Busted out Ryze yesterday after I lost a game against him, that champion is like riding a bike. I think I'll try to learn Irelia for S5, I like to mix up my pool in the new season. Late Nov early Dec according to the last two years.

Last year we had somebody with a list of exactly what had been played/banned in how many games. I want that again. http://i.imgur.com/EJjxOCq.pngHave fun.
Some things that I see from this that might be interesting:
Champions that are both highly contested and also seeing great results Alistar (100% P/B rate, 100% win rate) Janna (62% P/B rate, 61% win rate) Zed (60% P/B rate, 67% win rate)
Champions that aren't often banned but still win the vast majority of their games Irelia (8% ban rate, 75% win rate in 12 games) Rengar (14% ban rate, 80% win rate in 7 games)
Champions that are highly contested but not winning very often Nami (46% P/B rate, 40% win rate) Nidalee (44% P/B rate, 20% win rate) Syndra (42% P/B rate, 30% win rate)
Champions that are not often banned and yet picked in almost every game and not performing one way or the other Khazix (14% ban rate, 72% pick rate, 47% win rate) Lucian (16% ban rate, 54% pick rate, 48% win rate)
Aatrox and Gragas have been banned but never picked.

I don't think it's worth looking at win rates in the group stages as only a handful of games weren't lop sided matchups.
|
Yeah but then you're gonna say "I don't think it's worth looking at win rates in the elimination brackets because the sample sizes are too small."

You started with 14 RP. To get to 0, you need to: Buy 840 RP 1 time(s). Buy 400 RP 2 time(s). Buy 1x 3 Day IP Boost (520). Buy 2x 975RP Skin on sale (487RP). Buy 1x 2 Win IP Boost (160). Have fun!

I guess winrates are just bad in general then for this tournament?
|
I don't think win rate means anything. It's just too small of a sample regardless, especially when you look at picks that are also often banned.
I believe looking at total pick + ban % is a good metric for the power of the champion in the competitive scene.
|
If you look at Nidalee for example, she was highly banned, and didn't perform well because she was mostly picked by teams against whom a Nidalee ban wasn't deemed worthy, hence the notion that she's been played by subpar (for the tournament's level) Nidalee players, affecting her performance and thus her winrate.
|
Another thing that may be affecting Nidalee in particular is that Nidalee is the go to top for split push based comps, and split pushing is a good strategy to go for if you know the other team is better than you.
|
Data from a group stage is hardly perfect, but it does seem like Kha/Ryze/Kog/Thresh/Lucian are the 'golden' point of balance, where they see bans, see picks, and deviate from 50% probably based on the teams that happened to pick them. Could probably throw Trist and Janna in there, with their winrates being pushed further apart because I'm pretty sure Trist was a favorite of some of the bad performing teams while Janna was a popular Korean pick.
Edit: Twitch/Ori seem just fine as well. Yasuo I think is perhaps stronger than this data shows because there were some straight up feeds by Yasuo players(looking at you, Cool) or he'd be in that 70%+ win category.

For the most part I don't think it's worth looking at winrates unless we're seeing wide use at all pro play level.

Looking at data is never useless.
As long as you understand the limitations of the data you have, you can hopefully figure out something from it.
