Also why are people acting like FNATIC > IG is a big upset? Strongest western team vs arguably weakest KR/CN team, was always a tossup with FNATIC probably favourites. It's not just the Fnatic victory, it's the way in which they won. Fnatic completely outclassed IG and stomped them, and that much no one was really expecting. On CLG's game, they picked a 2-threat comp with Jinx bot and Darius top, with Pobelter playing Lulu mid. Zion got shut down hard on Darius by the enemy Gnar which left only Doublelift as a big threat, and Pobelter as half a threat; the game was close but with FW in the lead for most of the game until Xmithie hit an Elise Cocoon on the enemy Tristana at a critical point, which CLG snowballed very effectively into a win. Zion and Aphro played like ass, Liftlift carried hard, and Pobelter played really well.

Huh? In the current format each of those teams plays 6 games. If you did 8 team Bo1 groups, they'd play 7 AND have a higher chance of playing opponents close to their skill level. If you want an "exhibition" type format, then you precisely want a format where teams play more games against DIFFERENT opponents. If you have small groups in an invitation/seeded tournament, it's very hard to have good games in group stage because you try to seed strong teams against teams that are worse than them. Bigger groups give more chances for strong teams to play strong teams, and weak teams to play weak teams, resulting in more good games. The tradeoff is that seeded small groups makes it easier to protect strong teams' entry into the bracket stage because seeding is designed to put the strongest teams in groups with weaker teams so that they can advance. But for seeding to be effective, the information by which you seed groups has to be sound. When you lack information to properly rank teams in a way that you can seed effectively (as Riot does because there hasn't been any international competition), trying to seed small groups is a crapshoot anyway (hell, Riot made it a crapshoot by making group drawing basically random), so you lose the advantage of small, seeded groups. what are you even advocating? i was comparing the setup right now vs just having a single bracket tourney, with the takeaway that group stage is largely irrelevant in the competitive sense. if you want to have a bigger group stage fine go ahead, but it is also not relevant to my point.

I think today is more clear than yesterday, but I expect at least 2 predictions to be wrong...

LGD OG should be a good game to watch for a potential upset today

One good thing for TSM is that almost nobody expects them to do well so the pressure is lower
