If you have to pay to unlock playable characters its pay2win. atm it's the same as league: you can grind out currency in game to purchase both cosmetics or heroes, or you can buy it with USD or whatever. thats still p2w imo No. No its not. So I've you make a premade 5on5 and your team can only pick 1/3 of the heroes while the other team can pick all of them, then this will most likely by a massive disadvantage for the first team. I assume that some heroes are pretty good against certain other ones and certain strategies beat certain other strategies. By restricting the hero-pool you restrict these counterpicks and that causes imbalance and pay2win.
Still, no.

Solid arguments being made on both sides.

This is still a P2W model, kind of lame. Yeah you can get everything free if you invest what, 3000+ hours playing? Meh

Yes, unless you want to consider cosmetic items being "pay2win" like some people in this thread lol
Also, I believe you get 500 coins after a win and from what I've seen heroes can go for 3k-10k

maybe its pay to have a small advantage during drafting sooner

After watching people play this game for a while it dropped my interest in the game from almost nothing, to nothing. The game looks so mind numbingly casual. It reminds me of every Dota copy that has come out in the past few years. Dumb the game down, take all skillful things out like items, farming, etc and let people randomly smash their head against the keyboard to win.
WoW has had developers trying to copy WoW's success for years by dumbing down the formula or trying to appeal to the most casual of players, and virtually all of those games have fizzled out or have a tiny following at this point. You think Blizzard would have an understanding that making crappy versions of a successful game doesn't work out. I expect this game to pick up a bunch of players, and drop off incredibly quickly like all of their recent titles have.

You mean like Hearthstone?
Nope.

500 gold per level. Not per win. The leveling does seem fairly generous if they keep the same exp scaling for release.

But all the time you spent playing a game. People want to get all the unlocks asap so they have no aim anymore and can move on the the next game faster. They want to grind as many games as possible unimportant if they actually played it, the important part is that they finished it completely. And Free to play games that are not pay2win are horrible expensive for them, because you will have to spend a ton of time playing the game or pay endless amounts of money just to save some time and not get an advantage out of it.
Warlords of Draenor is like a heavens send game for them. Not long and every game on steam will offer the finished game version for 60 dollars extra, that will have a save with a 100% game already. Just buy the game and you are done already !

Yeah as weak as HS is competitively, it's a pretty fun game and most of all it's accessible as hell. It's the sad fact that somehow Blizzard was the one to make an online CCG easy to play. It's actually baffling how poorly Wizards of the Coast did in terms of making MtG accessible as an online when nearly everyone I know has played MtG at some point in their life and really enjoys it but don't play ever because of how much it costs to play a single weekend draft.
Blizzard got this bit right for sure.

Right... having locked content is now a "feature".
Explain to me why anyone even bothers to play DOTA then? It's such a casual game. I can't believe you don't have to unlock any gameplay content.

Looking at the streams it just feels like a LoL clone, everything from the art direction to the sound and words of the announcer, it doesn't even look like an original Blizzard game.

I feel similarly. The game seems like a more casual version of LoL.

The problem with catering to the casuals is that they don't tend to stick to one game for very long, it's the hardcore people that stay for the long run, so if you alienate those guys you might do well early in a game but then the player base will fizzle out.

The art direction looking like LoL?hu... It doesn't look like LoL at all to me but okay The thing that bothered me the most about the UI (it's kind of stupid though) is the minimap on the right. It really tells that they are trying to get people from LoL to play HOTS, as LoL is the only game that I know of with the minimap on the right. I hope there will be an option to change it, cause I can't for the life of me play with the minimap there after so much sc2/dota. Other than that it looks really fun and I'm eager to play it!

If you are good enough at league that you need every champion then you have already played it enough to the point where you have the runes most likely. That is if you want to play competively, and im not talking about solo q silver 1. Your paper might be sharper or your rock (marginally) heavier. You still need to use them correctly.

Every time I get interested in playing LoL again I remember I have to play another few hundred games just to have proper rune pages before I farm IP again to get the champs that are interesting. Then I give up and boot up DOTA.

i dont know shit about lols system, never played it.
but that skill is still the ultimate difference isnt an argument at all. if quake offered 5$ for more railgun dmg that would still be the definition of p2w.
