I wanted to open up a discussion about applying custom skins for your LoL characters. I've been browsing the internet a little bit and have found a few things about this subject but none from a community that I trust like TL. The biggest difference between buying a skin from Riot and applying one on your local machine is that modding your own files only effects what you see and not the way that other players in your game see you. But the potential for some pretty cool, unique, and fun gameplay is opened up. I've found skins that turn Ashe into Ghost Kerrigan, Caitlyn into Nova, Morgana into the Queen of Blades, even turn Ammumu into Darth Vader or Garen into Steven Colbert.
I'd be happy to post links and instructions if this is something the community feels would be useful, but my main question is if it is Legal and if it is Ethical to modify your local files to apply custom skins. Obviously downloading pirated versions of a Super Teemo skin would be both illegal and unethical. I personally try to support Riot whenever I can financially because they've made a pretty awesome game, but sometimes a Champ I like to play doesn't have as cool of skins available as what I can find online.
So I'm asking TL, have you guys done any of this? Anyone have any experiences to share? Lets talk about it.
Edit 11.11.11 Links: http://leaguecraft.com/skins This site has a bunch of skins available to download. Its a very good place to start.
The main reason more people don't use custom skins from what I remember is you have to remove the skin before you patch to the next version then re apply it, that and people like to show off
i'm psure it's legal, because you're the only person in the game who can see the custom skin anyways. i think it also applies the skin to the champ in other games you play too, like if you have an ashe skin but you're not playing ashe and there's an ashe in the game that ashe will have the custom skin you downloaded. it's a hassle to keep up with though imo
Using Custom Skins is not against the ToS. Using modified files to unlock skins on your own client (but will not be shown to everyone else) is also fine and won't get you into trouble.
Informative youtube tutorial on installing custom skins:
Note that trying to install multiple custom skins on the same champ will screw up your game files pretty badly so uninstall old custom skins before installing new ones.
Ever since the change to how LoL's game files in one of the patches, it became extremely tedious to use custom skins. I used to use them all the time but just never bother with them anymore. Also, usually when you patch the patch will simply reset your skins back to default ones, which means you have to set back all your custom skins after every patch. Having to remove them before patching was only an issue for super early patches and is no longer an issue.
once you install the program there is a button that says "use with leaguecraft" if you hit that and follow the instructions to add the Firefox addon, it really takes the tedium out of applying the skins. In less than an hour I've added custom skins for almost every character in the game.
I like the Idea of streams doing this. Especially for champs that you see every damn game like MF, Jax, Teemo, Trynd, Kass, ect. Some are just pretty cool to look at.
