Confused about this game... I haven't looked at all of the thread pages yet, but I have to ask:

Are there items in this game? If not they are removing a huge amount of variability to the game.

Basically is a good and better version of LoL's Dominion

Less farming and worrying about minions, more all over the map objective fights

I think the game looks more like a WoW battleground than a DotA-like, think about arathi basin/alterac valley, for those who know them. No last hitting is not a problem per se because the game works in a fundamentally different way.

About everybody jungling to get XP: the enemy team can just 5-man down a lane and you have to defend or you lose, so it's not that simple.

It also seems similar to WoW battlegrounds in some respects with all the varied and interesting maps.


last hitting is actually a fucking brilliant mechanic that brings the whole "i can beat you and own your base" thing right down to a microscopic level.

the split-second tactical depth between two or more players competing over last hits and denies whilst managing...

player positioning,
creep aggro,
creep/wave positioning,
map awareness,
cooldowns,
mana,
xp/farm distribution,
item timing
AND HARASS...

is, gameplay-wise, no more of a gimmick than two or four players playing fucking tennis together.

on the surface it might seem contrived and silly - what do you mean, the ball has to go over the net?! - but as a competitive mechanic between players it is a widely complex and fascinating test of skill

So can someone give me some update?
is it still using the SC2 engine? It looks kinda different to SC2 graphics. (it says it is a new game? means it is a separate game?)
Is it gonna be f2p? I heard it will cost $20?

I'm actually glad for this. One of the reasons I am intimidated of picking up Dota2/LoL is having to read up on how I'm supposed to play properly. I think there are better ways to introduce variability. I think people need to improve on the genre and not just say anythign that deviates from traditional dota is automatically bad.

It's not a huge problem because you can always use the full name, plus both are popular enough for those acronyms to rank well. But if it was some small company you wouldn't want to just call your game "Cars" or something. Basically if your thing is popular enough you can call it what you want, but if you're struggling you want something unique enough that the mildly curious can actually find it.

Compared to Dota it seems like it's going to be less about farming and more about fighting, as well as being simpler overall. Plus there will be a variety of maps and objectives instead of just one. In theory these things could be good but it would be easy to screw up some of the subtler things that make Dota so good.

I think its meant to be simple skirmish game. 15 - 20 minutes, I am sure the abilities will allow the waves to move and be pushed a certain win on a classic style map. But keep in mind there are different maps with minigames built in to them like that pirate one with coins. It seems like its meant to be a simple fun jump in jump out game. More like WoW, its not a super intense competitive thing for everyone. I think Hearthstone is their competitive free game, with HotS being like an introduction to blizz universe for some, and fun nostalgia/franchise game play for others.

I hope they manage to make it fun to play AND watch. LoL is lacking the latter and dota isnt fun to play (for me).

depends what you're talking about... but the point I was making is that there are very harsh mechanisms in Dota that make sure that the team in the lead stays in the lead. And it's obvious that the devs recognized this, considering the increase in the bounty for ending kill streaks, the Rosh timer, the more frequent day/night cycles etc are meant to add more uncertainty and ways to turn games around. I still haven't really seen this have an effect on pub games, but it might make pro Dota more interesting. And after all, that's another issue with Dota -- it's a game meant for pros, not for pubs. Maybe that'll give HOTS some additional space to differentiate itself, although some part of me appreciates that Dota is so harsh

It's true that pubs can be pretty snowbally, but I do sometimes see comebacks even without the other team making a single huge mistake - often from split-pushing.

But I agree that this is something that HotS could possibly do differently.

All the information released currently points to a mindset that is very "anti-comeback". 20 minute games and game objectives that give neutral creeps to the side that kills them accelerate the game to a quick ending.(the idea the designers stated they wanted in their interview video) I can easily say that the mechanics they have presented thus far are very snowbally.
