Hey guys, I'm a high school senior right now and as many of you may know...college apps are just around a corner. Just out of curiosity I wanted to see what some of you college kids had to say. Post your stuff in this format
College currently attending: major/minor Year graduated high school: High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Things you wish you knew before college:

If you sleep with the admissions counselor, anything can happen!
Also it's 3 am on a Saturday night which means most college kids are either passed out or still pretty much wasted. So don't expect many replies for a while.

College currently attending: University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Year graduated high school: 2006 High School GPA: 3.7 Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): SAT - 1160/1600 1600/2400 -_-;; lol... Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: my school was pretty easy getting into. i think i only applied to 2 colleges and i got into mine right away with 7k scholarship a year. Things you wish you knew before college: SAT not important =P

Current College: UCSD
Graduated HS: 2006
HS GPA: 3.3 (raised to a 3.6 after 1st semester of senior year but they don't look past that)
Stats: SAT - 2180 SAT 2 - 720 Bio / 800 World History / 770 US History AP Scores - Eng Lang 5 / Eng Lit 5 / US Hist 5 / World Hist 5 / Euro Hist 5 / Art Hist 5 / Environ 5 / Stats 3 / Bio 3 / Comp Sci 2 / US Govt 5 / Micro Econ 4 one more I forgot
Things That gave me and Edge: I had a book of poetry published at age 15... president of Philosophy club, played basketball at school for three years, co-president Amnesty International. Probably the biggest one was being on Academic Decathlon
... that's basically it.

3.3 was that weighted or unweighted?

College currently attending: Stanford
major/minor: economics
Year graduated high school: 2005
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): (on a 5.0 scale) 5.0 unweighted, 5.70 weighted (As in honors classes are 5.5 and As in AP classes are 6.0)
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 36 ACT (did not do SAT after that), a bunch of 5s (both physics, calc BC, chem, world history, stats, us history, english literature), SAT II I think I went 590/600/600 in Physics, Math, US History (I think it was out of 600 in my day...)
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I wrote a personal statement that was about a summer I spent with my friends, not some academic (or non-) achievement of mine. I think it's cooler to be a real person than someone with a wack impressive resume.
Things you wish you knew before college: if you go to an elite college, grad school is pretty much the standard nowadays. You need to keep driving full steam to get into a good one. i.e. college isn't the end of the road for pushing yourself in school.

i'm in the same position as you.
i'd like to see you post the same information too, it's interesting to read what other people are offering to application readers.
Colleges applying to: early action to yale, couple other ivy's and duke/u chicago and the like Graduating 09 UW 4.0, 4.6 approx weighted. SAT: 2180, SATII: 770 Korean 760 Math II 750 Chemistry, mostly 4's for AP, 34 ACT composite,
i'd like to hear from people that go to top colleges, some rules of thumb when writing a college essay, etc

The essay portion should be creative (ie event in life) and personal. Admissions officers already know what activities you do, essay just lets you show more of yourself. Don't submit an essay for college A to college B. You get waitlisted/rejected.

That helped me considering my low GPA. Get a good GPA. Oh, and write a GOOD FUCKING ESSAY. That helps IMMENSELY. I got a phone call from one of the professors at my school's philo dept commenting on my essay. Things you wish you knew before college: Frats = Fucking STUPID. Stay the fuck away from them. Learn to cook. Get a job ASAP so you can continue to buy food in case you can't cook like me. Don't expect to find very many smart people in school. Trust me. Even in top schools, you'll be surprised at the number of people who simply lack common sense and the like. It's shocking.

Edit 'you college kids' lol... wtf.
Also, you presented the post like, 'I want to know stuff; post it in this format'
I think you could have gone about the OP better.
Either way, I can try to offer a few things even though I'm not a 'college kid' unless you count graduate school.
One of the tricks for doing well in college is to do research into which professors are easier or better (when you have choices). This applies both for courses in your major, and core aka general education.
If you have flexibility when making a schedule, don't get too creative or do a schedule that seems 'really good' because it's going to screw you up... especially in the earlier years of college.
I realize my advice is only applicable once you are admitted, but plenty of people here can offer you better and more updated advice. I got into everywhere I applied so I lack some experience in the topic :p
|
Where are the non uc people also wtf do people only attend college in cali.
Anyways just one thing you should do: As soon as you hit accept into the college as a metual agreement. Send a copy of your current transcript don't wait for final they will take a progressive one it mean to check what you said you did you did in high school. A lot of college's have a point system of some sort adding shit that you didn't do my mistake like quarter graders to semester will hurt.
|
Things you wish you knew before college: that i needed to actually do shit and dedicate myself to some passion starting from freshman year if i wanted to go to any top tier colleges :\

College Currently Attending: UCLA
Major: Physiological Sciences
Year Graduated High School: 2007
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 4.23
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc):
SAT I - 2180
SAT II Math - 800 SAT II Biology - 730
AP English Language & Composition - 5 AP English Literature & Composition - 3 AP Physics C - 4/4 AP Economics - 5/5 AP U.S. Government - 5 AP Comparative Government - 5 AP Calculus BC - 4/5 AP U.S. History - 5 AP European History - 4 AP Biology - 5
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I had an internship at a lab that my dad got for me that I wrote about in my college essays that I feel like helped me out a lot. I was the "music man" at school...I did orchestra and choir (was a section leader in both) and also took billions of AP classes (as seen above).
Things you wish you knew before college: College is really, really different from high school. It sound stupid, but it was really strange for me. I always thought I would adjust really well to college, since I was always hanging around college-aged kids and never at home anyway. But when I got to UCLA, I found out the hard way how different things are. At home, you get to compartmentalize your life...that is, you have your home life, your school life, your church life, etc. When you're in college, all of that becomes a crazy blend, and it's really hard to differentiate and figure out where to prioritize your time. Maybe it was just me, but I wish someone had passed that knowledge onto me sooner.

I'm applying to college as well, but I'm pretty worried.
Colleges applying to: MIT, Harvard, CalTech, Carnegie Mellon, others
Major: Computer Science
Year Graduating HS: 2009
HS GPA: 4.07 weighted, 3.97 unweighted.
Stats
SAT 1 - 770 CR/780 Math/740 Writing SAT II - 760 Math 1, 730 Math II. Still need to retake both of those as well as Physics
AP Calculus - 4
My schedule isn't nearly as challenging as it should be for a college-bound student, but not due to poor selection on my part. I've taken the most challenging classes my school has. We only have two AP courses, and I finished AP Calc last year. They had to invent a math class just for me. It really sucks knowing that my school is crap in terms of academics, and that I'm being stifled by it.
Also, to give some perspective on how crappy my school is. The Chemistry subject test for the SAT is supposed to test the knowledge of a general CP chemistry course. My honors class did about half the material on the test.

important things i learned in college and tips for you guys:
- don't room with a friend from high school - find good quality people early on (not just people you get shitfaced with at parties) because a) you'll eventually need roommates b) they can introduce you to more good quality people and c) they'll be around for the rest of your life - high school friends are the shit, they'll always have your back forever and ever - pack a fan if you don't have ac - weed > alcohol, if you've tried the latter you should really the other one too. if you don't like it, fine but if you do it can really improve the quality of your life - this one's really pessimistic, don't take it to heart because i probably just had bad luck. but as a warning, don't assume you know someone even after a year or two until your relationship has been tested. there's a lot of scumbag motherfuckers out there! - premeds are faggots - balance not compromising your principles just to fit in and being overly judgmental. have some self-worth. - don't make a blog on tlnet about how your life is over because you got an A instead of an A+ in orgo 2, trust me even your best friend doesn't give a shit.
and a lot of you guys have sicko stats i had... 2.9 gpa and 1520/1600 sat, probably 800s on the sat2s except for 2c bunch of APs, oh yeah if you're in high school take them they save you from so much bullshit in intro classes
don't be a neurotic studyholic, have a blast and do stupid shit. how much you get out of college is directly proportional to how much you take advantage of your surroundings, gl to all you freshmen!!

wish i knew..... how to manage my time and prioritize things. keep your college gpa high so you can get into a good grad school. there are other factors included too, mostly research, but gpa plays a big factor too. but yea, don't get like a 2.5 the first year in college. in fact, dont get below a 3.5, because usually the first year everybody is in the position where they are still trying to figure out how to manage their time, aka its the best/easiest time to beat the curve.

College currently attending: utexas austin
major/minor : neurobiology and east asian studies
Year graduated high school: 2006
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 4.47/5, but maximum in texas is about a 4.7 because there are required courses you have to take that only count as a 4/5 for an A
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 2400 SAT, 800 Math II, 800 Lit II or w/e it was, 790 Bio II, 5s on APs for Bio, English 1 and 2 (lit and composition? don't remember their names), physics c, economics, gov't, calc bc, european history, japanese
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: nothing really. texas has a top 10% rule in that they accept anyone from the top 10% of their class from texas highschools, but i wasn't even top 10%, i was 13th%. however, for other colleges where i was accepted, the fact that i was a pretty serious cello player and did a lot of extracurricular chamber music stuff helped a lot, i would imagine. i think that your rank at your school is a hell of a lot more important than they let on. i was not even top 10% at my school because i went to a magnet school with a lot of competition...at the public high schools around austin i would have been top 1% with my GPA. this seems to really be the only reason i was rejected at a lot of colleges, because the schools didn't understand that being 13th% was different for my high school. i'm sure that my 2400 and other standardized test scores helped me with getting into UT, but for schools like Harvard, and all the other extremely competitive schools, it doesnt matter that much. 80% of the people applying will have those scores and Harvard likes to release newsletters saying that they reject more perfect SATs than they accept. so you usually need something to make you stand out more for those kinds of schools. i went to utexas because my family is middle class, and thus does not qualify for financial aid, even though going to a more expensive school would be like 80% of my family's salary. the other schools i got into were Haverford (small college, my adviser suggested it..), Dartmouth, Rice, Brandeis (wasn't on my list originally, got e-mailed a free application that i was randomly selected for), UPenn. Rejected at Harvard, Cornell, Princeton (this was my #1, kind of harsh to get rejected), Wash U. St. Louis, and John Hopkins.
Things you wish you knew before college: what college you go to really doesn't matter that much, especially for undergrad (assuming they are accredited and somewhat legitimate). what matters more is what YOU make of it, not whether or not it has a big name. the name comes in handy later, obviously, but if you work hard, do well, and keep active i think any college can give you what you're looking for. also, study hard, but not too hard, and enjoy yourself. i was a really good student in high school, and now i'm a terrible and lazy student in college.
sorry for no proper capitalization etc, it's late and i'm too lazy to do it right now

Hey guys, just wondered about one thing: Some of you are claiming to attend some College/University like Stanford etc. but still being unsure which major to chose. So you just can apply @ University and then chose every subject/major you want to? I'm asking because in Germany it's totally different, you can apply at top-notch Universitys very easily by chosing some less competitive subject. But something like medicine, law, etc. is way harder to get into. Here you need straight "A's" or sth. like that, and as an opposite there are subjects like history of arts you can get into with the worst grades ever possible.
|
In Holland to get into a good university all you have to do is graduate from high school. Here we have 3 levels of high school, you have to complete the highest one to get into university. Once you graduate you can pretty much do anything except for medicine because of the amount of people wanting to study it (Fuck yeah can't wait to feel some old dudes' prostate!). I guess my average grade is about 6 out of 10 or something. Wasn't really motivated to work hard for stuff like chemistry, french, german, cultural class or whatever you call it and that kind of shit. Only class I liked in high school was math.
Anyway I chose psychology at the university of Leiden.

College currently attending: Bowling Green State University major/minor: Music Performance Year graduated high school: 2008 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.4? Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): SAT - 680 Critical Reading / 750 Math / 510 Writing (shit haha) Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Haha... nothing, an idiot with a 1.5 GPA could get into my school. Although the Saxophone program here is AMAZING.
Things you wish you knew before college: I could write a book on this section. I wish I had taken WAY more AP Courses. And I mean, depending on which school you go to your school won't take any of your credits. But one of my friends in high school (who was the valedictorian) went to UNC Chapel Hill and had taken like... 10ish AP Tests, and he already had 40 credit hours, meaning he could graduate in three years (two if he really wanted to). It saves you so much time and you won't have to take some of the bullshit classes that your school might have in store for you.
I also wish I had not failed at being a student. I had manic depression my junior year, which was also my hardest year, and my work ethic was terrible and I ended up with two D's my first semester. It made my GPA drop from 3.7 to a 3.3. I mean, I did everything I could to bring it up, but you pretty much have ONE shot at high school. And colleges will only offer you money for what you do in that high school cumulatively, which is sort of sad because I worked hard my senior year (ended up with a 4.0) and did fairly well on the SAT bringing it up 300 points from the previous two times I took it.
I almost feel like being a music major was like a backup plan to me. I only got into it because I was good at it, and my dreams that I had as a kid to go to Harvard were shattered my Junior year, which is one of the reasons I transfered to the Music Conservatory my senior year. But now I realize that even though I failed my junior year in academics I could have still gotten back on my feet and I sort of regret that. I may not have gotten into Harvard for Undergrad, or even UNC Chapel Hill (My local college, pretty strong academic ranking), but I could have gone to a lesser school and owned it up there and transferred to UNC and then maybe gone to Harvard for graduate school. It's never too late. I didn't understand the value of hard work a little too late, and made a bit too many mistakes so that I'm on a different path than I originally intended. But I'm content with where I am, I'm one of the best undergraduate Saxophonists here and I am practicing very hard so that I can win some competitions in the near future.
So in short, I kind of wish I had realized that there are ways to get back onto your feet when you fail as a student. Hard work always pays off. Even if you don't get into the college of your choice this coming year, you can just look at the results and make it motivate you to work harder. And getting into the college of your choice is just a means to an end, you want to be something great, find your niche and bring it to the highest level you can.

And getting into the college of your choice is just a means to an end, you want to be something great, find your niche and bring it to the highest level you can.
lol I wouldn't be surprised if you were significantly better than me at playing
who's the saxophone teacher there? I take lessons from Paul Cohen, and he never remembers what he assigns me...

Getting into masters, I dunno why my prof even wanted me. Things you wish you knew before college: I wish I could go back in time and re-do school with the work ethic I have right now. I guess I can't say that I didn't know about work ethic/time management before going to university, but I simply wasn't able to do it properly. College currently attending: MIT
major/minor: dunno yet (maybe some combo of comp sci, applied math, economics)
Year graduated high school: 2008
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.7 unweighted (from a really nice private school)
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): SAT: 2230 (Reading: 740, Math: 800, Writing: 690), Math 2: 800, Chemistry: 800, Biology M: 730, Calc BC 5, Physics C (both parts) 5, Eng Lit. 4, US Hist. 4, Latin: Vergil 5, Comp Sci AB 5
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I seriously don't know because I applied in one of the hardest years of college admissions. A lot of it is luck. Maybe that fact that I spent a lot of time teaching science to elementary school kids instead of researching in labs helped. Or maybe it's the elite private school.
Things you wish you knew before college: Appreciate the 8-10 hours of sleep you get in high school because sleep is really the only limit in college. College is also fucking huge, so learn how to approach random strangers.

I hope you have safety schools.

I sleep way more in college. Part of that is because I lived 30 minutes away from my high school so I had to get up really early, and also because my parents didn't pick me up from school until 6pm everyday and I didn't like to do homework at school so I'd have to start it when I got home at 8pm or so after having to wait for my parents to finish work. PROTIP: Load up your classes on tuesdays, wednesdays, and thursdays so you can have a 4 day weekend every week, you can use that for a job or extracurricular or study time or whatever (I use it to avoid missing as much class for debate).
If you are worried about colleges more info usually just makes you feel worse.

Oh, I know what you meant now. Yeah, I've got a couple "safety schools" lined up. And in terms of my AP Calc score, I think it helps that I'm the only person in my school to ever "pass" it (3+). Actually, I think I might be the only person in my school so far to ever pass any AP test.

Duke
Major/minor
No clue
Year graduated high school:
2008
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted):
Our school didn't rank, but I took 13 AP classes throughout high school and the rest were either Honors or the highest level French offered. I also took Orchestra. Managed an A/B closer to A average without much effort, though I went to a public school.
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc):
SAT - took it once, November of Junior year and got 760/800/800 with 760 in math (rofl) SAT II Math "higher" level - 800 SAT II Chemistry - 770 SAT II U.S. Hist - 780. I took these three the May of my Junior year. AP Scores - All fives (all three histories, calc BC, etc.) except fours in Chemistry (wtf) and Macro. Also I didn't take the AP test for Computer Science because I sucked ass at that class.
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in:
Massive amounts of piano, placing in random concerto competitions (Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Carmel, etc.) and other various state/national competitions. I didn't bother listing the local competitions on my application.
Principal viola for the longest time until Senior year (utter bullshit, honestly) in the highest orchestra in the best high school orchestra in the state. The best part was that I didn't actually own a viola and had to borrow a school viola which I never took home.
Four years of Science Olympiad with random medals. President of the Chess Team. Two years of varsity Track/Field at one of the best schools in the country for sports (according to Sports Illustrated lists), though admittedly, our Track team isn't one of our bests.
Started a charity which gave free music lessons to underprivileged youth in inner city Indianapolis.
Things you wish you knew before college:
Didn't expect quite this much drinking. Going out on a Tuesday night? Holy crap :/...Thursday through Saturday night I can see, but random days like Monday/Sunday/Wednesday etc. are just crazy. Also, college is much more competitive than high school, and in large classes like econ or math lectures, you're competing on a curve with very smart people.
Random advice:
Don't just apply to a school because of its "name" or "reputation". One of my parents got super pissed at me because I didn't apply to Yale/Princeton/etc. but honestly I probably would've hated it there because it's such a cold/super competitive/I wouldn't fit in because holy crap, trust fund babies abound environment. Apply to schools which YOU personally have an interest in. I only applied to two state schools and Duke because I knew I wanted to go there.
Also, don't fall for college tours and stuff. They present such a glitzy, glamorized version of the campus/college that frankly, most of the time it just isn't very realistic. I'd advise you to talk to some friends at colleges you're looking at, and arrange a few nights with them to stay in their room. Don't tell admissions you're going. Obviously, when they go around to your school, find out basics like financial aid, acceptance, etc., but you really need a feel for student life. Oh, and be sure you stay over for at least a few classes and a weekend night.
Good luck on your college search!

College currently attending: Will be attending MJC/CSU Stanislaus next fall Major/Minor: likely visual arts. though i could easily see myself making a transition into english and writing. Year graduated high school: 2008 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): ~2.65 UW Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): ~1650. didn't have a calculator because me being me, I didn't check to see if i had fresh batteries in my calculator beforehand and I didn't bring any spares. also, did terrible on writing (480) because i'm the type that likes to let the information soak in for a bit and let it saturate before I start writing. really hurt me here. I'm a pretty good writer outside of the fact that I like to sit and think about it a bit much. :s
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: not much. could get into any of the two without having anything really special. ;__;
oh, right. and 4 AP Eng. Language, 2 AP Physics, 1 (siiiigh lol) AP Calculus, 3 AP US History.
Things you wish you knew before college: ah, I don't have too many regrets. spent pretty much all of my class time relaxing, drawing/painting even in calc and physics (pissed teachers off to no end), and being an overall BS student. had a 4.5 at one point until I was all 'hey, what the fuck's the point? I don't have the money or motivation to go to an upscale university, and i'm just not the type to do so!'
my advice is to just do what feels right. it's your life now, don't get your parents get all up in your grill about it. and have fun with it! but hey, that's just my approach. I know for some people, despite the intense mental fatigue and stress that comes with it, there's a certain bit of pleasure in going all-out in your studies. kinda like mental self-mutilation. or some shit.
whatever man, enjoy it.

oh, right. and 4 AP Eng.
Mental self-mutilation? Some people prefer to work hard because we want to achieve a higher goal than just enjoying life all the time by hanging out with friends and getting piss drunk all the time. I like you, believe in low stress, but at the same time I believe that I would never be satisfied with life if I just hung out with my friends all the time and never did anything productive. I'll work hard, but I'll never put it to the point that I hate what I'm doing. Mental Self-Mutilation for me would be not doing anything and getting shitty grades and not putting myself to a higher standard. Don't generalize about people you know nothing about just because they aren't like you.

College currently attending: UCLA Major: Philosophy Year graduated high school: 2006 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.9 (weighted, I think) Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 1890/2400, AP Calc 5, AP Gov't 4, AP English Language 3 Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Not really sure how I got into UCLA with such mediocre stats. I went to a really bad high school and they probably took that into acount when they looked at my information. For example, during my senior year, my HS almost lost its accreditation. Things you wish you knew before college: Trying harder in the community college classes I was taking during HS. For UC's at least, when you transfer your community college grades over, you only get credit for it (no grades) so it doesn't affect GPA. But if you're applying for grad or law school, the grades for those community college courses will be taken into account.

Hmmm, I'm Canadian, but I guess I'll give you my input.
College currently attending: Waterloo University, ON Major: Honours Nanotechnology Engineering Year graduated high school: 2007 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): This won't translate well, but I applied with a 94% average, and graduated with a 95% average. Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): I took one AP in high school (Calc: 5) because I liked Calc. My program ignores all APs when arranging courses so it didn't really matter anyway.
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Being a well-rounded person. I was heavily involved in school, academics, athletics, and even outside of school. More competitive programs most likely won't admit someone with just good grades, they want to see other things that show creativity, character, etc. (I probably wouldn't have got into my program without it, people have way better marks than me in my class.)
Things you wish you knew before college: I wish I were more intelligent and had a better study/work ethic. I was fairly lazy during my first year and I didn't get the ranking (they rank you in UW Engineering) I wanted. A good study habit is key. Also having sufficient cooking skills would help as well. Raw meat = dangerous o_!

wow, u guys work hard. this thread almost gives you an impression that tl.net is full of intelligent people. i'm pretty sure that many others are not posting theirs because it's crap compared to the regular college posters here. ours is probably worthless anyway. good job getting into ivy league schools guys. i envy you all.

College currently attending: UCLA Major: Physics, Math Year graduated high school: 2005 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.5 weighted (lol) Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 1350, something like 750 SAT II Math, 650 SAT II Writing, 700 SAT II Bio. AP Physics 4, AP US History 4, AP Bio 3, AP Art Hist 3, AP Euro History 3, I forget if I took anymore, doesn't really matter anyways
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I actually transfered from UCR. As you can see, I was a really shitty student in high school, I would do well in classes that I liked (Physics) and I would get C's in classes I didn't like (Spanish, damn that class). I think senior year in high school I had a change of heart (for various reasons) and I decided I should at least try to do well in every class, but really by then it was kinda too late to improve for college. I promised to myself that I'd do better in college and I transferred.
Things you wish you knew before college: none, what's the fun if already knew everything?

College currently attending: Purdue & Albion College major/minor: Industrial Engineering & Political Science/Philosophy Year graduated high school: 2004 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.6/4.0 Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 1430 SAT/31 ACT. Calc BC: 4, AP English: 4 (the essay topic was stupid as fuck. The test is meaningless besides the free credits) Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I visited all my schools and had good interviews. I also write incredible essays. Things you wish you knew before college: As you can see I transferred, essentially throwing away the first two years of college but I'm glad it did. The first thing I wish I had known was that the school's environment should be the most important factor for you as an undergrad. I don't think there would be a noticeable academic difference between attending UofM, Purdue, Berkley, Stanford, etc. Math is math and physics is physics and you're going to be taught the same things in all of those undergrad departments, so find the school that seems right for your social/living style (weather/hotgirls/SC scene/etc.) For me, Purdue was too fucking huge. I stupidly thought that I'd handle it because my highschool was big, but there's simply no comparison between highschool population (3,500) and college population (60,000.) I'm at a small school now with personal relationships with my professors and it's easy to get involved in activities. I've also matured quite a bit since I was 18, which brings me to my next point:
Don't assume college will be magically better than highschool. Nerds always tell themselves "things will be different!" but in reality, you'll still be stuck with a lot of idiots your first year or two. Even Harvard has legacy kids or people who just don't care about school. It really is what you make of it. You've got to work hard for things to be different, but you also need to make sure you're having fun and growing up outside of the classroom.

Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Heidelberg isn't a hard school to get into. My GPA and even my ACT did wonders for my tuition though.
Things you wish you knew before college: I wish I knew how much writing I would be doing. I wrote more during my first semester of college than I did all throughout high school.

The college list on this site is ridiculous. We probably have an inordinate amount of CompSci and otherwise really smart people here.

College currently attending: I'm done w/ school but my history... Washington State University - BA in computer science, Lower Columbia Community College - Pre-med transfer, University of Washington - Seattle - Biochemistry, University of Washington School of Medicine - MD w/ residency @ harborview
major/minor: BA in comp sci, Pre-med, biochemistry, md
Year graduated high school: 2002 (I started college in 2000 with 2 years of college complete in 2002)
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.1
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): I don't recall SAT.. if you complete a degree at another school SAT means nothing, but I earned a 38 on MCAT's which was on the old system out of 40.
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Hard work. UWSOM advisor told me that I needed a 37 to get a CHANCE at an interview so that's what I shot for. At the time UWSOM was rated #1 for med schools in united states. I'm not sure what is now.
Things you wish you knew before college: I wish I had studied medicine right out of HS. I wasted 4 years getting my BA in computer science at WSU before going back to community college for chem/physics/bio to begin pre-med. I actually enjoyed my studies at community college a lot despite the bad rap it has.
i also wish I had started at community college rather than university. The classes were more difficult at LCC than WSU which better prepared me for applying it, the classes are WAY smaller, and the tuition was dirt cheap which meant I could buy a lot more alcohol which is necessary for success.
If your goal is to party go to university.. if you're smart enough for ivy league then go for it ;p

GPA/Class Rank and getting applications in EARLY. Things you wish you knew before college: College isn't as easy as high school, I don't have two years to sleep in a counselors office there... Don't fuck up, the professors are pretty unforgiving. Also, NEVER contradict the professors beliefs in an easy.. 90% of ALL professors are Liberal.

UCSD, Electrical Eng
Graduated HS 2006, weighted GPA was like 4.0 in junior year and 4.3 senior year
Don't remember what all I got on tests, my SAT wasn't anything special but I had close to 800 on the Math SAT2. AP tests: Calc AB 5, Spanish 4, US Hist 3 (that class blew chunks and would be much better to take at college IMO, may be different at other HS though).
I'm no great writer and my app essays certainly didn't rock the readers' world but it was good enough, obviously. Don't know how important this really is. I didn't have much extracurricular stuff really, but I did tutor a junior high student for a bit while in HS which is probably a great way to improve your chances of acceptance. I did two years at community college, although I was accepted to UCSD EE straight out of HS as well.
Things I wish I knew before college? Talk to academic counselors alot, make sure you're covering all your requirements. Trying to figure out everything on your own will be a total failure. There's a certain art to working out your schedule, but don't get carried away trying to idealize your schedule. Do look at alot of different possibilities though, and realize that early in your college career you have tons and tons of choice as to what classes you take in a given semester/quarter, so you should be able to work out a decent schedule if you sit down for a couple hours with the schedule. In hindsight you'll find that you wish you had taken different classes, scheduled things differently, etc but there's nothing you can do to get it perfect.

College currently attending: Northwestern University Major/Minor Not a fucking clue yet Year graduated high school: 2008 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.9x unweighted Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 780/680/780 for a combined 2240. 5's on every AP Exam except for Physics B (Physics C, Chem, Calc BC, US History, World History, Stat, Macro, Microecons) Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Truthfully, not a fucking clue. It might have had something to do with the hundreds of hours I logged volunteering, but I think that's bullshit. Plus my essays were done like the day before the deadline. And it couldn't have been the grades, cause everyone here has ridiculous SAT scores and whatnot. Things you wish you knew before college: Don't fucking apply common apps the day or two before it's due. The site crashes so often. Talk to your counselors and advisors a LOT. Make sure you have the requirements for each college you're applying to. I couldn't get in any UC schools cause I didn't take a fine arts course during high school. Make sure you don't overload yourself in one area, try to mix and match your schedule with some reading courses, some numbers, and some other shit. Organic Chemistry here is a bitch. Try lots of clubs, but eventually weed them down to the ones you're really interested in. And finally, DONT panic and stress out because it just makes everything worse.

the reasoning behind it is that high-achieving students will never get to explore other non-academic courses such as photo, video production, journalism, fine arts, etc if AP/IB courses are weighted, since these courses will pull down their GPAs.
however, this sucks because it completely screws up class rank. in our graduating top 5% (who get a special medal, certificate, and note on their transcript), about 2/3 of them were IB diploma students. the other 1/3? students who got easy As with standard level english and history, 2 periods of PE, no math class, a dumbed down science course, and a study hall.
i was (barely) ranked in the top 10% in my graduating class, but if you had gotten rid of those garbage students with inflated GPAs, i most likely would have been in or very close to the top 5%.

I guess the point is colleges will recalculate your GPA and know that your class rank should have been higher than it was. They will certainly take grade inflation into account.

I got rejected from a lot of good schools. now I get to watch my friends who envied my talent and abilities all going to better schools than me. I'm planning to bust ass for a few semesters and then apply for a transfer. honestly i don't even know if I'm capable of that. I've never studied for an exam more than 16 hours before I had to take it. I've never been able to turn in my work for more than 1 or 2 classes in a day.

I guess the point is colleges will recalculate your GPA and know that your class rank should have been higher than it was. They will certainly take grade inflation into account. i realize that they recalculate your GPA based on their own scale, but they have no way of knowing the course load of the 30something students that were ranked ahead of me. for all they know, all of the other students were taking equally rigorous courses.
No, they wouldn't assume that. When they hear from your school that advanced courses are not weighted, they would simply ignore the class rank. Why would they pay attention to class rankings with severe grade inflation? They don't need to know what kind of courseload the kids above you took, because they don't care.

A friend of mine got a better internship offer because he partied a lot and established lots of connections with people. Wait whaaat Princeton didn't require SAT IIs back then? They require three now :/

So are you a doctor? maybe we could talk seeing as I want to go to the US and im gonna apply for the USMLE in June

College currently attending:university of regina major/minor philosophy/english Year graduated high school:never graduated. High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): never graduated. i scored 99% on the ged though. Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc):i never had to take an entrance exam or an sat, mostly because it's canada. Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: I had a pretty interesting essay i guess, since i was just a high school drop out trying to better myself intellectually, i think that might have helped me get into a decent university. Things you wish you knew before college:i thought going to university was a place to meet intelligent individuals that actually enjoyed learning. but most of them are really just in it "to get a good job", and don't actually care about learning. a pretty mediocre experience so far.

But where I am right now, oh god no. It's great fun here Paper and evan are both really chill. Phase and Yosh and Wasabi and some other people went/go here but I haven't gotten to meet them yet. You'll see me... In graduation '09. Maybe. :p Edit - the thing is I might transfer to Stanford this year or the next. I've been to counseling a few times this month and it's the likely outcome. WTF~! BETRAYER OF THE LIGHT lol Even my friends don't like it; almost nobody likes it when Cal people ever hear the word Stanford. I'm just kinda digging the smaller class sizes in Stanford among other [legitimate] reasons.
It's definitely a better school, but if you're going to transfer, transfer to Harvard or something.
It's just one of those things that's... not done.

College currently attending: *Planning on attending* University of Michigan major/minor: *Planning...* Computer Science Year graduated high school: 2009 High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): 3.7 unweighted, and I'm only in the top 20% of my class who are a bunch of hicks taking Algebra as seniors. Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): 29 ACT, 2 AP US (fucked around too much in that class), taking AP Calc, and AP Physics this year. Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: All-Conference football (have a chance to play at collegiate level), Class Vice President, Varsity Club Secretary, involved in all those clubs and that stuff, being on homecoming court and all that popularity contest bullshit. Things you wish you knew before college: I often travel to colleges on the weekend to party with friends, most of whom graduated last year, so I see that side of college life. But the studying schedule and being able to do what I want when I want will be different.

College currently attending: University of Ottawa
major/minor Economics/Math
Year graduated high school: 2007
High School GPA (unweighted or weighted): No GPA here, something like a 96.4
Stats (SAT/ SAT II/ AP scores/etc): IB full bilingual diploma with 41 points (took HL Chem, HL Physics, HL Math, HL A1 English, SL Geography, SL A2 French)
Things that you think helped give you the "edge" in getting in: Honestly, for OttawaU, the fact that I had an above 85 average. I got accepted at the University of Waterloo but I didn't really know what I wanted to do so I stayed here (not to mention that I got a higher scholarship here). But I did a few extracurriculars, got decent letters of reccomendation and was part of a couple of clubs. I wasn't involved in crazy extracurriculars like some of my friends.
Things you wish you knew before college: - Just because they got into university doesn't mean that people are smart. - Take the time to enjoy yourself, it isn't worth it to just study all of the time. That said, it feels a lot better to have high marks than to not have them. - First year is so much easier than second year. Enjoy it. - The quality of undergraduate degrees differs quite a bit between universities. A degree is NOT a degree. Trust me, if I had the choice, I'd have gone to Waterloo in my first year. It costs quite a bit more, but if you can afford it... Oh, and go with the university that has the right 'atmosphere' for you. A great education isn't worth having a miserable time. - Get involved on campus! Seriously, check out the clubs. Even if it's something that not many people are interested in or it's not that popular, join it if it it interests you. - Sign up for classes RIGHT AWAY if it's a large university. Seriously, you don't want to be the fool (see: me) who has morning classes and late night classes followed by morning classes the next day.
