I just know this has been asked before but I have been looking and honestly can't find it.
Can anyone suggest the best way to remove a single unit from a control group?
For example, I add eggs to a control group just after I've turned them from larvae into eggs. Sometimes I accidentally include an overlord or two in the mix. Currently I have to start from scratch on that control group.
Or I have a large group of lings and I'd like to send one of them to a xel naga tower. Currently I click on ling, send it off, wait until it's far enough away not to get autoselected when I ctrl+click my ling group for re-assigning to the control group. (Or I wait too long, forget to do it, then accidentally call my scouting ling back when I move my army and I lose vision.)
Is there some nice little trick to avoid these clumsy errors?

Shift-click. That will deselect the unit you shift-clicked on.

hihi, quick question guys: at the start of the game, do you guys first produce a worker or do you split them, send them to mine and THEN produce the first worker? thx in advance.
|
Pretty sure you send them to mine and then produce the first worker. If you're below diamond, I think you can probably forget about the split as its incremental reward is fairly low.

I remember this guy did a few tests and decided that you should build worker first, then split if you are Terran or Protoss, and the opposite if you are zerg because building your worker 1 second late isn't important since it won't block your next worker.

I'm pretty sure most people do the opposite

Guess this is the best place for this: What happened to John the translator? I've just recently started watching GSL regularly again and John isn't doing the translations anymore. What happened to him>

Start worker, then send to mine. Always.

Unless you play Zerg in which case it's better to split first since worker production can overlap

Does anyone else hit keys too hard? My left hand hurts after just a few hours of play because I pound the keys so hard. At the beginning of games I can consciously try to keep a light touch... but once the game gets intense in any way, this is the last thing on my mind. I just start pounding the keys hard. Is there any way to alter this habit?
I remember having a similar problem years ago when I was in school and had to write. I would always push down extremely hard when I write. I tried to force myself to keep a light touch, but I would always revert to pressing hard once I stopped thinking about it.

What's your arm, wrist, and palm posture in relation to the keyboard?

I rest on asdf with the bottom of my palm (near the wrist) resting on the desk. This is new because I'm trying different positions to see if I can find a way to stop pounding so hard and get rid of this pain. I used to have the keyboard forward, with my palm elevated and my arm resting on the meat of my forearm. I have also tried playing with and without a wrist rest.
I don't think it's so much a contortion/positioning problem as much as the fact that I just hit the keys really hard and it rattles my joints and bones. I don't know how to break the habit.

Try getting a good wrist rest (I've linked the one I use below). Elevating your palm will definitely reduce the stress on your wrist and affect the way you type.

That is the exact wrist rest I have. Unfortunately, I still get pain from hitting keys so hard, no matter what positions I've tried.

Wait seriously? I looked at some higher level replays and I thought for sure it was mine and then start worker.

If you remove the space required to give your fingers the force to hit so hard you might see improvement. Either try to keep your palms flat on the keyboard or raise your wrist/wrist rest more. The higher the less wind-up your fingers have to smash.

I'll experiment with that. Thanks.

Yeah, shift-click. I hope you haven't suffered long without it, because it is absolutely essential. So for your last example, send all your lings to the xel naga tower, hold shift, and click one of the lings in the portraits. Now re-bind (ctrl-3 for example). Every unit you had before will be in the group except the ling you shift-clicked out.
Also, this is in addition to what you want, but you can also ctrl-shift click a unit portrait to remove all units of that type. So if you have lings and banes in a ctrl group, ctrl-shift click a bane portrait, and you will be left with just lings.
Edit: You might want to check out the "1000 tips" thread. If you didn't know about shift-click, there is probably a lot more stuff in there that you will find useful.
