I guess my success with him only works because I hit a majority of my hooks. When you're bad at hitting hooks, he's a much weaker champion. He is decent against Janna, Lulu, and Nami for sure. Vs Sona it feels like a skill match up. But his lack of pre6 burst or defense steroid makes him pretty weak against tanky support s.
Techincally, everything is a skill matchup. It's not that difficult to beat a thresh as blitz if you're hooking right either, it just depends on how you pick your engages.
Mobo boots before sightstone or sightstone first? Mobo boots or whatever the second upgrade of coin is? I feel like when you rush mobo boots it's hard to do teh full on fight, especially with a doran's start (it feels like you're wasting the dorans then), but it's not like the coin upgrade gives you battle stats either.
Also I was going to ask what to build if you're going carry support but turns out triforce blitz is hilarious (incidently, you also MELT towers). I tried AP first which seemed lackluster and something like muramana is obviously not going to snowball for you as support, but I think I found my answer.

Iceborn is less cool than expected, since the knock-up on E defeats the purpose of the slow field by and large. You still have 3 other skills, and it gives good stats, but it's worse than Frozen Heart, I'd say.

Seriously though, I don't understand why the item isn't more common. If I'm a mana champion and not an ADC (or someone who will get a big chunk of the CS), I grab that thing every game. The regen is excellent and it pays for itself and then some by the game end.

It would take 25 minutes for 5 nomads to pay themselves off with 100 minions per 10 mins and perfect execution. Thats not bad really.

I'd expect a nerf of the shield's value at the higher levels, esp. as it means you just can't die in clean-up situations unless there's a 700+ range point'n'click spell to pop your shield or a skillshot (the way it works means it can get popped "for free" (if you can prevent him from getting within 475 range during 2s), but also that if don't have means to do so it's also impossible to bait it).

I get mobos before sightstone if the laning phase is lasting longer than usual. Typically by the time I upgrade coin and get rank 1 boots with a couple wards, laning phase tends to be dwindling down due to jungler ganks/lane pressure causing a tower to get low. If both towers are healthy/both junglers aren't having successful ganks bot then I'll rush mobos to try roam (or shark) around for a gank mid or just to exert my robotic dominance. If tower falls you want sightstone to get vision up to counter their roams mid so you can make smarter decisions. Mobos are overrated unless you're doing some serious running back and forth, otherwise you're fine with rank 1s and using mana wisely with your overdrive.
I do roam a lot, so it's more tailored to my playstyle, but I could see it working for others too.

Doran's shield+1 hp pot+Yellow trinket -> Coin (2nd upgrade whenever possible) -> Sightstone (Boots of speed somewhere here) -> Red trinket+Coin max upgrade+Boots upgrade -> Frozen heart
There's no reason, not to start doran's shield at the moment, it's just that strong. Frozen heart is op, cus of your passive, rest is standard.
