At any point of IEM Season 6 Championship, if you think of an interesting byline, please drop a sentence in the Pro Scene thread.

At the end of the month, I'll catalogue the results of Hannover but also any interesting facts or events that happen over the course of the tournament.

Thanks.

I think they seriously underestimated m5 if they expected to beat them.

Dissecting M5's play

We've seen M5 dominate Kiev and really put on a show at Hannover, but what exactly makes them tick?

Many have described / observed M5 as being:

-super aggressive
-partial to counterjungling
-excellent at executing teamfights

I don't disagree with the above, but I feel that at the core of their play is the pre-game decisions that they make as team, with respect to picks/bans and itemization.

M5 bans

M5 typically bans champions that punish over-aggression (Karthus, Shen, Rammus) and in one specific example, champions that heavily influence teamfights (Cassiopeia). This allows them to play the way they are comfortable with.

M5 picks

M5 typically picks champions with a strong late-game / heavy teamfight capabilities. This is perhaps THE best way to draft in League of Legends, as unlike the other game *cough* DotA*cough*, champions with strong late-game in LoL do not get a weak early-game as a counterbalance (think Ryze, Shyvanna). In addition, drafting champions with good teamfight prowess allows for comebacks in the event that the laning phase does not go too well in their favor.

M5's play

M5 as a team applies high pressure throughout the whole map, not unlike the optimal Dominion strategy. What this means is M5 typically pushes out all three lanes, if possible, freeing up time for extra movement around the enemy jungle / recalling to buy. This also restricts the enemies' movements in addition to lowering their CS when the turret inevitably steals some last hits. While this might sound dangerous, when executed as a team it really puts a lot of stress on the lanes which a lone jungler is unable to relieve. The opposing jungler is torn between helping multiple lanes out and protecting his own creeps from invasion.

M5's itemization

What I found highly interesting / enlightening was M5's itemization, something which I think is instrumental to their success in most teamfights. M5's jungler, Diamondez almost always gets Aegis, which is obviously a super efficient item during teamfights where everyone stands to benefit from the aura. GoSu Pepper typically starts Faerie Charm into Heart of Gold, forgoing Philo Stone's sustain for the additional health buffer which is typically useful only for teamfights. In addition, GoSu Pepper goes for Zeke's Herald in a lot of games, even ones where M5 goes double AP. Where most teams spend their support gold on Philo Stone -> Shurelya's, M5's support gold is spent on Zeke's Herald which provides actual combat benefits.

An extreme example of M5's itemizing for teamfights/lategame is Dar1en, who often forgoes WARDS and makes up for his lack of vision by playing push-out+recall/invade (the need for wards to counter lane ganks is significantly lowered when you aren't in lane).

EDIT:
Changelog: Changed title from Breaking down M5's play to Dissecting M5's play because dissecting is a cool word.

I was under the impression that CLG was the first team really troubling M5, especially SV's early oracles were crucial. In the interview after g2 Alex Ich looked kinda happy & released as if he was glad everything went so well for them. The typical "see hero kill hero" M5 attitude of unshakable confidence was gone IMO.

However, they played it safe and deserved to win in the end, but CLG was the closest of all teams yet to end M5's impressive winning streak and they could have won g2 if they hadn't made those 2-3 gamebreaking mistakes.

What I found the most interesting was that M5's playstyle is almost identical to CLG's playstyle @Cologne/Guangzhou last year. I am sure if you watch the old VODs you will see a ton of similarities between the two teams.

Great analysis nyx

I think this is a key point that a lot of people are overlooking. I've been saying that Stark's was overpowered for a long time. Now that it's been changed to Zeke's and it's much more accessible for supports to grab I'm very surprised it's not core on supports. The benefit of having a Zeke lets your AD carry forgo grabbing lifesteal and attack speed. M5 loves playing their AD carries very tanky (tanky Urgot, triple dorans/wriggles Kennen, etc...) and they still manage to do tons of damage in teamfights because their lifesteal/attack speed itemization is partially covered by the Zeke aura.

I think one thing that makes m5 so incredible strong is that every single player is so incredible strong. There is so much talk about who is the weak point in tsm (hey trm, or regi, or w/e), there is DL derping in CLG or jiji slumping. There is no such thing in m5, everyone is absolutely top tier. Add that they actually play as a team, too = super strong right there. Besides that, and I actually thing that is one of the most important things tom5's success is that every player has so many champs. It feels like darien and alex can both play 90 out of 93 champs at tournament level. Genja plays every ad, and even those that aren't known as ads. Diamond plays tons of junglers, too. They hve amazing picks, but that is also due to that they have huge pool to draw from.

I don't really think CLG underestimated M5. Game 2 was basically won for them until they just made a series of stupid decisions and threw the game away. Game 1 was crazy close but was a combination of Doublelift losing bottom too hard and M5 winning a really decisive fight at baron to turn the game. M5 played better and could probably be called the better team but it's not like they're head and shoulders above CLG. If anything that series proved how close the top NA teams are to the top EU teams. Again.

Argh ... that 2nd CLG vs M5 game was aggravating to watch. Two frankly AWFUL plays by Hotshot start throwing away the lead (when he got caught 1v5 twice in 5 mins), then they seal it by Saint for some reason going for the baron steal and getting chunked before the fight even starts. CLG threw that game real hard.

Can you state why you feel this way? A lot of people (myself included) are expecting M5 to just run Dignitas over.

I would be EXTREMELY thrilled if Dignitas won, don't get me wrong. I'm just curious why you feel confident that Dignitas WILL take it.

for the baron fight i think clg should have placed the ward that HS would teleport to more close to baron so that there would be 2 tanky guys in M5's face with 2 steal threats, making focusing either a very unappealing option
