Hey guys,
I have a general question that has to do with APM. I type fairly fast, faster than most people I know. The problem is I taught myself to type. My typing motion is horrible, I use 2/3 fingers for just about everything. I've noticed when I play Starcraft that I move my index finger all the way over to press the S button. This seems like an insanely bad habit and that it will severely handicap my ability to improve. My index and middle finger are very strong and quick, but the others suffer. My Question:
Do you think I am just over-reacting, and that this will not affect my growth as much as I'm scared it will? Or do you think I should take classes to learn how to type legitimately before I continue to try and improve in Starcraft? Thanks!

I think that you should try to use all four of your fingers when using the keyboard for hitting hotkeys. There will be times when you will need to reach as far as "t" then quickly hit "s" (stim kiting comes to mind) or hit "b" then quickly hit "1" (like if you're making a broverlord or a barracks or a broid ray or something, then suddenly need to micro your army), or when you will need to quickly in succession hit "z" then hit "6" (so you can make a bunch of zerglings and also jump to your queen so you can inject) etc etc.
You don't need typing classes for this. Play a game against an AI and consciously hit every hotkey using your fingers, pinkeys, etc. Rest your pinky, ring, middle, and index finger on ASDF and only lift a finger off the key to hit another key-- which means you can't hit S with your index finger, since you can't move your ring finger which is already there.
Start off very, very slow-- it's more important that you do it right than that you do it fast. After about an hour of continuous practice, you'll be used to it. You may not be able to type, but you should know your hotkeys. Play slow games against weak AIs and tech to every unit and practice microing and using its abilities and making units and buildings using hotkeys.

When do I add my gateways/robo's after a forge fast expand? Or just after an expansion in general?
I always seem to float 1-2k minerals before and even after the warpgate finishes even with warping in perfectly

Thanks very much I guess I'll get off these amazing forums and go practice.

Visibility of Force Fields depends on your Shader settings. On low they are barely visible, from medium and up they are fine.
On streams you will see many users use low shader settings though, so I don't know.

If you want just one safe build to practice for all your match-ups, I've been having good results with 3-gate expo in platinum. You have enough unit production to defend most early pressure and even push out onto the map. If they're doing something greedy you can really punish them. The trade off for safety is that you might find yourself a bit behind in econ or tech, but in platinum or below being diligent about your macro will outweight the small disadvantages of the build. If on the other hand you're in diamond or higher then I don't know why you would be asking this question.

What's the correct response in PvP to a 2 gate zealot attack? Not proxy-ed but just 2 gates built in base before cyber? Can you go gate-cyber-gate or do you need to go gate-gate-cyber, or does it depend on the rush distance? Also how many zealots would you want to build/where do your chronos go?
Are you ahead or behind if he runs 2 zealots into your minerals line and kills 3-4 probes, losing the zealots?

Match his gateway count; you will have the defender's advantage and take no damage.

He practices a lot and is a generally smart person. I'm not sure how to else one could possibly answer this, it's not like he takes some drug that makes him good or there is some hotkey trick that makes him magically win 3 GSLs.

I'm a low level protoss, and I'm really just beginning to play, but I feel like (and I may be wrong) the best way to start is to learn 1 build and just do it well. Should I just choose one build for all 3 match ups, or 3, one for each? If just one, is there one popular build which works reasonably well against all races?

What's better for overpool. Pool -> overlord, or overlord -> pool?

A popular build is the 4 Gate, but it won't help you learn. You should generally look for expand style openings http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Protoss_Strategy#Match-ups

That article is incorrect, that's not an overpool.
Edited the page to be correct, but it should be merged/deleted because there is a separate, more detailed page for 11p18h.

This is a little vague: I know Liquipedia is not completely up to date, but is it still a good place to go for SC2 info/builds?
|
Yes. A lot of people work extremely hard to add new builds and information. If you look long enough you can find a tremendous amount of information!

It's... not as refined as it should be. It lacks standard play, and every slightly good article still has holes and incompletion, at least that I've seen. I know it's a terrible excuse, but I just don't feel like I'm good enough to edit/make pages about standard play, so I'm just waiting for other people to do it before I'd refer them to there.
edit: Upon second glance, things have gotten better since I last looked. I still stand by what I said about it just feeling incomplete, but as far as a basic guideline for matchups then it is as good a source as any.

What mouse does July Zerg use?

On August 13 2011 12:51 Haustka wrote: What mouse does July Zerg use? Didn't you open a thread for this? And I have to say that it really doesn't matter, July probably uses the mouse he uses just because that's what his team/sponsor gave him. We're gonna have to have a discussion about what it takes to be good if you think equipment matters that much...
