@Infundibulum, sure, but we are talking about how to improve most efficiently, not about how to most efficiently have fun, which is a different topic altogether (although you are welcome to start it if you meant to do so with your post)

The reason for not buying the XP boost in my grind to level 30 is so I have more time understand what each hero does, and what each item does, etc. And the more champs I buy the more that helps because you learn these things faster by playing them than playing against them. So I didn't really mean I wanted a big champ pool, but just the chance to learn the majority of them/what they do during my grind to 30. My plan is to focus on some ADC champs and maybe mid laners once I get to ranked. Like Yango said I come from Dota 2, I also play at the highest possible level in MM in Dota 2, so in learning LoL I think the most important thing for me to get used to is the heroes and items, because things like farming/laning/map awareness/etc I am already pretty decent at because that somewhat transfers over or is easy to pick up 1000x quicker htan someone truly new to the genres. At the same time I want to have fun and play cool heroes, so I'm also using the grind to 30 to just mess around and try different things. LIke Yango mentioned Dota 2 players tend to play every hero at some point, but I'm pretty competitive and my mindset will definitely change once I'm in ranked. Although I kind of disagree with playing 1-2 champs in order to progress. I think if you have to do taht to hit diamond you're just bad. As you can see if you think about it it really doesn't matter if you learn things in ranked or normals. Your rating converges on your skill pretty well so you can figure stuff out as much as you like and just zoom right back to your regular rating when you're done. Additionally if you try hard in ranked and otherwise play normals, your normal elo is gonna suck so ironically you'll be playing vs relatively bad players every time you're trying to learn something, which according to the party line means less learning. I do have one counterexample to that last point though. I think it was toxic who was one of the best quake pros and carefully selected training partners that were much worse than him. His logic is that if you make one major mistake in quake vs a top player you will spend the rest of the match getting bent over and not get much, whereas vs a mediocre player you can return things to normalcy with some work. Anyway, the upshot is that skill gained in either queue is reflected equally in your rating. You really have no reason to treat them differently.

I am even not sure what calling someone bad is supposed to do when we are talking about improving, which does probably mean going from bad -> good. Just a very weird comment to make. @Infundibulum, sure, but we are talking about how to improve most efficiently, not about how to most efficiently have fun, which is a different topic altogether (although you are welcome to start it if you meant to do so with your post) Bad = EU. Good = NA. Bad to Good example is Bjergsen. He was bad as EU. Good as NA. + Show Spoiler + Hue

But I feel like this is like the dark side of the force. You improve more quickly over the short term to get a better rank, but it doesn't help you in the long term. Phantomlord played only Draven. I don't think he'll ever be able to learn how to do anything but ADC. If he tries jungle he'll have to learn all the basics of jungling that most people learned at level 20.

Well one idea is that if you play at a higher level with better players etc you also improve. So one tactic might be to climb in Elo using one champ and branch out then.

Get to high rank off 1-3 champions, then you can diversify in the crucible that is diamond 1.

I'm pretty sure a diamond 1 adc only player would still be better at jungling than someone who plays every role and is platinum. It's not as if you don't learn things about the other roles just because you play one role specifically.

Dang. I knew I should have checked. It's not as if you don't learn things about the other roles just because you play one role specifically. I don't think he's ever jungled. And he can't even play Ez or Cait or Varus or Trist. I imagine I wouldn't want to learn jungle much if I got to Diamond, started jungling, and went 1-7 every game and lost every game as a jungler. http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/37544949#ranked-stats From a game Theory perspective everyone's heard of the team that has a 1550, a 1650, a 1750, an 1850, and a 1950 elo vs a 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000 elo player. There are 5 1v1s. the 1550 elo noob faces the 2000 elo guy in a 1v1. The 1650 faces the 1600. The 1750 faces the 1700. The 1850 faces the 1800. The 1950 faces the 1900. Team 1 wins even though down an average of 50 elo. Destiny is in lobby. One person on his team calls ADC, one person calls Mid, one calls Top. Destiny's like "no, I'm ADC". So then he goes ADC. He gets a 1500 elo support. He's a 2000 elo adc. His mid and top are 2000 elo. His jungler is 1500 elo jungler because the jungler didn't get their main role either. The enemy team has someone who's 1900 elo everything. They have 4 2000 elos and 1 1900. Which team wins?

Agreed. if you play adc and switch to jungling, then you're gonna be worse than people at your rank. But you will still own most people who are lower rank than you with your "off race."
