cliffs just blend in with everything else


I've had that randomly happen to me too. It is one of the options in the editor to turn it on/off.

Try "View -> Show Terrain -> Show Hidden Terrain Cells"

I went to do that, and I already had it checked. When I unchecked it, it all turned to look like this:

@ leprechaun - that looks like a belshir tileset, but on the HOTS editor. Make sure you're using the "ZZZ Outdated" cliffs if you're going to try to use WOL cliffs in the HOTS editor. If you just use the normal named ones (for instance, "Bel'Shir Organic Cliffs") without the ZZZ Outdated prefix, then they will look like what you screenshotted.

i have a problem.
every time i try to login into the editor i get a message:

This battle.net account has no sc2 character, pls login into the game and create one.

the funny part is i can log into the game just normaly...anyone got an idea?

What region(s) are you logging into? You need to create a new character for each region. If your editor is set to log into KR, for example, but you only have a battle.net character for EU, then you'll get that message.

In preferences somewhere you can set the region your editor is supposed to log in to, change that to the appropriate one, you are most likely logging into a region where you have no character, sometimes the editor moves to a bizarre region after a patch.

Where do you guys test your maps? I feel like to make sure a map is balanced it requires alot of testing, yet I find it hard finding enough good players to test the map, that are also willing to give detailed feedback. How come there are no custom map community tournaments? I think that would be a great idea for the release of Hots...

Us at Galaxy eSports personally have a partnership with iMpulse eSports (Masters/GM level semi-pro team), but it will vary from mapmaking team to mapmaking team. Individual mapmakers tend to rely on their friends and/or acquaintances.

There used to be a Map of the Month tournament organized here on Team Liquid, but that has been defunct for some time.

Not that I know of, but check out MacroMicro, its a similar concept.

I think there would be some issues with what you are describing as you cannot control other player's units

Not sure if this is wholly the right place to ask, but..

I tried following http://starcraft-2-galaxy-editor-tutorials.thehelper.net/tutorials.php?view=169303 this tutorial to try and make a custom ability, but I've run into a block. I can't seem to be able to set my ability's "default button" field to a custom button I made. All that's visible to choose from are all the campaign and MP buttons: I can't find my custom button.

Edit: looks like I can't find my custom ability when I try to add to it the list of "carrier" abilities. Perhaps the abilities I made are broken atm and thus the editor isn't showing them, or there's something about them not being part of campaign dependencies?

Question: HotS beta is ending soon, what happens to any maps we've been working on? Should we backup our map files somewhere? Anyone know if we'll be able to use those map files after release?

edit - nvm, looks like the files are normal .sc2map files. Shouldn't be an issue if they're saved somewhere

Is there a good build order tester that lets you save the build you are practice? Is there one, where you can download buildorder instructions from a website and import them into the build order tester?

I don't know how, but after some repeated careful trials, I got past the problem. Still, it felt like sometimes, an abilty/etc. I made would show up, and sometimes it wouldn't. Couldn't pin down the reason or mistake. Thanks for your suggestion.

Couple quick ones...was gonna make a thread, good thing I looked for a Q/A first. I'm sure they've been answered before, but there are way too many pages to comb through.

Why so many 2 player maps over 3/4? (forced cross spawns don't count)
-surely they can be balanced well enough?

Why 'cookie cutter' layouts? (I'm not really sure if this one's true..I'm not good enough to know what layouts are what.)
-why do we build the maps around us instead of adapting? surely there are more variations that can be relatively balanced?

Why won't tournaments introduce new ones more often?
-sure it may make it harder on the players due to more/different maps...but adaptation is a very strong skill to have.

Why so many 2 player maps over 3/4?


They are easier to balance and easier to make. 4 player maps in SC2 have almost always had some positional imbalance or other balance issue. Some people feel that random spawns do not belong in competitive RTS and are against randomness. There are also much much fewer workable layouts for 4 spawn maps that are accepted, although I believe there should be more work done with 4 spawn maps. 3 spawn maps are just a pain in the ass to get exactly right.

Why 'cookie cutter' layouts?


It is very easy in SC2 (WoL, at least) to make a map imbalanced by deviating from the acceptable standard. Also we as a community tend to judge oddities harshly since we have seen how many times these kinds of things have failed in the past. I also feel that the WoL mapping scene got stale in the same way the WoL metagame got stale; certain things don't work so we stick to what does.

Why won't tournaments introduce new ones more often?


It is a much safer choice to go with the tried and true. There have been some incidents with community made maps. Players supposedly do not want to have to learn new maps all the time. People complain when they don't like new maps. Tournament organizers do not truly understand how maps affect the game.

Those are my opinions, you are hitting on some sore subjects so I'm sure others will disagree with me. We need more people who are willing to be creative, but those people need to also be dedicated and learn how to make a decent map before they can really start to experiment. Many talented people do not map anymore because they feel there is no reward/ no real chance of the maps being used.

Thanks for your answers.

I guess I do notice far more creativity in the 2 player maps, never thought of it that way. For some reason the random spawns leading to variable games seems more interesting in my head...but maybe it just doesn't work out on paper. I can see why it would feel worse to other players and map-makers.

If someone doesn't mind could you list a few features in maps that have failed in the past (and why), or specific occasions where they led to bad results? (other than the obvious rock back door or cliffs)
I can't really think of any huge problems or any large complaints about maps being imba off the top of my head. Though I don't really look for it I guess.

Now that I think about it, wasn't ohana/antiga/entombed and others eventually deemed to be not so great? what made these stay in rotation for so long?

I guess I've also just kinda assumed kespa could smack new maps in because of the format of their league, they don't have to be completely balanced. Is this a fair assumption? or are they just ballsy enough to tell the players to adapt and deal with it, while making changes to improve the map over time.

Thanks in advance! I really hope the map scene somehow eventually blows up...there's nothing better than playing on an awesome new map.
