good lord I played 4 games at level 1 and in every one there were at least 4 people smurfing around gold level, not only that but in all of them there were organized duo ques playing kill lanes and coordinating each other's ganks. WTF. It was basically a normal gold/silver level ranked game with 1 or 2 really unfortunate beginners getting instakilled by some dickheads on skype organizing repeated three man tower dives. And all these smurfs were flaming. | ||

And all these smurfs were flaming. Very strange. I played a game at level 1, and went 45 - 1 as GP mid. And I`m in silver. Maybe I just got lucky. I don`t really run into smurfs until a few games in usually. | ||

Grail does interact with bonus mana. The unique ability is mana regen based on your missing mana. So if you have twice as large a pool you have twice as much potential for missing mana and so twice as much potential regen from chalice/Grail. Edit: its for this reason that it is actually currently really strong on ROA mages who can double or triple their mana in the mid game with rod. Anivia or Swain with rod and cup will basically never run out of mana | ||

Even with blue, you'll run oom with just rod or tear. Chalice alone gives a fair amount of regen, but you can spend far, far faster than it comes back in, and while you can get away with blue+chalice, there isn't really leeway to sustain ulti simply for area denial. Have to get chalice+either rod or tear to even stay somewhat mana neutral in lane as well as give a pool for usage. The idea behind that was to buff the mages who actually built mana items in addition to grail. I feel like almost every other mage who just buys grail already doesn't have mana constraints. Swain/kass already have mana sustain built into their kits and need the pool only for sustaining mana burst in fights, which leaves anivia as the only one who really hard OOM's while clearing waves. | ||

The point was that chalice interacts positively with bonus mana despite the claim of the person I was quoting. If you have 1500 mana base and are missing 1000 of that then chalice provides an extra 20 MP5. If you have 500 mana and are missing 300 of that then chalice provides an extra 6 MP5. The bonus mana on Rod or Tear (or any other bonus mana item) then significantly increases the bonus MP5 that chalice provides. Edit: indeed, without bonus mana (or early in the game) most mages get very little out of the unique passive from chalice. Since it will cap around 6 to 10 MP5 and that is around 50% of your base (such that the cdr double fey charm item is as or more effective) | ||
