I used to play a bit more, but just kind of felt the game is asocial. The team play isn't very fun. LOTV fixed a lot with protoss so its actually not too bad to play all 3 races now. The map pool made it so that very few builds seemed to work killing the diversity, and one race tended to have a significant advantage so kind of lost interest in multiplayer. Its kind of like overwatch where its fun when you start, but then you realize that no one wants to play the 4 core heroes that is best so you get stuck doing lucio and reinhart over and over if you want to win.

Co-op is very buggy and my teammate is more likely to attack me than finish a game or people don't do things that they need to to win and you cannot solo carry in mutations very easily. Despite having new units to micro and its fun to micro them, they tend to not be very useful for mutations. Its kind of like heroes where the things that are mechanically interesting are bogged down by the slow pace and stupid mechanics of fighting map vision more than anything.

I watch more than I play for sure. Probably 2 games every 2-3 days on average. I watch 1-2 hours per day however.

Stopped playing regularly towards the end of WoL and stopped playing altogether during HotS. Never bought LotV. Not a fan of the endless push toward faster pacing and mobility over map and space control. Also hated how garbage the campaign was, both in terms of missions and writing.

Out of curiosity, what are the 15% of people who answered "Never" on the poll doing when they visit TL? Are they here for spectating, or mafia, or what?

Lots of people watch, but don't play sc2.
Same for me, tournaments can be very entertaining, especially team fights like PL. Playing however is to intense...

HotS campaign was really dull. LotV though was fantastic, and much more polished!
On topic, due to circumstances I only play a session every two weeks. If I could choose, I'd play every second day...

I agree it's amazing, but what sucks is not playing for a week due to whatever circumstances come up and then wham, I'm back to forgetting to build a supply depot or I autopilot into a build that's two patches outdated. So frustrating (at least for me) :\

Its never for me too. I played broodwar daily from 1998 to 2004 and played frequently up to 2008. But these days i am not playing anymore. And sc2 is not my taste.

Used to play a lot of 1v1 in WoL and the first 6 months of HotS. Nowadays we usually sit down once or twice a week with my brother and some friends on teamspeak and play about 5-10 team games per evening while drinking beer and stuff. Good times.

with a period of 4-5 months, I try to play the game. Couple of matches later I get frustrated and quit again. Didn't buy lotv because it made an already too fast and frantic game worse.

Streams are fun though. Interesting games + an interesting streamer makes watching worthwhile. Tournaments are boring because most of the prominent players quit the game, or play rarely. Fun casters like Day9 quit too.

I miss the Wol era and the beginning of Hots, until the broodlord+infestor period.

What was wrong with wol that they changed it this much?

i wont play more sc2 but when i play starcraft (bw) I play a bit every day usually stop for some months and come back.. I think its weird how some people got used of calling sc2 just "starcraft" feels like pretending the original doesnt exist anymore or that it is similar. But maybe warcraft3 players call it just warcraft i duno. I heard "TFT" a lot back in the day. Whatever, I play Starcraft not Starcraft2, and with the BW expansion pack daily when im active and never will play starcraft 2 again or maybe at some lan if someone challenges me oh wait there is no lan mode^^j/k

Every few months, I'll be interested in playing a few games with friends and whatnot, but I honestly don't have the time to spend in grinding a lot of games, and I play to be with some of my friends. Going to events, however, is a different story; I try my best to make it to as many SC2 events as I can because I've made many friends, and find the community aspect incredibly rewarding and I've made some good friends through SC2, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon :D!

My passion for StarCraft completely died when Legacy of the Void came out. I never really play, though I would play BW if i had good ping.

Legacy of the Void left me completely dissatisfied, I didn't even bother purchasing the expansion, after beta. I don't even watch StarCraft 2 anymore either, though I do like to read on events once in a while.

EDIT: I do occasionally watch Brood War Streams.

What game are you watching? LotV is the most micro/aggression focused version of SC2 we've ever had.

I've recently been doing Wings of Liberty ladder, and it made me realise how much more fun the game used to be back then, even despite the dreaded zerg dominance era that came as a result of the Patch 1.4.3 Balance Update, that increased Queen range hard enough for Zerg to be able to defend virtually any early game aggressive build with just Queens.

In fact, with a few balance changes and redesigns of depreciated units like the Raven, the Reaper, and a small buff to Terran Mech against Protoss, Wings of Liberty could have been the successor to Brood War.

Why? Because back in the days of Wings of Liberty, we didn't have to worry about frustrating units and game mechanics like:
  • Stimivacs - Seriously, Medivac boost is one of the most overpowered and broken things in the entire game, and this is coming from someone that mained Terran at the end of WoL and during much of HotS. It is the sole reason why Blink Stalkers seem to be the only viable way to defend in the current meta. Terran drops back in WoL were the perfect mix of defendable and decisive enough to win the game, and relied on the element of surprise to land, so why do they need such an absurd buff to the point that you can just boost, skip all your opponent's static defences, land a doom drop, and win the entire game.
  • Regenerating Mutalisks - This is one of the major things that led to the ling bling muta ultra vs MMMM TvZ meta of HotS.
  • Widow Mines - There are so many problems with this unit in comparison to the Spider Mines of Brood War. For one, it overly punishes players for not having detection out, and it's a unit with such powerful burst damage that it ended up invalidating the Siege Tank in almost all matchups outside of TvT until LotV.
  • Tankivac drops - Before Legacy of the Void, Terran vs Terran used to be like chess in that games were generally, long, drawn-out, and involved decisive plays. Now, the idea of leapfrogging tanks and deciding whether to try to catch your enemy by surprise by sieging in between their firing and vision range is invalidated by 'lololol siege drops' because the Siege Tank takes less time to fire after it's been dropped in Siege Mode in comparison to it unsieging and resieging.
  • Adepts - Adepts are another unit that is absurdly broken in the early game and is then relegated to near uselessness in the late game.
  • Ravagers - Ravagers and their Corrosive Bile ability are the single reason why Forge Fast Expand is no longer a viable PvZ build in Legacy of the Void. If you go FFE nowadays, it results in an almost instantaneous build order loss, as your opponent lands a few Corrosive Biles and snipes your pylons, thus de-powering your defences and losing you the game.
  • How Blizzard would screw us with the tournament map pool - That's right, back then, individual TOs and the community decided on maps. Today's tournament maps are overwhelmingly Blizzard creations and they mostly suck.
  • Vipers - Vipers would be a pretty acceptable unit if they didn't have Blinding Cloud, which is an ability I detest for various reasons.
  • Mining changes - Rather than implement the Brood War mining system that Starbow had, Blizzard instead decided to accelerate expansions by starting players off with a stronger economy, and by cutting 25% of the minerals from each base, so players mine out sooner. This has only crippled defensive play and turtling to the point where defensive builds gimp you economically.
  • The Marauder and Ultralisk changes - Ultralisks become much tankier due to unnecessary armour buffs to the point where unless you have loads of Widow Mines and Liberators to DPS them down, you suffer a build order loss against them. Marauders on the other hand had their attack split into half meaning that they deal about 50% less damage to Ultralisks, and are now useless against them.
  • Swarm Hosts - They used to be absurdly OP, as in 18 of them used to be able to hold back a 140 supply Protoss deathball. Now? They're unviable in the meta, but still a massive pain to defend against once they're out.

I just hate Legacy of the Void. Wings, hell, even HotS was much better.

I don't like the game anymore. I still play 4v4's once in a blue moon with friends but I don't care about it anymore and I won't unless they go back to something more simplistic and elegant, like WoL was. I hate the twelve worker start. I hate all the increased micro. I dislike the new units, both in concept, and in gameplay. Sorry, but we can have a million people show up and talk about how great it is, but I needed to let this out.

Loved watching and playing BW

Played a shitload of WoL

Played a pretty decent amount of HotS

Played 4-5 LotV matches online.

Thought WoL was fun, but didnt really agree with the changes from BW to WoL. (Banelings are stupid, horribly designed units. If Z only counter to Terrans cheapest units, are ones that die even if they win the fight... i dont understand why this is acceptable).

Then came widow mines... not going to even comment on how horrible these units are.

Add in Protoss' Sentries, and it gets even more frustrating.

Blizzard doesnt understand what makes the RTS genre worth playing/watching

Its not explosions.

Its not max supply armies crashing into eachother for 1 fight and then a game over.

All Blizzard has been doing in an attempt to be popular, is trying to speed up the game, and get players to max armies as fast as possible... thats not what RTS or Strategy games are about.

We want to see/experience slow, steady, well thought out/well executed play.

By eliminating/speeding up the early game, they got rid of HALF of the variance of the game.

Dont agree with the extra workers at start. Never agreed with the multiple vespene geysers.... never agreed with the game becoming "race to 200/200 and fight and gg"

Speak for yourself. You have a nostalgia boner and that's totally fine. The mechanics of Broodwar were necessitated because of the technology available at the time. Just because that is what it was then doesn't mean that's the way it has to be now when the tools we have at our disposal give us so much more we can do.

Is SC2 faster paced than BW? Yes! But I would expect it to be now that we don't have the kind of limiting factors that shaped BW into what it was, like unit select size and complexity of the engine.

Never agreed with multiple vespene geysers? That's almost pre-BW talk even. That's really old school. I can understand and appreciate your opinion, but it's an old and outdated one that refuses to acknowledge that we can do better than we did, and just says that we have to do things the way they were done "in my day" because "That's what I'm used to and I refuse to accept that change can be good".

If I'm wrong please let me know. I'd love to have a discussion on this issue because though I played SC1 and BW from the time they released I see SC2 as an all around improvement on everything BW tried to be but fell short of.

Except BW is rising in popularity, while SC2 has been declining since WoL. Look at stream numbers literally on TL at this very second... BW top 2 streamers have combined 5700 viewers. Top 2 of SC2 have 1600.

Comparing one of the most long-lasting and most successful RTS of all times in terms of playerbase and popularity, to its successor which hasnt managed to stay relevant over a period of half the length.

So obviously a majority of people who enjoy the RTS genre disagree with you.

I wouldnt even agree that SC2 is faster paced than BW... it just skips the early and mid game, and rushes everyone to the late game, in every single match, removing a lot of depth of the game.

Whereas BW had a lot more time for an early and mid-game to develop.

Saying BW was limited by the tech of the time, and those things held it back..when they didnt, even if only accidentally, they actually improved the game.

I wont argue with you that BW accidentally stumbled on a more balanced, and better designed game, even if those choices were forced on them by tech limitations.

But there is no point in hopping in this thread to argue with you about why BW is superior, and even though Blizzard worked so hrd to squash it to make room for SC2, it is looking more and more likely that BW is going to outlast SC2 as a competitive title.

I am done trying to salvage SC2 into a game I want to play/enjoy. Because too many cling to the "Its so much better now! You just have rose tinted glasses!" Enjoy your dead game then, and keep refusing to acknowledge there are things you could have learned from your previous title, and implemented in order to have increased your games' success

And I wont even bother getting into BW vs Sc2 when it comes to user generated content, accessibility, and the fact that BW despite being 10+ years older, had a better implemented system to allow user generated content to become popular, and add longevity to the UMS scene of their game. Bnet 2.0 has been a joke since its implementation.

BW didn't stumble entirely upon the balance you see today. There were many balance changes in the early patches. The difference is that they stopped changing the game and let it evolve organically after that, despite whatever race was dominating the Korean proscene at the time or how loudly noobs cried on forums for x nerf and y buff.

Daily. Used to be 5 or 6 1v1s in WoL and HotS. Now between 1 and 3. That about equals an hour per day. Don't enjoy LotV quite as much.

I kinda have to set time certain times of the week to keep going. Starcraft isn't the game I can like, come home from work and just ladder, its kinda like a special set of hours I have to cram, since I can't stand it when I have fear/pressures from work affecting my gameplay and performance.

Even though I marked never on when I play StarCraft (nowadays, at least), SC2 is the only esport I watch.

Haven't played since BL Infestors days, bought HoTS for story, didn't buy LotV. I watch a few tournaments a year when I come accros them. But I got very attached to TeamLiquid, might be the last decent forum out there, so I kinda follow the scene from that and reddit.

I still can't believe I have over 10 000 messages posted over the 3 or so years I was hardcore into this game. Seems crazy.

I'm in the same boat. Wings was fun, HotS played through the story but multiplayer felt burnt-out and didn't even buy LotV, just watched cinematics on youtube..
But I still really enjoyed watching Dreamhack and seeing Taeja win. Also watch those "top 10 games of the year" comps that you guys make for the site.
As far as watching and playing goes I switched over to Dota2 as soon as it hit the buy-in during closed beta. Best 20$ I ever spent.

I used to play a ton of 2v2. Some time during HOTS, Dota2 took over almost completely and I pretty much stopped playing SC2. I bought LOTV out of love for the game and in hopes that it would rekindle my motivation. It didn't and after playing 3 missions of the single player campaign, I never touched it again. Until the other day, when I played a few games of archon mode with my old 2v2 partner. It was ok, but Dota is just much more relaxed.

I used to play a lot. Since dabbling with LotV a week after release I haven't played a single game. I feel the game is completely stale and many of the balance changes were reactionary alterations that ultimately ensured the game (read: each race) is only played effectively in one or two styles. For example, when I was last playing Terran was primarily bio all game, every game, and every match up.

Things may be different now but years of stagnant gameplay at pro and amateur levels killed my desire to play.

Speaking just for me, I haven't played online SC for years, I only go through the single player content once nowadays. But I do follow the pro scene fairly closely, so that's why I come here mostly. I also visit the hots forums and articles, as they are, because I do play that with friends.

I only play arcade now. Mostly Desert Strike Legacy, but I never play with the developer atrix that put cheats into his map specifically for 4 accounts(including his own) to have extra minerals, booms, etc., or just to flat out win the game with a single command.

I also play The Thing -Arctic- and some Phantom .

I miss BW's Mafia Beta

my passion died around the end of hots. i mean blizzard changed the WCS 3 years in a row and i was done caring. i use to watch so much of the korean scene and all the weekend tourneys. but i guess blizzard tried to do a riot play but just sorta took all the fun away. not enough events in NA, not enough korean SC and just not enough clear direction. then lotv took away the early game. ive been uninterested since.

Haven't touched starcraft in almost 6 month now. Was a huge nerd 5-6 years ago, followed the esports scene very closely. Played the most in 2011, then i found broodwar and got to enjoy the last proleague/starleague.

Tried to like Legacy/played a lot at some point, well archon mode and co op but didn´t keep me interested for long.
I fully stopped watching sc2 on twitch (other then gsl final). I plan to watch all the asl broodwar league stuff, really enjoyed Sundays games.

I stopped with LotV. I played one Mafia game. My reason to come here is the long term high quality that tl.net overall delivers. Also, I try to keep up with the scene since before the Koreans got locked out, I felt that with KR practice partners on EU, foreigners had a basis to grow skillwise. I was hoping for a joint koreigner scene and still expect Blizzard to finally change the system.

Foreign competitive events feel empty as they do not deliver top competition. But I like players such as Harstem and Snute. So I don't want to leave this site.

Oh and I am still waiting for that global event wcs thingy.

Summary: LotV is a bad game and Blizzard is artificially keeping it alive. I want WoL or HotS back. Both had their flaws, but both were way more fun to play.

Edit:

I've read a lot of comments by now. Maybe it's just nostalgia that makes me blame the game and Blizzard. I mean, I still play CS:GO - a lot. I play Dead By Daylight, sometimes we even get out AoE 2 and have a game or two. I don't think my missing passion is related to nostalgia, after re-thinking it. Maybe it is because "I am used to something. Now it is changed. Adapt to the change." At least I identified that as the reason for me to quit Heroes.

I come for occasional Broodwar streams and to check on the Street Fighter and Path of Exile threads. Those games are what I play now but I got (back in SF's case) in to them here on TL.

Haven't watched or played StarCraft2 since shortly after Heart of the swarm release. I didn't really like Wings of liberty but I stuck with it and played online a fair amount because Blizzard expansions had always made games better for me in the past. Also watched to follow the pros I had become fans of in Broodwar. Hots felt like more of the same and pros I liked were falling off so I was done. Haven't seen a single minute of lotv, just reading about it told me I would hate it.

Even back in like 2006 or whatever before sc2 was even announced as alpha a lot of people didnt even play BW but still came to the site for the community, the news, replays, liquibet, and because they were fans of players or teams etc.

Now the site has multiple games, and is completely different than how it was back then, so obviously more people come here for more reasons.

Me personally for example, used to play a ton of BW and SC2, rarely watched anything to do with progaming or payed attention to that news. It's the same for phsyical sports too, I'd much rather play than watch other people play. So I came here for the community and sharing of information about playing the game (new maps, strats, glitches, etc).

I rarely play any SC anymore, where I used to put in like 400 games a month at my peak. And ever since the site changed for SC2 and all these other new games (as well as simply getting older and taking careers) the community sort of disappeared, at least for the veterans anyway. So I occasionally pop into the site just to see what's goin on.

legacy of the void isn't a very good game. if you didn't play the previous expansions at a masters level it's downright unplayable. i understand they wanted to speed up the game to make it more entertaining to watch. unfortunately making the game marginally better to watch has made it unplayable for 90% of the playerbase. i still enjoy the rts genre and try catching big matchups when they happen, however, it's really hard to make an effort to watch a game that you don't even have the ability to play as designed.
the day i joined tl i hit plat ones for the first time.

I play daily for a month or so, then I get fed up and quit for a few months, then get inspired and come back. I started playing again recently to try out the balance test map. I'm still around the same MMR on ladder, even though I stopped playing for months. I see the same old faces still playing at 4am on EU ladder. I still regularly watch proleague and GSL when I'm not actively playing sc2 myself. never miss a GuMiho or INno game.

Have not played a game in two years. I do still keep up on the tournament scene though. even though the passion is more or less gone.
We promise with a view to hope, but the reason to "accomplish" what we promised would be fear.

Like others, pretty much lost the passion at the end of WoL. Bought HotS, never finished the campaign, think I played maybe 1 ladder and never touched it again. Didn't even bother with LotV. Moved on to Dota from there. Not a fan of how the game progressed and felt like I lost what I loved from BW. Being a Terran player all the slow, methodical and meticulous movements for map control are gone in favor of faster pace and mobility. Just not my cup of tea, I guess. Still occasionally watch some streams, but more interested in the BW stuff now than SC2.

Im back from a hiatus that started when HotS was released.

a few weeks ago I flicked on teamliquid to see what was happening in the pro-scene and all I can say is wow.

SC2 looks better than it ever did before, yet less and less people are playing it now.

It is fast and difficult, but it always was.

Im glad I dropped the money for multiplayer LotV lastnight

will be playing and watching a ton more.... again

stopped playing because sc2 does not change very often. got boring after playing die hard for years.

I understand they want more and more data, but is it that hard to make it fair for all races with often/exciting balance changes? doesn't their team play this game to have understanding?

really wish they would change game balance often, and even add units during seasons.

I play twice per week on average. Sometimes more
90% watching it 8% talking about it and 2% playing it - sc2

Kinda stopped playing Starcraft II and have been playing Starcraft Brood War non-stop. Still follow the SCII Pro scene religiously but SC:BW is what my heart desires.

I'm getting back into it. It's just fun now. After trying so hard for years, then taking a long break (like 100games a year for 2 years) it just feels fresh, and not butthurt at all. Still the most mechanically pleasing games out there. Mobas are fun with friends but it feels bad not putting over 200 APM into the game :/

Nova Cover obs or w/e it's called was fun aswell

The game feels very lonely, so I play more team games these days like CSGO and OW. But I watch a lot of SC2 daily. I do still crank up the 1v1 ladder every month or so.

I've just recently got back into it, but my biggest problem is that I get incredibly frustrated when I lose. As others have said, I feel that LotV is just way too hard to play. I've always been around diamond/masters mmr, but I don't ever remember feeling as inept at the game as I do now; It's painfully obvious that I can't keep up with the necessary micro and macro.

Lately I've been playing a lot of LoL just because it's so much less stressful to play. It's a real shame because I prefer the 1v1 format and LoL queue times are ten times longer than LotV.

I'm a returning noob so I'm playing daily ATM the campaigns lol.

Think once I've gone as far as I can with those I'll prolly stop though as I think this game is way out of my league! Hopefully will be able to complete the hard mode achievements (don't laugh).

Shame they are stopping creating new campaigns cause I love the game but just not good enough for the 1vs1 side of things.

How often do you play Starcraft? :

Never (3822) 21%
A few times a week (3778) 21%
Daily (3019) 17%
Every few months (2397) 13%
Yearly (2313) 13%
Every couple weeks (1169) 6%
Once a week (863) 5%
Once a month (694) 4%

Top answers are unexpected on a StarCraft website..

My passion comes and goes for the game according to how my favourite players are doing.

I must say i loved the game a lot when Life was supreme king, it was very motivating seeing him play, I was making visible progress in HOTS, even got coached by some of the NA elite (it was really interesting to see how they think and approach various situations), was really invested passion wise in the game and really enjoyed playing it back then ; now the hype levels have stabilized to a lukewarm feeling, with some temporary spikes of passion when Dark, Snute, Scarlett, Nerchio are doing well, which inspires me to login and play every now and then.

Force of habit is a strong thing. I think my most active threads this year are the NBA, NFL, ABL, Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Super, Game of Thrones and Pokemon Go threads. Nothing Starcraft related and only 1 related to videogames. I don't even watch that much anymore. I just come here to check results sometimes.

I've been playing Random race only since HotS after I quit at WOL in sc2 for 3 years. Now I am just only in master league level to have pure fun with all 3 races with diverse styles such as early cheese, mid-game timing rush, and long late macro game instead of trying to understand this game more or go back to my original level as in WOL, and still I feel like I am always forced to playing on limited similar meta and maps, no matter how I want to play differently in this game. And as a random player for 2 years until now, I finished 1v1 ladder season only one time during whole 2014 HotS ~ LotV.

In Korea, it seems the biggest problem is people think sc2 is kinda too obvious game, where you have to play in limited meta, if you make even one mistake then you are in danger to lose the game, and if you lose one huge fight then you never can come back from that. But, still I love this scene and can't quit that easily, cuz I remember how I played this game a lot during WOL, so I guess I will be sticking around and watch until this scene is ended

Never, the game now more then ever hangs on a razor edge where a single mistake or micro error can cost you the game. LOTV made the game even more punishing to make comebacks on and on top of that introduced a bunch of balance changes and units that seem geared to slaughter workers in the blink of an eye. Plain and simple, it's not fun, and it's not well designed.

WOL was the best incarnation of this game, if Zerg in WOL had Lurkers the game would have been perfect, until then, David Kim ruined this game just like he ruined DOW (with 2 out of 6 races being even viable to play)

agreed 100%. I used to play Sc2 exclusively for a year or 2 when WoL came out. HotS came out and i laddered for a month or so. Ive tried LotV multiplayer a couple times, but its more so just to laugh when someone does/build something and i realize "thats actually a thing?!"

Like I got Battlecruiser rushed...but it doesnt have to fly across the map..they get warped in at my base...

Luckily I was just a lot better than my opponent from placements and managed to just continually expand and continually replenish dead drone lines while sending lings across the map to hinder him.... was halfass mining from 6-7 bases and lings were keeping him from mirroring. He would have won if he transitioned into anything besides mass BC and widow mines.. but i just massed corruptors and lings.

But when it happened i literally burst out laughing "WTF this is a thing now? Battlecruisers warping into my base?!"

And as i play i remembered why i dont play anymore... Widow mines. A unit that if u get lucky will instant win the game, and if you are unlucky will instantly lose you the game.... thats what the game needs. an invisible unit that has the ability to instantly kill all of my mutalisks/zerglings if i run over the wrong part of the map... lmao what a joke.

Husband and I try to play every night, we usually play 2v2's and then I like to ladder 1v1's. Team games are super fun, and I love ladder. Lately Ive been offracing on EU as toss so I can learn it, Im a lowly gold toss, and diamond Zerg NA.

This game is how I met my husband (at a LAN) and I will probably always be playing it. Only negative thing I can think of is I havent been able to find a good monobattles in LOTV, theres was a great day9 one in HOTS...

Also love to watch streams/Vods/tournys!

it's been years since i played sc2.. (almost) never watch it anymore either... and when i did watch it the other day i was honestly pretty bored with the deathball style of play

then again i got married and had a kid so~

luckily there's a huge brood war revival going on right now with english casting, so i watch that pretty regularly!

I felt that spending another $50 CAD on LotV was too much, and now I lost interest in the game altogether.

I never cared about the campaign, they should have made a $10 version to access ladder. But now meh.

Longest poll in TL history?

I rarely ever play SC anymore. RIP BW and SC2 for me. Too much of a time sink as we get older with more IRL responsibilities and less dexterous.
