On October 15th and 16th, Washington D.C. will be host to MLG's second Pro Circuit event. MLG DC does not offer easy money, but rather a big-name player list and a shot at making it big. This tournament has the biggest concentration of quality players ever for Starcraft 2 event in North America. Prestige is attained by defeating the toughest competition, and this weekend there will be a lot to win in terms of prestige.

Grand Finals

In a few days, players from North America, Europe, and Korea will land in Washington D.C. carrying their hopes and egos as well as their keyboards and mice. With so many world-class players in contention, we could be seeing some killer match ups and awe-inspiring moments as early as Round 2. We are guaranteed one hell of a show.

The defending champ.

The MLG Raleigh champion and TLAF-Liquid member (Wiki)Huk will look to defend his title, but against the toughest competition outside Korea, he will be challenged. However, his toughest competition comes from Korea, as (Wiki)Idra will make the trip, fresh off his qualification for the GSL Season 2. HuK's team members and Brood War phenoms (Wiki)Ret and (Wiki)Tyler will join him at DC as well. Special attention should also be given to rising stars like TL Open #1 and #2 winner (Wiki)SeleCT, IEM Runner-up and MLG Quarter Finalist (Wiki)Qxc, and MLG Raleigh Runner-up (Wiki)KiwiKaki. GSL Season 1 qualifier (Wiki)Torch and Brood War legend (Wiki)White-Ra will also attend, though the Ukranian power-house is said to have been a bit low on practice time since his wedding.

MLG DC: The Contenders
By Hot_Bid

Here is my list of the top contenders for the MLG DC title. They are in descending order of who I believe to be most likely to win the tournament. I have also included some personalized (and potentially fictitious) letters from their fans.

7. Honeymooners and New Faces

Why is White-Ra so low on this list? He just got married! Though he was strong during the beta, White-Ra's PvT has been suspect of late. Many fans wonder if he even has time to practice, and the doubters would not be surprised at all if White-Ra was knocked into the loser bracket early on. But until we actually see him play, he remains a legitimate threat.

Ajtls is known for many things on TL, but only after MLG Raleigh could he legitimately add "Top LAN finisher to his list of career achievements. Was Raleigh a fluke, or will we see "Lastshadow" in the Top 4 again? His TvT was certainly solid, taking out several big names, but bad losses to Socke and Kiwi might doom Ajtls if he faces a P early.
Dear White-Ra,

Will you name your first child Fenix or Zeratul? Inquiring minds wish to know.

Regards,
Ukrainian Fans

6a. Evil Henchmen

EG's biggest threat to win flies in from Korea, but Incontrol, Machine, Lzgamer and Inka hope to make it far as well. At MLG Raleigh, EG vs EG happened in the first round in what could only be a bracket error. Incontrol recovered to finish 13th, but something tells me they're all aiming higher this time.
Dear EG,

Team wrestling match. Incontrol and Idra on one team. Machine, Lz, Inka and Tasteless on the other. Who would win? This is a very important question to me.

Signed,
Future Evil Genius

Incontrol versus Tyler was hard fought, close match at MLG Raleigh.

6b. Hustle and Flow

TLAF-Liquid`HuK's not alone at MLG -- his teammates Tyler and Ret will be attending MLG DC as well. Both were regarded as among the best in international Brood War, but neither has scored a significant SC2 tournament win. Ret's only recently returned to heavy practice, so he's coasting on reputation alone. Tyler brushed aside a disappointing MLG Raleigh and rebounded with deep runs in both TL Opens and a recent 3-2 win over Qxc in the GGI.
Dear Liquid Players,

How do you feel about Nazgul's cowardly play (cannon rushing) in the Liquid FFA? Ret were you angry at him?

--Liquid fanboy

PS - Can I get TLOs autograph? Does he nuke you in practice?

5. Root Rebound, Part I

Will we see five quarterfinalists from the same team at MLG DC? Probably not. But Root remains consistently strong throughout their lineup: CauthonLuck, Drewbie, and Slush finished 6th, 11th, and 12th place at MLG Raleigh. On any given day, one of them can crack the Top 4.
Dear Slush,

Have you ever played ZvZ at a LAN event? Just wondering because you were the only Zerg in the Top 16 last time. Have you picked up any tips from watching Fruit Dealer?

For the swarm,
Generic 1800 Diamond Zerg

If Qxc faces HuK again, expect medivacs and an epic match.

4. Root Rebound, Part II

In DC, Qxc looks to improve upon his second place finish at IEM NY. His teammate Kiwikaki didn't make it out of groups, but a the word on the street was that he was feeling quite ill all weekend. At MLG Raleigh, both players were taken out by eventual champion Huk, but they both have demonstrated the ability to advance far in big tournaments.
Dear Kiwikaki,

I tried to talk to you at MLG Raleigh but all you said to me was "Sup dood." Is that the secret to poker success?

--Aspiring Poker Player

3. Natural SeleCTion

Winning one 512-man TL Open event is hard enough. Winning two in a row is nearly impossible, but Select did it anyway, even showing off some nice Protoss offrace skills in the process. Can he carry the momentum to DC? At MLG Raliegh, Select was "seeded" 44th and finished 7th. You can bet he'll have a higher status this time. Currently, he's the highest rated American player in the SC2 International TLPD.
Dear Select

I had a seizure watching your FPView, can you cover my medical costs? I'm staying at a nearby DC hospital.

Yours,
MLG Raleigh Spectator

2. Raleigh Repeat

The one thing HuK does not lack is confidence and saving his best for when it matters most. This past weekend at IEM American Championships, he 3-0'd out of his group, lost to qxc in the semifinals, and promptly mothership and carrier rushed two games, going down 0-2 to Drewbie. But Huk rallied and managed to pull out the 3-2 comeback win for a respectable third place finish. Many other players would be happy with that result, but Huk was stewing. He expects to win every event he enters, and didn't even know the prize money for third place at IEM. But this particular field is loaded, and repeating as champion will be a daunting task.
Dear Huk,

I'm your biggest fan! You beat qxc really easily at MLG Raleigh but since then he's beaten you in both TL Opens and in at IEM. Do you want me to break his legs or something for you?

--HuK Bouncer #1

Almost 50% of TL users predict Idra to win MLG DC.

1. The Non-Korean from Korea

It was a disappointing GSL1 for EG.IdrA. Fortunately, he promptly qualified for GSL2, and is infinitely wiser this time. A lesson from Lotze: "If your opponent appears to be doing a cheese build you received a scouting report about, he may still actually be going proxy void rays". The stakes aren't quite as high at MLG DC for Idra, but the pressure is just the same. He's here to win, and anything short of making the finals would be seen as a failure.
Dear Idra,

Please 6-pool. Just do it once. Cool did it in the quarterfinals of the GSL. Even if it fails, every player you play from then on has it in the back of their minds. One time!!

Sincerely,
A useful fan toi have

This Saturday, one player will walk away with a cool $2,500 and the respect of an ocean of nerds. MLG DC is the first "open" North American live event with this many top international players, and it's open slots sold out in a matter of minutes. But if you were not able to sign up, take heart -- passes for November's MLG Dallas are still on sale, and if the opportunity to school a pro isn't enough of a motivation, Dallas boasts an increased $17,500 prize pool.

Spectator passes are free, and there's no experience quite like watching matches on a big screen with hundreds of Starcraft 2 fans. But for those that cannot make it out to DC, Day9 and JP will cast the tournament live on MLG's stream. Go to mlgpro.com at 5:00 PM EDT on Friday for the first round coverage. You can find the details of the event at the MLG, StarCraft 2 information page. For a full list of the players, go here. Check out the live report thread once the games get rolling and don't forget to cheer for the Liquid` players, especially Ret, who made the trip all the way from the Netherlands in his first big SC2 live event.

MLG probably has the best production values for an American tourney, so much better than IEM. Also, Idra really does need to do that 6 pool, would be greatest moment of the tourney lol.
