Speaking as a 1500s support, I think playing Taric is the absolute best you can do while AP Taric is legitmately OP. Soraka's really strong too, and Janna can work for some teams.
The key though is to just buy 1 or 2 wards reliably instead of massing wards a few times. A couple of wards gives you good enough coverage of an area for a while that you can build toward a Deathcap / DFG / WotA, depending on preference and gamestate.
Chalice is also fucking nuts on Taric specifically and I have no idea why I stopped buying it. You're pretty much getting an extra 20-30 mp5 from it alone by the time you actually rank your ult, and it's also a MR item that makes you overall quite tanky.

I thought that too but I really think it's better than the third DRing now just as a source of MR. Taric will burn through pretty much as much mana as you can get.
