Watch through the replays. Maybe someone else has the answer? (which in the case of cannon rushing there should be a ton of threads about on this forum alone).

It also helps a ton to have a friend in this game who is trying to learn with you, and one who you can experiment with. In the worst case you can try to find a coach, which might be free or charged by the hour depending on who you find. I had an hour of coaching way back when I was super frustrated with Zergs and felt that no matter what I did I didn't get any progress. It did wonders, but it was a proplayer and thusly cost me a few bucks.

See, I know that all in my head. I to try to learn from games I lose, and I can always find things I did wrong. I guess I just have a very hard time remembering to do try and apply what I know I need to be doing better in game. I'm too slow or whatever to do everything I want to do. And I also feel like I'm not improving, which is a really bummer when I do really want to get better. I know it's just a game, and I know it doesn't really matter, but it's still very hard to deal with for me.

I'm sure every proplayer has gone through the same problems as well. Sometimes you just hit a wall that lasts forever, and no matter what you do you just seem to never improve. I suggest focusing on one thing at the time and try to get really good at it. You're struggling with cannon rushes; why not start there? Make sure your earlygame and scouting is so good you never lose to any cheese again. If you continue making the worst aspect of your play into your best, you should be able to easier see progress

Edit: oh, and when it comes to anger and frustration, I'll just quote Day9: "It's just chemicals going through your body. I could give you a pill that makes you feel exactly the same. As long as you realise this, you can just control it" (or something like that, I don't remember exactly. I think its from episode 100)

This question might not have a simple answer, but I'm fed up with trying to figure it out myself.

I'm so, so, so so much trying to learn to properly use my location hotkeys. I really need some advice on it.

I use CTRL F1 through F5 for bses 1 through 5. I use SpaceBar for my rally. I hotkeyed the last two options to my 4rth and 5th mouse button (small hands, can't reach haha ^_^)...

Problem is... I don't know how to get into the habit of using them. I'll occasionally use F1 etc to move workers, but it feels super clunky (as in, the time my brain takes to process it, I might as well have used my mouse for it all)... Whenever a stressy situation occurs, I go back to what I'm comfortable with and pretty much never touch a location key again (this is excluding Space, I got into the habit of doing that !

My question is... How do I force myself to get into the habit of using my location hotkeys? I've tried and read lots of things, I'm as far as to be thinking to just drop a couple of games so I won't need speed as much to keep up with my opponents and I can just easily and casually get it done, assuming lower level opponents won't be able to put enough pressure on me so I can just macro + location hotkey.

Another little thing, anybody knows obvious uses for the mouse hotkeys ?

And lastly, HAIL MARU!

Practice. Practice, practice, practice. If you're struggling to use those location keys in a game, find a practice partner, use your favorite Build Order trainer, or just play against the Easy AI and force yourself to use those camera hotkeys. Then move to real games from there.

I, for one, use a modified version of TheCore Lite, aka Chameleon. That setup has the location keys on the letters, right next to everything else. So if moving over to the F-keys is really that uncomfortable, consider changing your hotkey setup.

I've got a couple of Simple Questions of my own: what is the approximate speed of the Viper's Abduct tentacle? Is it possible to dodge Abduct after it has been cast? Is it possible to cancel the Abduct by killing the Viper before the pull finishes?

Hello!

Returning player here and I've resolved that I am going to overcome one of my (several) weaknesses from last time I played. Basically, I was one of those people that would cursor to the edge of the screen to move the camera (in some cases like looking at enemies base/following army etc I would use the mini-map) but I have decided I don't want to do this anymore.

The thing is, I find clicking on the mini-map just as cumbersome and inaccurate (I assume with practice this will get better) but what do you do if you just need to move the camera a tiny amount? e.g, waypointing your ninth scv to the ramp to build a supply depot etc.I have bound 'drag' camera to my space bar but if there is a better way of doing things then please let me know.

Cheers.

Camera locations are key.

Bah.

Managed to post somehow before fully answering.

Camera locations are key, double tapping control groups. Using middle mouse button to move the camera (small amounts only though).

Whatever you do, don't go back to your old habits! When situations get stressy and you catch yourself reverting back just stop and don't worry about losing the match - worry about nailing those camera hotkeys just right. Even if by the time you hit the camera hotkey the actions gone (and maybe costed you the match) you just successfully trained your brain a little bit to think of camera hotkeys first, instead of what your habit may be.

Sit down and tell yourself your going to lose a Crap load of matches ... But not because you're sucking, it's because your missing those silly camera keys. You won't feel so bad about losing. Whatever you do - don't go back to your old habits, cause then you can't blame the loss on training your brain.

Edit: if you catch yourself playing a match by your old habits just gg. Not letting yourself win off of old habits is a good inscentive to stop :p

Should I be feeling guilty always SCV pulling against protoss? I've lost to their "pressure builds (read: cheese)" and deathballs so often that I feel kind of justified.

My winrate this season against protoss is almost 70%, only really losing to those "pressure builds" and the occasional protoss who just locks me out of his natural ramp with force fields until his 2/2 and/or storm finishes.

why would you feel guilty doing anything possible within the game mechanics unless it's a glitch that isn't working as intended?

Also, SCV pulling has been an honorable way to defend cheese since the old days before BW.

Yeah, SCV all in. I guess if it's good enough for Innovation, I shouldn't be one to question it. Though he plays this game for money, I play it to have fun. Losing to protoss is definitely not fun.

When you play starcraft you have to play like every protoss is a cheesy ****, that will up your winrate by a lot

In TVZ, if I open helion/banshee and I see 10-15 speedling at natural by the time my helions arrive, what sould I do? Try to roast some drone anyway and lose helions very fast? Wait for the next 4 helions to attack? Just back up and control creep?

Creep, definitively creep!

Unless you intend to do a huge hellion push and you do commit on it (but if the zerg already has some speedling there isn't much point), hellion are mostly there to have a second scoot of the front (after the initial reaper(s) get denied), and to deny creep.
As a zerg I can assure you that I prefer by far having couple hellions suicidally roasting a couple drones than always having them on my door saying "you won't creep further than nowhere, thanks".

Even more if you already have the banshee follow-up on the way, since banshee can both attack (if the zerg has useless lings AND make spore, you won't need much damage to be ahead, and if there are no spore, it's simply gg), and defend a possible burst/all in by killing banelings.

It changes depending on what race you've chosen in your profile and your amount of posts. Special people and mods have customized symbols.

And lastly, HAIL MARU!

I may not be the most qualified to answer this (top gold is my best finish), but as a zerg player I got very used to using camera location keys because that is the method I use for injects. I set my bases to F1 to F5. So my inject cycle would be F1 -> select queen and inject, F2 -> select queen and inject, etc. That got me use to using them pretty quickly. Now it's almost second nature and I use them all the time when checking bases and moving between them. Perhaps a method you could use would be to set them and spam them at the start of the game when not much is happening yet.

There is also a custom game mod called SALT (save and load tool) that allows you to restart from the beginning of a game very quickly without leaving the game, creating a new one, starting it, etc. You could play for say 6 or 7 minutes, get a couple bases up and just practice switching between bases using only your camera location hotkeys while building things. Then do a quick restart and practice again from the beginning.

For mouse hotkeys, I have a Logitech G500, though I really only use one button on it. The button that is in good position of my thumb I set to Ctrl. This makes it easier I find to set control groups and camera location key because I don't have to contort or stretch my hand to do so.
