems that Korean pros have come to the same conclusion as from what I can tell, they all do this.
What are your thoughts on this?

@DarkSeraph I think this is a great idea for early game, and the hotkeys are very much available on TheCore for you to do this. Just use the CGs that you aren't planning on using for early game units, and then over-write them when the time comes. I think Idra does something similar with individual hatcheries early game.

Here is an example: take any key X. Assign the following functions to X:
X: select control group Y
Ctrl X: add to control group Y
Shift + Ctrl X: create control group Y
Alt X: create camera Z
Shift X: recall camera Z
Now you have a control group and a camera bound to one key, namely X.
(Note by XYZ I don't mean particular keys on the keyboard, rather I mean to show a general formula that can apply to any key/control group/camera.)
Does this help?
Sorry, but no..
Now im not using this "The core" hotkey setup, how would i go by if i wanted to setup control group and camera on same key, etc base camera 1 and queen on same key if possible?

If you are asking if you can have the same key go to a camera location and select a control group with no modifiers (e.g. pressing "O" would select your queen and go to camera location 1), then no, that is not possible. TheCore puts cameras and control groups on the same key just as Ninjury explained.

So I've really tried to nail down the most comfortable orientation/spacing for keyboard and mouse (hence the blue painters tape). This is pretty much what I've settle on:
+ Show Spoiler +
So does that look pretty normal to most core users? For a point of reference, the arms of my chair pretty much line up with the green razer symbol and the mouse. If they look far apart, it may be because the keyboard has no number pad.

It sounds like a good idea. I'd be curious what keys you are putting things on specifically.

So I was stutter-stepping marines to the down-right corner
and I accidentally clicked Menu
and I pushed N which is my attack button because I'm on Colemak
which is the same as the surrender hotkey

This is kinda like TheCore for keyboard layouts.
Went from ~150 WPM to less than 15, just like what happened to my APM when I started TheCore.
|
That's pretty awesome. It isn't clear to me that the full optimization layout is sufficiently greater than colemak to justify using it when it is less likely to be available on other systems. What do you use?
|
@Ninjury: If you *really* want to optimize the living hell out of your keyboard, try key64 (key64.org). Also, I use Dvorak for a long time and I've really liked it!

That's really cool. I'm pretty happy with my das tho in terms of hardware. Thanks!
