hi everyone.

im a 2600 diamond player in dire need of help.

today i was matched up against a terran 3 times, nothing bad about it but they all used the same tactic wich is 1 base pure marine tank push into kill or contain and expand freely.
and i have noooo idea what to do against it cause his army will win in a straight fight but as soon as he contains me i cant do anything anymore.

in the replay i opend up 3gate robo for fast obs, he comes up with his force contains me and i kinda freak out and get dts but not able to break the contain, and lose the game.

any help is much appreciated.

replay at the bottom of the post:D

thx in advance

I can't watch your replay because I'm at work, but I'm surprized DT's didnt do it... How about Phoenixes to lift his tank line? And then attack his marines with the Gateway units.

Hmm, there is a game that comes to mind here, I believe it was rain or jinro vs oGsMC in the GSL 3 on Xel'Naga Caverns.

It is a very strong push, especially if you've expanded. MC's solution was to hit the front with a standard zealot/stalker composition, however his flare here was to load up 2 immortals and drop them behind the bunker line, where the tanks were (and where they will most likely be in any bunker push) The immortals made quick work of the few tanks, and the zealot/stalker in the front coupled with the 2 immortals in back were used to clear the bunkers. At that point I think the terran player gg'd out.

If I remember correctly after dropping the immortals he set-up the prism to warp in additional units in behind.

If this sounds a bit too complicated for you, just consider trying to break the front with zlot/immortal/stalker/sentry. Lead with zealot/immortal and make sure to have a guardian shield up to minimize marine damage.

Edit: the above poster has a good idea also, a quick few phoenix (with new lowered build time !) with a flood of zealots and maybe an immortal to bust the bunkers (if you've already got a robo) would work great.
There is no shame in defeat, so long as the spirit remains unconquored

Early harass in the form of three-gate (expand if far positions) will allow you to put on pressure in the early game, and maybe punish him for teching. You'll want to try to get Colossi with range ASAP vs that comp, if you throw down a fast robo after your second nexus and then start the bay when you can, you should have 1-2 Colossi and range when he pushes, (but without range colos are useless vs tanks situation). An gas steal may also discourage him from going too tank-heavy from the get-go.

Try to catch him as he moves out with his tanks, and if that isn't possible you have to be extremely clever about how you engage.

I'll watch the replay later.
good luck have batman

Genius used a two Immortal drop in the back of the tanks, so they have free hits on them and the marines cannot micro well. Meanwhile, he warpedd zealots in the face of the marines, protected by stalkers. NsPGenius vs ST_Rainbow, GSL January, I think it was the first match, so you can watch it.
Q. You've been criticized for using cheesy builds in the past, but now people are saying that you've played some good games today. A. I'm glad that they think that way, but that won't stop me from using cheesy builds.(oGsHyperdub)

As mentioned previously, several GSL protoss players have started using immortal drops to attack this push from the front and the back. Attacking in this way stops the marines from acting as a meatshield for the tanks as the tanks will be attacked from one side regardless of where the marines are (and the tanks NEED to die quickly once you engage). I've tried it twice since seeing Genius do it (every other time I've been playing against this build I've been going stargate) and it worked ok-ish, but it worked out as a fairly even trade, which I guess is better than losing your whole frikkin base.

Streaming a HardCorey QuestionTime on this thread's replay/questions at 8pm Eastern in 15 minutes:
http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/HardCorey

Will edit add in comments at VOD.

Edit:

Video: HardCorey QuestionTime #17: Dealing with Marine/Tank push into contain.

Other Comments: I thought you had a good idea of what to do but needed to just work on CBoosting a bit more and using the information from scouting more effectively. Essentially use that observer to scout his producing capabilities.

Hope this helps

I faced something like this and dealt with it by warp prisming his base to slow him down while i built up some stuff (zealot stalker immortal mostly?) to bust down his tank/bunker/turret contain.

important: if you expand and he does this kind of push, let your expansion die. no way you are going to hold it off.

i know this is pretty fucking stupid but the best way to deal with 1 base all ins is to stay 1 base yourself.

stay inside your base and stay out of the tank range and try to get a colossus (if you can't have it 30 seconds or so after his push comes you're probably dead because he will just slowly crawl forward and kill your shit).
also you should have as many zealots and force fields as you can and when you are ready and try to break the contain send an immortal first to soak up tank hits. it's going to die pretty quickly to marine fire but just eating a few tank hits it's already done its job.

if you break his contain without losing too much stuff you can just go and kill him.
but whatever you do: don't sit back and let his expo kick in because then you will lose.

Pretty late on that warpgate tech dude! JUST from seeing his barracks placement so as not to allow a tech lab, I would've chrono'd 2 stalkers and ran straight in with my first stalker and netted myself 2 marine kills as that bunker was late to get up, and free scouting. Moving on:

1) Siege tank seen: 7:36. Robo idle: 7:15 until 9:25! Woah there! You drop a whole 3-4 warpgate cycles worth of units out, and fail to produce one of the biggest tank-killers (if not the-biggest) out there! Heck, you even make the nexus while the robo stands idle! Get immortals. Don't sit on your thumbs for 2 full minutes knowing what his tech is and failing to react to it. I would even say if you're gonna do nothing to react to scouting information, then skip the observer because it is useless to you. It's that important within the context of expanding against a 1basing player.

2) It takes 29 shots for a marine to kill a zealot. It takes 47 shots to do the same when the zealot is under the effects of guardian shield. Your macro is off with gateways standing idle; that's the biggest impediment to having enough zealots to deal with the marines out there. The second biggest is toggling that guardian shield on a couple sentries and keeping them in range of the zealots. Of course, if you failed to build the immortals to have 4 dead tanks while this is all going on, you're screwed ... just like any Protoss is that scouts and doesn't react in a number of Terran strategies.

3) Lategame my smile grins wide when I have High Templars Chargelots and Immortals against this mix. You feel like a million bucks, let me tell you. Drops fall flat, but your drops kill so many.

Being an expo up doesn't give you the luxury of extra time to react. Your response should be as immediate as you can make it with the very tailored strategies that are out there. I know you eventuallllllly get around to immortals, with a dead natural though. Much better to chop that initial push down with primariliy guardian shield zealots and immortals. Don't forget to FF behind the players that like to kite their marines back behind the tanks to avoid the zealots!
Great armies come from happy zealots, and happy zealots come from California!
