You all followed probably on Reddit that the Korean Government (Family & Gender ministry) called Riot for a hearing about youth protection.
I didnt mention it here because I thought its just venting air but now it has real consequences.

Riot needs to close their fan art page/ restrict access on www.leagueoflegends.co.kr because some fan art which was not suited for minors was posted on it. Riot said that they didnt expect it and will take measure to change it.

Because of the addiction problem Riot may need to implent more stuff (cooling off time) but not yet certain.

The Korean government also said that the real reason is they can't allow a foreign game company to become number 1 game company in Korea.

Source: This is game

Hope that clarifies.

Was thinking the same. Even Blizzard is based in the US and they started the starcraft trend, so i don't see how this is becoming a problem for the Korean government now?

ah thanks. Though why would the korean government have a stint with a foreign game company being the #1 game company? that sounds really aloof from them

LoL has over 40% rating in pc bangs since 67 weeks. I think they mean playerbase wise.

@daemir
http://www.nexon.com/Home/Game.aspx

nearly every other game which is played in pc bangs are belonging to nexon. Fifa and Sudden Attack which rank on no2 and no3 are nexon in Korea

ncsoft is also korean - lineage 2, aion, and blade & soul are all games of theirs that are/have been popular in korea

as for why the government might care that a foreign game is dominating the market, gaming is part of the 'culture' industry (along with more recognized exports like kpop) that the south korean government promotes/protects

Making stupid laws for foreign companies in Korea in order to push them out and give an edge to Korean companies is a really common thing that the Korean government does a lot in every domains.

That's quite shocking. I guess I was super naive in my image of Korea, with KeSPA being a government organization and all.

Oh and for the PC rating thing. I believe the last time LoL wasn't #1 was the week Diablo 3 was released, but they were back very soon and haven't been off it since. Or something like that.

Yeah, how dare the non-Korean company have a sole, and lead game on the charts! Clearly Korea needs top everything to combat this monopoly! We're not going to pay attention to the fact the NA LCS and Coke Zero seems to have kickstarted esports in NA!

This entire thing seems to ass backwards to me that it's insulting. I guess I should boycott Korean games/teams/players and support the amateur scene even harder in spite. That's the message SK seems to be giving me.

Disclaimer: This is intended to be an aggressively toned post, but it isn't meant to be aimed at you. It's only so I can quote the translation.

Yes, they can go the route Valve went and partner with a Korean company. Nexon is responsible publishing Dota 2 in Korea.

Riot Korea is the main organization in charge of LoL in Korea, but they're still a subsidiary of Riot.

That seems like a pretty asinine solution to be honest.

While it is an independant country and they have every right to protect their own companies, the way they are going about it is so fucking illogical.

Im a korean lol fan. i'll tell you guys a truth...
the main point is, governments are lier.

they referred about foreign games, but their lots of insisting is pointing korean online games, too.

here, they are also insisting that game is as dangerous as cigarette, alchol, and drug...

and because of a new law including that(progressing discussion in gov...), all game company in korea would have to give 6% of their total selling money per year.

It's different in China. It's less about xenophobia and more about connections and money. Money is always king in China and having a Chinese partner means more cuts for everyone involved. Korea is about being "respectable" in its official image and extremely arbitrary behind the scenes.

Korea is just xenophobic/patriotic - two sides of the same coin here.

you guys told about nexon few times.
restrictly, nexon is not a korean company now.
actually, nexon has lots of child company, and....maybe last year or before, the japanese company(nexon japan) became their head company. We're guessing they fought with gov, or predicted this situation...

in korea, also, we have a department called "ministry of gender equality"blahblah.
they always insist that for their yearly money, but, their real name is yer-sung-boo, translated "department for woman." in English. lots of korean agree that the company is trash and useless. these all situation are from in te department

The Korean government takes these really weird measures when it comes to patriotic matters and economic policies, as well as that darned ministry. I don't know too much about them, but I don't think they're going the right direction...

I thought Riot was owned by a Chinese company. Tencent. What's the point of closing down a Western company owned by a Chinese company? Seems silly.

I'm pretty sure Riot KR headquarters gives Koreans jobs. Who cares if Riot is a Korean company? It benefits the Korean economy as much as that of any other company.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

That makes sense.

But it will only hurt the good of esports in the long run if a game can't be popular just because it was made by another country.
Imagine if everyone were forced to only play games made in their country. No Esport would ever gain recognition on a global scale and unify people from different countries.

I wouldn't be that worried about this. Riot just needs to spend more on lobbying when compared to their competitors in Korea. Riot is starting to have a significant effect on Korean companies so that logically means more government lobbying.

The Korean government also said that they can't allow a foreign game company to become number 1 game company in Korea.

uhh, source on that? That just seems pulled straight out of the ass

If I mistranslated it tell me

Huh, which korean gaming company has been #1 then? I can't even name a korea gaming company.

Nexon for example is a korean game company

Just to clarify the translation. "the real reason we (the government) summoned representative Oh was to stand against the monopolization of a foreign company (on Korean soil). We wanted to give the foreign companies to bear the same responsibilities that the domestic companies bear, to promote their (domestic companies) growth."

Hope that clarifies.

Based on this, it sounds like the Korean government want Riot to have the same obligations/etc that Korean companies have with regard to the responsibilities to Koreans.
Blizzard already do this with limits on when you can play etc (people have had issues with playing in foreigner online tournaments after midnight, like Maru I think).

It seems like they are just saying that Riot can't be allowed to be a western company operating in Korea unless they adhere to the same rule as a Korean company, as otherwise this disadvantages the Korean companies.
Making Riot have to do the same stuff as a Korean company doesn't favour domestic companies, it levels the playing field.
HOLY CHECK!
