The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of viable choices for mana except Chalice/Grail right now. Tear builds into AA which isn't that great (glasscannon), and Catalyst/RoA is not that great for mana sustain outside of the laning phase.

I think it's more of most AP's can very easily teamfight with the mana from just grail+blue buff. Only a few have such high burst mana usage to warrant building a pool (zilean, AP kog, kassadin), or have kits that benefit immensely from being able to sustain high mana usage over long periods of time(Anivia, swain, karthus)

Make your mother play your placement matches.
Play any lane and last hit very poorly, I'm talking 10cs by 10min. Then force a dragon fight with one of your teams member away, lose it completely, write gg in team chat and that's that.
