European servers are gone crazy.
At this point, I think it would be more of an announcement to announce when the EU servers are working, as opposed to when they're broken.

Personally, it's two things: 1) The interest from our users has been rising for a long time. If we are ever going to do anything with League, I'd like to know the game pretty well and play pretty well too. I used to be high masters in StarCraft, I'm Diamond 1 equivalant in Dota and I was top50 on the ladder in HoN for a while. I want to be the same in League so I can take myself seriously if I ever need to have something to do with the game. 2) I've played about 5.000 Dota games since GamesCom 2011 and I still love the game. However, the matchmaking system in Dota is not the greatest. There's some problems with how they determine your MMR, I believe. They keep saying the matchmaker is good and the people in the same games have the same MMR. While that might be true, the skill difference between the players in the same game is often very high (higher than I've encountered in any other game) and it leads to stomps one way or another. On top of that, I am really competitive all the way down to the most casual level. I want rankings. Hell, I need rankings. I want something to strive for, I want to see my MMR rise and I want to feel rewarded when I reach my goal. I guess, there's also a 3) I like to learn new things. I like to challenge myself and a completely new game is a great way to do this. :-)

Well, I played both Dota 1 inhouses, Dota 2 inhouses and HoN for many many games (over 10.000) and I've never experienced the skill difference being this in the games as they are here. I'm pretty sure Valve also posted at some point that they're working on their MM system as they're not satisfied with it.

League would have the same issue to be honest if there were not so many artificial barriers preventing people with such a wide variance of skill from playing with each other.

Keep in mind that 99% uptime corresponds to 1.6 hours down per week. So if the number really is 99% I don't think we'd see so many complaints. But lag spikes probably do not count against an "uptime" statistic either.

When the majority of the game was Dota ports and a few S2 Heroes (open beta and 1-2 months after retail) it was the best game. But as soon as they released Midas, Monkey King and whatnot, it all just went south.

You get wide variance because Valve not only tries to match the average MMR of stacks, but also tries to match the variance as well (e.g. if you have a 3-stack where one person is way worse, it tries to put someone equally shit on the other team as well. It makes "balanced" games but those balanced games are not necessarily fun. League would have the same issue to be honest if there were not so many artificial barriers preventing people with such a wide variance of skill from playing with each other. Never had the problem in HoN in over 10k games.

I think it's a stupid idea, personally, but if you need an explanation for why Valve's matchmaking sucks, I think that's the closest you'll get to one.

If the barrier creates better user experience, then why not do it though? Even in LoL Garena server at 3am morning, I still have better search time than Dota2, and the games are much more balanced. Valve just tries to be cute and it didn't work and they are still stubborn about it. As bumblebee said, Dota2 has the worst MM system that I've seen for a while.

And as much as you can complain about DotA 2 matchmaking as a whole, it's damn good at sniffing out smurfs.
